Upgrade Puppy on-the-go

#1 Post by suttiwit »

Hello! :)
For example, when a new version of puppy comes, i can just download it and (perhaps) merge it to my existing without burning CDs and rebooting the computer.

:?: How can I give my existing puppy an upgrade to a newer version when there is? (especially for Fatdog64, i'm using him)

 After backup of course, I can't lose all my codes :p

There is no way to sanely upgrade any version of Puppy -the concept is unknown here.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to know if there is a way to move from one Puppy version to another without losing all the personalizations you have amassed in a current PUP?

The problem is not in your question, but is rooted in a view that personalization is always in the same place and is the same as you would move from one PUP to another.

The reality is that each distro developer, as they go about planning for their release, is at liberty to make minor/major/sweeping changes in what and where things reside. This, in turn, means that there is no consistent/standard from release to release or from version to version that would be the same for any individual personalization you would have done on ANY single PUP you were using.

Further, no one builds a consistent or standard tool to "migrate" your old personalization into a new system.

There are some developers "who do" offer some selected pathways in doing so, but, this is NOT an across the board element presented; nor is it consistent in how this is done from one offering to another developer's offering.

Thus, without any agreed to consistency, the "migration element" you speak to is not possible across the Puppy Linux spectra.

Hope this enlightens just a little into the problem when trying to do such.

Puppy does cope with minor version upgrades. Just point it at the new ISO with your old save file and it will upgrade.

Back up first though.
