Installing Pupp 2.0 Question

#1 Post by jdawgnc82 »

Hi everybody!,
I am somewhat new to the whole linux world. I've been playing around with Puppy for a short period now. I have come into possession of an older PII pc that I have been trying to install puppy on.

Here's my problem:

-I booted the PC and ran DBAN to wipe the hdd.
-I then loaded puppy 2.0 up from the Live cd.
-Once inside Puppy, I used the Puppy Universal Installer.
-When I chose to install to the 'Internal IDE HDD'; I got a dialog box informing me that I can only install puppy in a 'Superfloppy Mode'. I chose to continue the install.
-It goes through setup and then prompts me about installing GRUB.
-I chose to install GRUB rather than make a USB boot disc.
-I followed the install wizard up to the point where it asks which partition the boot info is on.
-No matter what I enter, it tells me that there is no Linux partition.

I'm kind of stuck, does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!

Did you format or partition the harddrive after wipeing it? Puppy needs an actual partition to install into. This can be done through Puppy itself using cfdisk and mkfs.ext3.

If you have more than 128MB of ram it might be better to do a "frugal" install than a full install (still needs it to have a partition, but it can use FAT also). A full install is actually inferior because the system won't run in ram anymore. It is also less tested.

The name "frugal" doesn't mean it leaves anything out, it just refers to Puppy's not taking over an entire partition like it does in a full install.

Also, the frugal install is smaller because the built-in apps are greatly compressed (the 70 MB iso file is around 200 MB when decompressed). The main reason for using a "full" install is if you don't have enough ram to run Puppy normally.

Thanks for your help. I'll give it a try. I'm going to use Puppy in our office. I work out of a small satelite office for a printer repair service. Our current pc is running Windows 98 and it is always going crazy! We're going to try puppy and see how long we can go 'windows-free'! :)

As long as you don't want to use the Puppy computer for testing the printers...

Printer manufacturers are quite slow providing drivers (or opening specs) for their printers. There are many printers well supported but there are so many printers out there that it's a hit and miss.

Other than that I haven't found anything that cannot easily be done with puppy.

:D

Get your head around this
Puppy is upgraded every 6-8 weeks
Run it from CD - save data on HD

Puppy saves config on Hard disk
Puppy is designed to run from CD
I do it - many other experienced users do, including Barry.

Even Knoppix runs a lot faster as a HD install
Puppy runs from memory - once booted

HD and CD booted Puppys run at the same speed
Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)

It could actually be pretty good for us to have around someone who is serious about printers, maybe he'll be able to help improve printing...

serious about printers
I suppose it depends on HOW serious the task:
To my biased way of thinking - (We already have) - our handy friend Google -
Then this community & dedicated others fill in gaps.

Is it only me who feels  Anything ever thought about is likely on Web somewhere >
It's not the data missing - but will to research.
I hope it is not rude -& in no way  critical of anyone but - If one of below is not up to task -
No amount of PUPPY Power will be more inclusive - just the handy "Wizardy" which then only hides what happens.

If/when those fail - even developers must somtimes crack open the Docs.

(Need hand to then NET it - Here we are !)

I guess it's Gn2 (no kidding), as I have seen him give instructions here in forum about many printing options in Puppy.

I wonder if anyone would be interested to get the new guten print (formerly gimp print) into Puppy.
