How did you get interested in Linux/ Puppy?

#1 Post by delmar »

I work at a non profit day program with adults with mental retardation. One of my responsibilities is to run a computer lab. Using games and such to teach our people the basics of using a mouse, roller ball or touch screen, the best they can, so we can identify what sort of assistive technologies each individual might be able to benefit from. Most of the computers we have been given have tended to be the ones that have outlived their usefulness. Until, a few months ago our IT guy bought in a Chrome box and set it up for us. He described it as Google Chrome installed on a Linux machine.

The chrome box was blazing fast compared to our other (mostly XP) machines and running Chrome apps instead of programs works really well for the kind of games our folk like to play. This got me wondering, why not put Linux on our old machines and install Chrome. Our IT guy thought the idea showed a lot of promise and started working with me on identifying which distros would work well with the computers we have. We now how puppy Slacko installed on 4 of our six computers and have improved the functionality of those machines dramatically!

Meantime, back at my home, the hard drive my wife's computer crashed. I got it got her back on the Internet by putting Precise Retro on a USB thumb drive! Then I dug the last computer she had abandoned, because she was having some sort of problems with Windows, out of the corner and got it going with a Puppy CD! I was able to find and recover all the photos of our Grandchild that she had neglected to back up. I now have some form of Puppy on all 4 of the computers in my home!

That is my story so far.
My name is Delmar, and I am an enthusiastic novice Puppy user!

Motorcycles>Computer>Ebay>Hard Drive lockup>Puppy Linux.

In that order. The rest is history.

I only became interested in computers because of ebay and motorcycle parts. Other wise. I had no use for a computer.

Answer to the Topic's Title:

- Software Company Steinberg

Story behind that:

In Summer 2008 my Girlfriend bought a Phonic Firewire Helix 24 Board, a 16/24 Channel Audio Mixer for Audio Recordings. This one came including a version of Cubase, a multi-track Audio and MIDI Sequenzer Application.

After paying for it and moving the Mixer from the local dealer's store into our drumming room, we've got to find out, that the included Cubase version was different to the version mentioned inside the manual and outside of the mixer's shipping-case (sorry, don't know the right term).

Further more it needs to have internet access on the Computer where it should be installed and used to be able to register and unlock the Cubase for use.

I did not have any internet access at these times and I did not (and still do not) intend to connect my Music-PC to the internet, so I got in contact with the Steinberg Company, to ask for a solution.

The recommend me:

"Turn it back to your local dealer and get your money back."

Even though my local Musical Instruments Dealer bought a USB-Dongle for the use of this Cubase version and gave this dongle to me and my Girlfriend for FREE, I did decide NOT to use this Cubase version.

I've had sent a mail to Steinberg and did put some words on them because of their spam-tastic customers-support and went over to use Muppy, my first Linux System ever.

We still have this Cubase version and the USB Dongle, but still do NOT use it.

Thank you very much, Steinberg!

Lack of funds steered me to Linux. I couldn't afford modern equipment, and win31 was getting dated. In 1999, I tried Mandrake 6.1 & found it to be a windo-like experience, which ran on my old pc, without needing expensive software or antivirus. Eventually came Vector, Minislack & in 2005, Puppy changed my pc world. Despite trying some other distros, it was Puppy all the way - small, fast, live, installable, remasterable. May it ever be!

After completing a PhD found myself suddenly deinstitutionalised (from academia - not a lunatic asylum. Oh, hang about  ...). Self-funded and quite unable to sustain essential MicroSoft-driven software and hardware 'upgrades' - you know what I'm saying - became inspired by the FOSS movement from within the Windows environment. This lead naturally to the realization that I did not actually *need* Windows - all the software I used were native Linux. Threw Windows out, saving a small fortune and a large part of my sanity on a continual basis with Puppy :) Pure price-point perfection! Good for the soul too, knowing that I am not a significant contributor to eWaste.

5 months back, I had just bought my first computer.

The guy who assembled it gave me pirated win7 in it and told me to not to turn on auto updates.
(In India most of the home comps have pitated versions of windows on it.)

That got me searching for windows replacement.

Many searches got me Ubuntu and Mint etc...

But I thought my use is simple so the OS should be small too....

I found puppy.

I had 6Gb ram so went for Fatdog64.

I am quite happy with it.

Thanks.

 Business as usual!

It's not only India and -of course- it's not only pirated versions of Windows.

In 2006 I bought a 8-Channel Audio Card for Audio Recordings, which came without any drivers included (the guy who did sell it to me has had gotten it from eBay). Since I did not have had any Internet-Access at this times, I asked him for downloading the needed driver from the Internet and burning it onto a CD for my use of it.

The CD returned to me as a DVD including the following (incomplete list):

- driver for the e.BAND Audio Card

plus cracked versions of:

- Ableton Live
- Acid Pro
- Steinberg Cubase VST24
- Steinberg WaveLab

plus some more Audio Software which I can not remind at the moment and also plus thousands of VST and other PlugIns.

I assume he would have burned also the necessary Hardware to this DVD - if it would have been possible to do that.

Another assumption:

If anyone who is owning illegal Software or anyone who knows someone that is owning illegal Software, would go to the Police and to name those Persons, our Justice-Systems will collapse. It/they could NOT handle it, because of its massive impact to the Justice-System.

They even could not handle it if they would use some sort of mass-default-punishment by finances.

Human beings are corrupt by nature and we need to change this.

We means each and everyone for him-/herself!

And, at the police station, they will write the complaint in... a pirated version of Word, over...a pirated version of Windows...

I bet something similar in the Justice System.

Windows->Ubuntu->puppy

I began to hate windows because my machine did things I did not want and I did not tell to it to do. Same story with ubuntu. I came to puppy: statically built. It is obedient: it does only what I tell to it to do.

I was running Win2000Pro on an old [2003] desktop PC I'd been given by ErnieK of the PCGuide forums.
Caught and eliminated a trojan.

Decided to look for an OS that would be secure to use for online banking.
Tried various Linux distros.
Had difficulty getting them to do anything. [The command line sudo business was confusing]

Then ErnieK suggested trying Puppy Linux.
Liked it immediately.
Particularly the way it explained everything, and gave advice on how to complete the various steps in doing stuff.
Easy to do stuff, and it "just worked". :D

From then on, it has been an adventure...
So easy to use, SIMPLE and FAST.

Exactly!!!

In my life as a Musician I personally have met German Policemen that are using illegal Music Software and smoking Pot!!!

I got seriously interested in Linux when Windows Genuine Advantage suddenly decided that my 100% legal retail copy of XP (purchased and installed by me) wasn't genuine.Microsoft would gladly sell me another copy...... no thanks.

Wiped the hard drive and did a full install of Puppy. :)

I remember something similar happening to a lot of Windows users in Germany that have had bought a new Computer with Windows pre-installed plus a so-called OEM-CD (DVD) but can't remember how exactly this was solved. Though I've never heard of anyone needed to buy a new copy/license.

Let's see if I can remember it all...

Dos>win3.1>w95>w98se>w2kpro>Mandrake>Mepis>distrohopping>Slackware>Puppy 3.01>Puppy 4.0>Puppy 4.21>Puppy 4.31>(more and more Puppies)> now WXP & Puppies & Macpup & Vector

...when I first tried Puppy 3.01, I was sold! I still love that particular Puppy.
