PostPosted: Fri 08 Aug 2014, 13:12    Post subject:  I can't record from the microphone? mhWaveEdit, Precord, ...

I cannot record from the microphone of my laptop. I've tried mhWaveEdit, Precord, http://vocaroo.com/ (uses Adobe Flash), ... I've tried different Capture configurations in AlsaMIxer (-Internal- Mic Boost off or on, with different levels ...) ... but with no success.

In this computer, with other distros I can easily record from the mic with both local programs or http://vocaroo.com/

Any ideas to help me, please?

Anyone know of a utility or service via PUP's Menu to check if system has a mic and if the mic port has volume up (similar to vumeter in Windows)? Every laptop does NOT have a built-in Microphone so was curious to whether something can spot whether any PC has a built in Microphone or an active microphone plugged in to the sound card's Mic port?

Curious

quite some time ago now, someone posted a modified program to tune a guitar or other stringed instrument. This used a microphone input and gave a visual (on-screen) representation of the note's pitch and strength. It might be of use as an audio/visual aid. I can't recall the program's name. It's there, somewhere Question .

Could you post a pic of the alsa window showing all of the controls (record and play)?

Also - what puppy are you testing with?

Thanks!

Just running retrovol has solved the issue.

With that a new option has been added to "AlsaMixer - Capture", named Digital. Just with that the sound of the micro gets successfully recorded by any of the 3 above stated ways.

With the 2 local programs or apps the best levels of capture here are around:
Mic Boost: any value, no influence (only offers 0, 32 and 100)
Capture: 51 (offers several options from 0 to 100)
Digital: any value, no influence (offers many options from 0 to 100)
Internal Mic Boost: 32 (only offers 0, 32 and 100)

With the online service Vocaroo the best levels of capture here are around:
Mic Boost: any value, no influence (only offers 0, 32 and 100)
Capture: 20 (offers several options from 0 to 100)
Digital: any value, no influence (offers many options from 0 to 100)
Internal Mic Boost: 32 (only offers 0, 32 and 100)

N.B.: a) retrovol can also be opened from "Precord - tools icon - hand icon (bottom, right)", and from "mhWaveEdit - Play - Record - Launch Mixer". b) No need of Audacity! (almost the same size as the whole Puppy!!).

Important: In retrovol the Capture and Digital checkboxes have to be ticked (putting a check mark in any of both activates the other also) so the sound can be recorded from the mic.

The other day I did use retrovol, probably for this issue, but I imagine that the boxes would be empty. Today, after just running retrovol, I think that they got filled. Anyway ... It works!

Thanks!

Subject description: How can I tell if this PC has builtin recording or do I have to add something to do so?

I happened to remember that several years ago, I asked a similar question on the FATDOG thread and was helped, but I did not come away with a good understanding of tools to determine whether I had what it takes to record. This thread rekindle that pursuit.

My post on how I did this has been moved here

Others are invited to extend Puppy to address this.

Thanks. In my computer I see that you have to run retrovol before alsamixer so the "Digital" option appears. If you run alsamixer before retrovol "Digital" won't appear, but if you activate "Capture" from retrovol you still can record sound from the mic.

Now, even if I run retrovol before alsamixer, no Digital option appears (electronic mysteries ...). But it doesn't matter: as long as Capture is checked in retrovol I can record audio from the microphone.

I have seen circumstances where the controls available in Alsamixer and Retrovol change depending on whether or not headphones or microphone are plugged in. It seems as if some sound card hardware has the ability to switch functionality off and on dependent on circumstances, and this has an effect on what the alsa software can see.

I'm pretty sure I also read once that retrovol can only ever show controls that have already been detected by alsa so in theory should not ever display controls that are not present in alsamixer. Retrovol does show things more clearly than alsamixer though...

These days if I'm having sound issues I look at the alsamixer slider controls with all combinations of mic and / or headphones connected / disconnected and reboot between each test.

PostPosted: Wed 13 Aug 2014, 01:18    Post subject: Can Puppy Linux detect and report a Microphone's presence?

Judging from your prior post, @GreenGeek and I share the same view with this; namely Puppy/Linux needs a way that when a user wants to record from Microphone, it would be nice to have the system reply that "No Microphone is Present!" so that it provides emphatic direction to any user.

A user would know to, either:
  1. plugin a Microphone into the sound card's port
  2. OR, check the plugged in Microphone for an on/off switch
  3. OR, tell the system that the Microphone is on a different sound device/card
But, obviously, something like this may not be available in Linux....maybe.

This seems like something that is either overlooked in both Retrovol and ALSA or there is no way in sound card signaling of doing this, at all.

In my case everything seemed to be the same (only internal mic, no external mic nor headphones, ...) and, as told, while once the "Digital" option appeared, it didn't the other times.
