how can I get my window's modem driver working on puppy

#1 Post by leon8200 »

Hi, I found this link on using window's driver's in linux
http://www.bauer-power.net/2007/09/usin ... linux.html

I have a conexant 56k dial up modem that I want to install in puppy but the problem is that the only (linux) driver for it is crippled to 14k, so I thought
that ndiswrapper (as described in the link above) could help me get my pup
online, so if anyone has any experience with this can you please help me get it working,
if I can get my linux pc online then I can swich to linux and finally ditch window's thanx :)

Don't know the answer to your question but have you tried Wary Puppy or a much older Puppy like Puppy 4.1.2?

Ive tried quite a few pup's, so far they all connect to a 14k connection, it take's over 30 minuet's just to load a page, and some never load at all,
I had posted a thread about my modem here before and they told me that linux only has a freeware verson for my modem because conexant want's money for the full verson driver, and I just can't afford it right now,

my modem is a (gateway data fax modem) this is what my (unknown device identifier) say's about my modem

chip: conexant systems PCI modem enumerator
pnpID: ven_14F1&DEV_1036$SUBSYS_026013EO&REV_08
vendor: Gateway
device: Gateway data fax modem
chip vendor: Conexant systems
chip: PCI modem enumerator

So to confirm, your windows machine connects with higher speeds with this particular modem and using the same service provider? Did you try Puppy 4.1.2? I suppose you have already tried to change the maximum speed of the modem to say 57600 in pupdial? If all this does not help, I think you should look out for another modem ( I have a mecer 56k with a rockwell chip filed away somewhere and I used it some time ago with puppy and it worked fine). The problem is that with a speed of 14k it's almost useless to access the internet and not worth it. Best you can do with that is to use an html only browser (like dillo) and turn off images. Alternatively, you can use Opera Mini browser on your desktop but then you need Java and an emulator to run it.

what I want to do is get my (window's) modem driver to work on puppy precise, using ndiswrapper, conexant only provides a crippled driver for my modem, so I want to use my (window's) driver instead

Hi...

If your system has a serial port, it would probably be best to purchase this modem. I used to have one almost like it and I've never had a problem with any Linux distribution being able to use it and at 56k. Back when dial-up modems were still commonly used, serial (and other hardware based) modems were preferred (and most often necessary) for establishing a dial-up connection using Linux.

If you still want to try getting yours to work, first make sure Conexant and/or Gateway permits their driver to be used in this manner (via their EULA) and find the model of your system on Gateway's site and their should be a section where you can download specific drivers for your model, including your modem. If you are able to extract the individual files to a flash drive, perhaps you can get your modem to work using ndiswrapper but I'm not sure and wouldn't know how to guide you in that.
