Loading Puppy on a way old laptop

#1 Post by razenxd »

Hello, an old IBM/Lenovo T42 came up on my hands and i decided to make this work for browsing and for watching videos on bed,
Well I made a Live usb of puppy and started trying them,
I must say know that it's my first experience with Linux,
Everything was good until the time i decided to connect to the internet, the wirless seems not to responding and at the same time if i plugg my ethernet it has internet.
I'm gonna do a full install in a moment and try if this still happens.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Sorry for my bad english also.
Regards

In puppy. To connect wireless. Try Connect>Wireless Lan> Barry Simple Network Masnager.

Hopefully you will see a wlan0. Pick it and connect. If needing password.
Type it in. Hopefully that is all there is.

Otherwise we will need your wirless card specs in another post.
T42 is not that old around these parts.
Puppy Version and whether you do a frugal or full install will help your cause in a big way also.

You should be fine with Puppy on that IBM. All of mine ran like a top on Puppy and were older than your model.

My full name model Is T42-2378 But dunno which one listed on Cnet, It has the max memory installed(2GB) and has a 1.7 Ghz intel Processor like the one in the link(Maybe its my exact model maybe not :( )
http://www.cnet.com/products/thinkpad-t ... 40-gb-hdd/

I'll try again when i'll be back home , from live usb but any recomedations till then should be fine :)
Thanks

Wireless Controller
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
It should work out of the box in any puppy with a later kernerl

Open a terminal and run the command: lspci -nn

Locate the [abcd:efgh] ID numbers for your wireless card. It might be [8086:4223].

Run the command: lspci -k

Locate the kernel driver installed for your card, if any.

Run the command: dmesg

Look for error messages at the end related to your wireless card.

Well The only thing i see with lspci -nn commandm related to wireless card is
Network controller [14b9:a504] or maybe u need the PCI bridge [8086:2448] ?

The installed kernel is airo and runnining the dmesg command i take some errors "mac enable reason=88"

Also i tried to load the module for the Wireless 2200/2915 and couldn't it load, it said it was loaded but when i was about to choose i was seeing Aironet drivers again, i guess i should change the kernel or something but with a quick search i didn't find how.
Also none of my connections are named as wlan as rokytnji stated, i see the one named eth0 (the wired one) and eth1 (the wireless one).

Also i didn't made a full install and still running puppy from usb stick(Dunno if it has something to do but i think i should mention it).
Thanks

Your WiFi adapter is a Cisco/Aironet, not an Intel. It uses the airo kernel module and Lupu 528 recognizes this [14b9:a504] device. So everything looks good.

Run the command: ifconfig eth1 up
And: iwlist eth1 scan

This should get you a report of your wireless neighbourhood.

It may be that this device only works with the old WEP encryption.

Hi...

Welcome to the forum :)

Please do the following if rcrsn51's instructions above don't work....

Please open a terminal and post the output of the following commands. Installing Sakura from the Puppy Package manager might make this easier...

Code: Select all

lspci -nn

Code: Select all

uname -r

Code: Select all

lsmod

Code: Select all

dmesg
This appears to be your wireless adapter but I would like to see the details.

Also i couldn't get why i shouldn't change to module reffered to my card and stay with the airo one?
Could u please explain it to me?
Thanks for ur time :)

Edit: something i noticed now, is that On Connection wizards it says that i got 4 available interfaces eth0,eth1,irda0 and wifi0 but it seems that wifi0 appears only there(as well as irda0 but i don't mind infrared :P )

It's pretty obvious from the results of your iwlist scan that the device is working and airo is the correct driver. So the only problem is getting connected to the CYTA1 WiFi router.

It appears that your adapter is an old 802.11b device, so CYTA1 needs to recognize that mode. You may need to set the router in "mixed mode".

It looks like WPA encryption should work.

Well I changed my router interface to 802.11b,802.11b(legacy)/g and still nothing, like before it says assosiated until 10 sec's then get disconected and still going.
Also i've noticed that i had wpa+wpa2 instead of simple wpa so i changed it also,But nothing seems to happen the problem remains :(

Edit: Well i changed security from wpa to wep and guess what, it connected!!
But since there are more than 10 machines connected to the router i did it just to see the results.
So Wpa isn't supported from my card or from the driver?
Cause i really would like to keep my security settings as is :/

You really don't want to permanently set your router on WEP encryption. But for a few dollars, you could buy a USB WiFi adapter that would work in Lupu with WPA.

Yeah i really don't :P
Btw i don't think that any1 will hijack my password and access my access point but just to be sure :P
Well i got one NextGear WN111 which i thinks it works but really i dont like the option to have an external adapter since the laptop got it's own.
It's also bad cause the laptop is heating a little bit and the usb's are in the place the laptop heats the most and also the usb is heating and i want this for the bed :P
So WPA isn't supported i can't do much from what i understand right?

Hi...

Thank you for posting the information I requested. I would have to agree that using a USB adapter might be your only other option here. :(

Nope You can use your pcmcia slot instead. It is always how I roll on ancient laptops.
I would physically disconnect the

02:02.0 Network controller [0280]: AIRONET Wireless Communications Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b [14b9:a504]

internal card though. So as to not confuse the issue on bootup.

I never used wireless usb on my ancient ibm laptops. Since they only had one usb port.

Another good one I used was a Dlink WNA 1330 pcmcia card.

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)

All I posted are wpa capable as my shop wireless is wpa protected.

If you are really serious about using that T43 in bed. That ebay chinese pcmcia card I am very happy with the N speeds on my IBM T23.
