came in Today. Still learning this ChromeOS way of doing things like 2 finger tap copy/select all/paste . Screenshot using hot keys. Terminal via Cntrl+t.

It's a wonderment OS. Boots in seconds. Chromium opens instant. Only dual core celeron. I am not trying to sell one or bump the seller but if interested
because I got it on the cheap.

Inserted a 32 gig SD card to boost the 16 gig SSD internal drive.

Like I said. Still learning this operating system that was stupid simple to set up on initial power up if you have a gmail account.
Wifi was stupid simple also.

Now to make a reinstall image on a 2 gig usb drive so when I break this trying to install something else. I'll have my backup. 8)
Don't know anything about these, but I see that Newegg is putting out at $125 soon...

The thing that sucks about chromebooks is that, you can't replace with the OS with something worth using.

For Ubuntu or Debian, probably yes....

No idea if this method could be used with Puppy though.....

I installed Mint 17 rc Cinnamon to a Gateway desktop pc.
It's working well so far.
Edit:
I installed Mint 17 Mate rc to an emachines laptop.
Needed to use an ethernet connection to do the installation and was
able to add the broadcom driver later with the driver managment
utility.
I added Qupzilla 1.6.6 using the instructions on the Qupzilla site for
Ubuntu, I also installed XBMC 13.1 from the XBMC site using the Ubuntu
instructions.
So Mint 17 rc is working well on a very fast desktop and a not very
fast laptop.
EDIT2:
And a Macmini too.

Alternative OSs for Chromebooks

#1566 Post by jakfish »

You can run all kinds of Linux on Chromebooks Currently using Bodhi on an Acer C720; it's pretty much perfect.

Stay away from the ARM processors and your Chromebook will be a fully-functional laptop for under $200 USD.

Jake

Re: puppy. Chromebooks can boot from usb, but puppy so far lacks the modified kernel for a Chromebook to launch Linux.

Ha! As I sit here at the local McD's, the Mint 17 Mate RC .iso having just finished downloading.

Looking forward to trying it out. I've had Mint 15 Mate running on this old HP Pav dv5000 laptop for about a year, and really, really like it - aside from a number of niggling, annoying bugs. Without those bugs, I'd consider Mint right at the very top of the heap as a typical home-user-type desktop environment. I am hopeful that this new LTS release has addressed some of these niggles (and the release announcement hints that they have). And Mint's shift to an LTS release cycle with/for 17 seems to bode well for eliminating any bugs that may crop up down the road. Fingers crossed!

Edit: @RTG, mine was the 4gig ram model for $119 and the battery acts new so I can't complain.

I've noticed on Distrowatch recently that more and more distros now seem to be released as 64-bit only. Should this trend continue (and my guess is that it will), Puppy could soon be one of the very few options left for those of us with older computers.
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.

I think most distros are still releasing 32 bit versions......... Distrowatch now shows the 64 bit downloads by default though. Usually one can go to the individual distro download page and find both 32 and 64 bit versions.
Worked out that way for me so far........ :)

This old box now has Windows 8 Pro,Windows 7 Ultimate,LXLE, MX-14, Point Linux, PCLOS Gnome 2 and Sparkylinux as well as Slacko,FatDog,Lighthouse and other Puppy frugal installs.
I have to scroll through the Grub menu........
Update..... Windows 8 had to go.No rant but I can't stand using it........ more room for Linux. :)
Thank goodness for Dban.

EDIT:
Reclaimed Windows 8 hdd space with 4 ext4 partitions.
Removed Windows 7 too ......... Linux only now. :D

What I have now is embarrassng. Ms Win 8.1 on
a Packard Bell low priced Laptop but that means it fail to
accept me booting Lindus due my lack of skill to follow instruckions.

I did hold both ARM version and the Intel chip version and
thought of buying one of them but did not knew at that time
a year ago? How difficult it would become to install
anything else that the already default Win 8.

Haha all that money down the drain. But I can afford it
but is it really worth it buying a Chrome?

It is after all a "cloud based computer? Supposed to be used that way.
Not that one are obliged.

One of the machine has a 320 HD on it so plenty of space
for my Puppy to be frugally installed.

What else than Puppy would be nice to have on it. Debian
so I can follow the dev of Debian Puppy versions. Love what you guys do.

Thanks for replying James; I'm happy to stand corrected if that's the case. I only check the download pages of the distros I'm actually wanting to download.

A few days spent with Xubuntu 14.04 LTS on my 8 yr. old HP Pavilion Core Duo 1.6 Ghz, 1 Gb laptop - very, very nice... but not perfect. Although quite smooth & fast under-mouse, it boots to a little higher CPU and RAM than expected (5-7% @ 200Mb) and the default package manager - Software Center - is non-functional (listed as an open bug @ Launchpad). Apt-got Synaptic, tho - so no biggie. Typical of Ubuntu re-spins over the last year or so, my favorite Gtk2 themes no longer display properly on many (more) apps (notice the Raleigh-look Galculator in the screenshot).

Otherwise very solid, smooth and stable, huge repo, love the Xfce desktop!

In all honesty, though, I find Carolina 1.2 superior in almost every way... lighter (3% @ 96Mb), faster, more and easier tweakability, great app selection, etc... and all of those other Puppy xtras.
