Calibre - Ereaders

#1 Post by LeithR »

I'm running Slacko 5.3.3 on an HP Pavilion ZV6000 and its running very well.

I would like to download ebooks and understand that Calibre is ideal for that purpose. Is there a puppy version of it yet or what is the best approach to take to get it onto my machine please?

calibre changes so often trying to use .pet and/or .sfs files cn be painful.

I simply extract calibre to /mnt/home and run it from there

I use this link http://www.fosshub.com/Calibre.html

Select the version appropraite for your system and download it.

Click on the downloaded file, select extract and then answer yes to the prompt about all.

I use a bootable usb drive, so I extract it to /mnt/home/calibre-working

The reason I extract to /mnt/home is because I do not want to increase the size of my save file.

Once it's extracted, go to directory where you installed calibre and click on it.

Good Luck

Thom

Thanks Thom,
Have done that, I've downloaded, created as you suggest then gone to /mnt/home/calibre work and clicked on calibre without any response.

All messages seem to indicate that it was successful in extracting the files.

Any other thoughts?

I forget to mention that I am using a bootable usb drive, so /mnt/home is on that drive.
Maybe you need to extract calibre to somewhere other than the HDD? I have no
exoerience with Puppy on the hard drive.

do you get any messages then you type calibre from the command prompt?

Sorry I'm not that much help

I've created /mnt/home/calibre work on my HDD. I've gone into the directory and clicked on the icon called calibre. It has no effect, are there other actions I need to carry out please?

Calibre has not come up in any of the standard directories as an option,

Not sure what else you might need to know.

Sorry, as i said, I use a bootable usb, NOT the hdd for Puppy. Hopefully someone who uses a Hard Drive install can assist you.

Install calibre on frugal-installed puppy

#7 Post by vanchutr »

How to install calibre (in frugal-installation puppy)?

(1). I'd installed calibre in puppy_oveprecise_5.7.30
(2). puppy_oveprecise_5.7.30 was frugal installed in sda3 (this partition is formatted as ext2) (in directory /mnt/sda3/precise).
(3). Boot and create a pupsave (e.g named this as oveprecisesave-cd.2fs). This oveprecisesave-cd.2fs will be create in your root directory - in /mnt/sda3/precise)
(4). Reboot puppy_oveprecise_5.7.30 with oveprecisesave-cd.2fs. You will see: folder named /mnt/home. This is /mnt/sda3 with my installation of precise (as described)
(5). Enter /mnt/home and make directory /mnt/home/calibre. Then untar calibre-1.28.0-i686.tar.bz2 in /mnt/home/calibre.
(6). Enter /mnt/home/calibre and at console (rxvt) type this command: ./calibre. Enjoy calibre.

following worked on a full HD install of precise 571:

extracted folder to mnt/home (would probably work from anywhere)

pressed tilde key (~) to get the console window to show

typed [actually pasted with a middle click] ./calibre

pressed enter

HTH

edit:

program and instructions work in precise 5.5 as well. (this time extracted to a folder on the hard drive running a frugal install off an sd card)

Install Calibre

#10 Post by vanchutr »

To LeithR
Please read my informations about "calibre's insatallion in puppy".
(1) In frugal installation mode, you must boot Puppy ovprecise and "must create an pupsave".
(2) After you'd created an pupsave now please reboot your ovprecise with the created pupsave. This time you will see /mnt/home. If this directory isn't existed you won't see /mnt/home and can't install calibre.

*** On forum -> Search ovprecise-5.7.30.iso -> Download

method also works for quirky tahr and precise 5.6.1. for all four of the puppies i tested this out on, it wasn't necessary to invoke with the terminal--just click on the calibre file (looks like (is) a script file) that appears in the directory you've extracted to. (i recommend making a new folder for extraction to keep things tidy as it will strew its contents all about the extraction location without one). drag it to the desktop (and optionally right click > set icon > [drag a pic you like to the popup]).

there's also this older version packaged as a pet
