Puppy recognises my laptop (Compaq Presario 16980) Touchpad but not my serial mouse.

I'm nervous about reconfiguring the mouse: when I tried it in Mepis the whole thing froze: no touchpad, no mouse.
Has anyone got both pad and mouse to work? How?.
