Welcome to L.A.S.S.I.E., Version 002 !

L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 is a Multi-Language Puppy-Linux Derivative and it is either based on Precise 5.7.1 (PAE Version) or based on Precise 5.7.1 retro (Non PAE Version). It is build by RSH by using the LazY Puppy ISO Builder and it was released at 2nd of April 2014.

L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 is useable out of the box for these Languages:

DA, DE, EN, ES, FI

Image Image Image Image Image

FR, NL, IT, PT, TR

Image Image ImageImage Image

L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 is booting directly into language EN. Quicksetup and Welcome1stBoot are disabled by default. You can easily execute them by the menu (lite modification, but you'll find it quickly in Menu Welcome).

After switching L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 to the your language settings and restarting X, a small GUI appears, that gives option to remaster (the SFS only) the OS, so it will boot after this straight into your language (the language you have switched to). If you don't want to remaster the SFS only, just close the window.

But, please, note:

- either switch the language and do the remaster immediately
- or switch the language and just checking out / testing the OS

Do NOT, repeating: do NOT switch the language, testing the OS and remastering after using the OS!

If you've done a remaster, the new SFS will be presented in a ROX filer window. Just copy it to the L.A.S.S.I.E. boot directory (overwrite the existing one, but don't wipe the ISO!)

Special Features (new in L.A.S.S.I.E. 002):

VarioMenu-Groups and Desktops
- Each Desktop/VM-Group now has its own wallpaper
- Desktops and VarioMenu-Groups can be switched by keyboard shortcuts
- - Strg 1 switches to Desktop 1, Alt 1 switches to VM-Group 1 (e.g.)

- Added Option to the Right-click Menu of the Drive Icons to Power Off the Computer
- - it will first unload all loaded SFS Modules
- - after this all mounted ISO, SFS and 2fs, 3fs, 4fs Files in /mnt will be unmounted
- - then the Drives do unmount
- - then the Shutdown-GUI appears on the Screen

- Changed behavior when clicking a PET file
- - a GUI appears when a PET is clicked the 1st time in a session
- - - it offers option to choose either to build a SFS Module automatically
- - - or to install the PET package as usual
- - - if 'build a SFS Modue' is chosen, it will be used as default during the session
- - - though, one can still install PET packages by right-clicking it

HowTo build a SFS from multiple .deb files downloaded by Package Manager

I'm choosing for this the aqualung_0.9~beta11-1ubuntu9_i386.deb and its dependent .deb files: libifp4_1.0.0.2-5_i386.deb, libjack-jackd2-0_1.9.8~dfsg.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb, liblrdf0_0.4.0-5build1_i386.deb, liblua5.1-0_5.1.4-12ubuntu1_i386.deb , libmodplug1_0.8.8.4-1_i386.deb, liboggz2_1.1.1-1_i386.deb, libraptor1_1.4.21-7ubuntu0.1_i386.deb, libwavpack1_4.60.1-2_i386.deb, because it is small in size and therefor fast to download (the SFS will be somewhat around 1.8 MB).

Execute the package manager and search for aqualung and click on the aqualung file inside of the package manager, after it has been found and is presented in the package manager gui.

Choose to examine the dependencies and to download them without to install the downloaded files.

So the complete list of downloaded files should look like some like that:

aqualung_0.9~beta11-1ubuntu9_i386.deb
libifp4_1.0.0.2-5_i386.deb
libjack-jackd2-0_1.9.8~dfsg.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb
liblrdf0_0.4.0-5build1_i386.deb
liblua5.1-0_5.1.4-12ubuntu1_i386.deb
libmodplug1_0.8.8.4-1_i386.deb
liboggz2_1.1.1-1_i386.deb
libraptor1_1.4.21-7ubuntu0.1_i386.deb
libwavpack1_4.60.1-2_i386.deb

These files should have been downloaded to /root.

Make a directory, called aqualung_0.9-beta11-1ubuntu9_i386 ( replace the wave char (~) between 0.9 and beta by a minus char (-) ).

Move all downloaded .deb files into the new created directory.

Move the directory away from /root, since the SFS is build in /root from directory aqualung_0.9-beta11-1ubuntu9_i386 (or however you have named it). Move it into a sub-directory of /root or -even better- into your HD's file system.

Do execute a right-click onto the directory aqualung_0.9-beta11-1ubuntu9_i386 (or however you have named it) at its new location and choose: Merge to SFS.

If the GUI to create a PET package appears on the screen, let it build the PET package (the SFS is build from this PET package after its creation).

A ROX filer window should open a few moments later, presenting the aqualung_0.9-beta11-1ubuntu9_i386.sfs in /root. Move it to the L.A.S.S.I.E. boot directory. Go to menu Multimedia and look for Aqualung. Click its entry and Aqualung should run after the SFS is loaded automatically.

Everything went fine?

If no menu entry is found, just refresh the menus and restart JWM!

HowTo build a PlugIn SFS for the use with GIMP ?

This is written for the use with GIMP Paint 2.8.7, but can be used for GIMP 2.8.x in general.

Either download the LP2_GimpPainter-2.8.7.sfs,
or download the GIMP files provided by don570 and build a SFS from those files.
You can use also these versions of GIMP: 2.8.4 or 2.8.10 and build a SFS from those files.

If you have chosen to build a SFS from don570's files, rename the SFS (add LP2_ in front of its name) and do execute a right-click onto the SFS --> choose: Convert to SFS P.L.U.S.

Whatever SFS you are using, move it to the L.A.S.S.I.E. boot directory.

Download the GIMP Beautify, Border & WaveTank PlugIns. These would be the files: Beautify-Linux_x32.zip and Rip-Border-Textures_0-5-1.zip and Texture-Border-Textures_0-5-1.zip and sf-will-wavetank_gimp-2.8.zip to be downloaded.

Create a directory named: Gimp-PlugIns-2.8 either in /root or any other ext file system. Create a directory root in that Gimp-PlugIns-2.8 directory. Create a directory .gimp-2.8 in that root directory. Create a directory plug-ins in that .gimp-2.8 directory.

So you will have a path: (/your-work-dir-here)/Gimp-PlugIns-2.8/root/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins

Clicking left on Beautify-Linux_x32.zip and let unpack all files.

You'll get those files:

beautify
border
simple-border
skin-whitening

Make sure they are all executable!

Copy those files into directory (/your-work-dir-here)/Gimp-PlugIns-2.8/root/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins.

Clicking left on Rip-Border-Textures_0-5-1.zip and Texture-Border-Textures_0-5-1.zip and let unpack all files.

You'll get those dirs:

rip-border
texture-border

Copy those dirs into directory (/your-work-dir-here)/Gimp-PlugIns-2.8/root/.gimp-2.8

Clicking left on sf-will-wavetank_gimp-2.8.zip and let unpack all files.

You'll get this file:

sf-will-wavetank_gimp-2.8.scm

Create a directory usr in directory Gimp-PlugIns-2.8. Create a directory share in that usr directory. Create a directory gimp in that share directory. Create a directory 2.0 in that gimp directory. Create a directory scripts in that 2.0 directory.

So you will have a path: (/your-work-dir-here)/Gimp-PlugIns-2.8/usr/share/gimp/2.0/scripts.

Copy sf-will-wavetank_gimp-2.8.scm into directory (/your-work-dir-here)/Gimp-PlugIns-2.8/usr/share/gimp/2.0/scripts.

Do execute a righ-click on directory Gimp-PlugIns-2.8 and choose to create a PET package. Move the created PET package and also directory Gimp-PlugIns-2.8 from /root (if they are there) to any other location (best to your HD file system).

Do execute a right-click on the created Gimp-PlugIns-2.8.pet and choose to Convert to SFS P.L.U.S. - a few moments later a LP2_Gimp-PlugIns-2.8.sfs will appear in /root. Move it to the L.A.S.S.I.E. boot directory.

HowTo add a dependent SFS Module to a SFS Module ?

Now locate your LP2_GimpPainter-2.8.7.sfs (or just the one you might have build at your own) and do execute a right-click onto it.

Choose Add Dependencies.

If the 1st text editor window has opened up, drag 'n' drop LP2_Gimp-PlugIns-2.8.sfs into the text editor's edit field and click OK or Apply.

Just close the 2nd text editor window, that will open up.

LP2_Gimp-PlugIns-2.8.sfs is now added as a dependent SFS Module to the your GIMP SFS Module.

Do again execute a right-click onto that GIMP SFS Module and choose: Create RunScript. Select the .desktop file and click OK or Apply. Refresh the menu and restart JWM (not X) to see its menu entry in Graphics menu. Clicking this entry will load the your GIMP SFS Module and also load the LP2_Gimp-PlugIns-2.8.sfs before executing the GIMP.

Ready...

Thanks for doing a mirror of L.A.S.S.I.E. 002!

But there is a faulty file listed in the mirrors (so far).

It is: LP2_Aqualung09b11.sfs

The Name listed here is: LP2_Aqualung_0.9-beta11-precise.sfs

The LP2_Aqualung09b11.sfs is the one from the Lucid based LazY Puppy. It will neither run nor work in L.A.S.S.I.E. or precise in general!

The LP2_Aqualung_0.9-beta11-precise.sfs currently is not available to download (only existing locally on my drives). I have chosen to not to upload this file, because I have written a short Guide, HowTo build a SFS Module from multiple .deb files, downloaded by the package manager., to let the user learn, how easy it is to build a SFS Module using L.A.S.S.I.E. and the SFS P.L.U.S. tools.

Thanks for removing this faulty file from the mirrors.

OK.

Meanwhile I have extended a little my private version of L.A.S.S.I.E.

It is now extremely usable for working on pictures and photographs.

Also it is a nice Audio and Video Studio.

All was build by using either SFS Modules from LazY Puppy Repository or by building new SFS Modules from .deb files downloaded by Package Manager.

Images attached showing a few examples. Ardour was made from scabz's files.

Other files are build like it is described here.

Thanks.

Ok,

I have tried to build a L.A.S.S.I.E. based on the new Slacko 5.7 no PAE ISO.

Everything seemed to work fine. The Menu Categories and Entries are showing up nicely in the OS related to the Language setup. Also the Right-click items of ROX and of the drive icons.

But now, I've discovered all programs are just partly translated by gettext. There seems to be big differences of used GUI text between precise and slacko.

Since the German language package is the one which has been setup best of all langpacks I've tested so far, I'm convinced that the results in other languages different to DE will be much less usable.

So I have to wait for all langpacks to be setup for the use in Slacko.

Though I doubt this will ever happen...

...which would be very pity since the new slacko really has some stuff, that I would add to a "PLUS"-List.

So it's up now to the langpack builders...

Thanks, oui. Visited and posted.

Ok.

A German user has found creation of a save file at shutdown is not working in L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 non PAE Version - which was a bit surprising to me. While doing some testings on this, I found creation of a save file at shutdown is also not working in L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 PAE Version!

So this forces me to build L.A.S.S.I.E. 003, which will take some time. It depends on how fast I can solve this problem (was successfully tested in 001, so I can't imagine where to start at the moment). Even though I would solve this tomorrow, a new upload can't be done earlier than end of May or beginning of June 2014.

Meanwhile one can use the built in Save File Builder (Menu Utilities) to create an empty save file, which can be loaded at next boot. Mount your boot partition first and make sure, its free space is higher than the requested save file size.

When using L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 with a save file in use, I recommend to shutdown/reboot the Computer by a right-click onto a drive icon, which will first unload all loaded SFS Modules. Otherwise it could be necessary to unload previous loaded SFS Modules manually at next boot, before they can be used again. In such case there may arrive a message about a SFS Module not found - even though it is locally existing.

Each SFS Module comes with dependencies (libs) included, so all Programs should work also in each Precise Puppy and its derivatives.

Note:

!!! If you want to expand this Version of SARA-ScriptBox and want to add new Applications (SFS Modules) you need to use L.A.S.S.I.E. for this. !!!

SARA-ScriptBox for L.A.S.S.I.E. Version 0.0.2. is preconfigured to download the SFS Modules automatically at first try to run the Application. The SFS Modules will download to /root/Downloads (make sure there is a Directory /root/Downloads existing) and will load the SFS Modules to execute the Applications from Directory 'Modules' at boot partition (make sure there is a Directory 'Modules' at your boot partition existing). After downloading a SFS Module there will be a Message that wants you to move the downloaded SFS Module to Directory 'Modules' at your boot partition - so just do it.

Unpack SARA-ScriptBox-for-LASSIE.tar.gz and copy its content (RoxApp Directory 'SARA-ScriptBox-LASSIE') to a EXT partition (NTFS will not work for RoxApps and VFAT will not keep the symlinks) before trying to use it.

Inside of RoxApp Directory 'SARA-ScriptBox-LASSIE' (open it by right-click option) there is a Script, SARA-Apps-Config-Patcher, which can be used, to patch all the .cfg Files of the SARA-RSD Applications to easily set a new Directory for the use of the SFS Modules. Let option to download the SFS Modules automatically activated. This will be deactivated for each SFS Module separately after the SFS Module is downloaded.

Hope you can enjoy this...

#56 Post by RSH »

Hi.

I have uploaded L.A.S.S.I.E. 002 PAE Version packaged as Puppy-Windows-Installer, so it can easily be installed (and un-installed) in Windows.

Download LASSIE-002-PAE.exe

L.A.S.S.I.E. - Version 0.0.2

Thank you for all your work, I very much like your multi desktop setup
I am new to linux yet feel it worth my while to slowly learn the basics so as to be able to use it frequently and move away from that mans OS that keeps letting viruses into my system

Regarding your above post about a problem with the save file

I downloaded your Version 0.0.2 ISO a few days ago and ran it for the first time last night, it booted fast - A good job done by you considering what is included

Being aware of the save file problem I went ahead with setting everything up in the same way as I had set-up Precise Puppy a month ago (create a save file on my HDD to my specified size and then create another save file for the program files) The save file to a requested 4Gb was created (LassiePrecisesave_cryptx-myname.2fs) the programs save file was not created.

Can you help me solve a problem until your release of Version 0.0.3 ISO
The problem I have is that I am stuck at create a save file from the menu using the included save fail creator tool, the reason I am stuck is that I already have a 4Gb (LassiePrecisesave_cryptx-myname.2fs) file that I chose to have encrypted and that works as it should. I did use the save file tool in the menu to look and learn what it does and ended up with LassiePrecisesave-myname2.2fs alongside my other save file, as I have some knowledge of Puppy (not much but learning) I now understand what I had done as on the next boot I was given the option to boot from the encrypted save file that lassie built or the empty save file that I created using the tool.
I hope I have explained my dilemma in a fashion that you are able to understand. What I need to know is how do I create a save file for the programs included in your ISO to be saved to my HDD and shorten the loading time for lassie, I am guessing that I will first need to rename the save file I created with the tool so that Lassie will recognise it as the file to write the programs to when booting from the ISO for the first time, if my guess is correct - what do I rename the save file as, if my guess is incorrect - I am at a total loss as to what is required to solve my problem
Thank you in advance, I look forward to your insructions and appreciate all your time and work that you have put in to create a linux puppy that is free for anyone to use
My apologies, I have just read through this post - I had no intention of writing a book

Ok.

I'm not sure if I do understand completely.

If you'll stay online, I will be back in a few minutes, so we can try to come trough it.

Just choose the save file you want to use and boot the system.
What I need to know is how do I create a save file for the programs included in your ISO to be saved to my HDD
What programs are you referring to?

Inside of the ISO just these files:

boot.cat
boot.msg
help2.msg
help.msg
initrd.gz
isolinux.bin
isolinux.cfg
LassiePrecise_002.sfs
logo.16
LP2_ImageMagick-6.6.9-5.sfs
Modules-running-in-LASSIE-Precise.txt
README.HTM
vmlinuz

If you want to copy these files to your HDD, just left-click the ISO and copy its content to your HDD or into a directory at your HDD - just use drag'n'drop between two Rox File Manager Windows.
and shorten the loading time for lassie
This is meant for booting faster from HDD instead of booting from CD?

If you want to install L.A.S.S.I.E. to your HDD tell me some of the specs:
- what drive
- other Operating Systems installed
- a.s.o.

Save Files

#60 Post by SOS »

Thank you for your time and quick reply yesterday

The information you posted solved all my problems, the file I needed was LassiePrecise_002.SFS, due to my lack of knowledge I wasnt aware that the SFS file was so easily got at from inside your ISO

I am ok booting from Cd but will probably carry out a full HDD install some time in the future

Thank you once again and sorry to have bothered you
