USB Puppy works in one notebook not in another one

#1 Post by derekzoli »

Hi guys, I am new in puppy. I tried to find a solution but I am pretty young.
I made a USB Puppy. On one notebook everything is working fine.
On another one it boots normally but when destop come out I cannot use mouse, but also I cannot use keyboard.
Actually system looks working since if I plug anohter USB drice I can see Icon come out, same if I plug power. But I cannot control anything.
I tried to start only command line and was working. When I started graphic enviroment it was locked again. Any suggestion?
Thanks for help

Which version of Puppy? How did you install it in the flash drive? Are both notebooks the same? What kind are they? How much RAM do they have? Did you save anything when you shut USB Puppy down the first time?

derekzoli - please answer this question if you can ^^ , because if you DID create a savefile for computer #1, it is possible that those saved settings are interfering with the proper operation of computer #2... in which case you'll have to create a second (differently named) savefile, specifically for computer #2.

Sounds like the exact problem I had. The problem was the drivers for the keyboard and touchpad/mouse were not included in version of Puppy I was using. I ended up compiling a new kernel with the drivers included. I made an ISO here if you feel adventurous. If anything it could establish if it's a driver issue. If it works on that laptop there are a few other Puplets I could recommend if you don't like that particular Puplet.

Try this:

Boot with the USB drive.
At Puppy boot screen hit F2.
Use boot option puppy pfix=ram

If this works it is your save file stored settings causing the problem.

When you shutdown from running this way.
You will be asked to make a save file.
Give it a name that identifies it to the computer.
Now you have two save files.
Now you will get option at boot for which save file to use.
Use the one for that specific computer.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I tried one boot option puppy pfix=ram.
Same problem. No keyboard or touch pad working.
I did not save anything.
I reflashed USB.. on other laptop it works.
I will try battleshoter iso.
thanks so far.

If you were able to enter puppy pfix=ram, then the computer can understand the keyboard at that point in the boot process. Or do you mean that Puppy booted straight through and wouldn't respond to the keyboard when you tried to enter puppy pfix=ram?

One idea that might resolve your problem is given in the following instructions:
  1. Ensure that the ISO md5sum matches what was published on the download site.
  2. On the PC that the USB continues to boot on, burn the slacko-5.7.0-PAE ISO to a CD/DVD.
  3. Boot that CD/DVD on the PC where keyboard does NOT work
  4. Report success/failure on this thread
