2.12 boot failure at video wizard (64 MB RAM)

#1 Post by beanni »

Hi all this is my very first venture into the world of Linux. I hope that it is as wonderful as everybody is making out. I am having some problems though. I haved tried to run the live cd of Puppy on my old notebook and it fails every time at the video wizard page.

My system is as follows:

Toshiba Satellite 2230CDS
Intel Celeron 550MHz
64 Mb RAM

I have tried the Live CD on my new flash 3Gb machine and it loads up like a dream, but everytime I get to the video wizard page on my notebook it fails. I don't even see the whole page. I am able to hit enter and it continues but freezes soon after.

Any help out there????? I would hate be discouraged before I even get started.

Puppy version 2.12-seamonkey

You might try a different puppy version. I tried a couple of versions that wouldn't work on my old itronix laptop. puppy109ce works great. 202 did not. I don't know why but...
good luck

ps
If you include your version number it might help the more knowledgeable people figure out the problem.

Thanks for the tip.

I am just in the middle of trying Xubuntu instead. So far it is going well. I am worried though that it will be more of a strain on my sytem than Puppy and so would still like to at least get Puppy going so I can compare the 2.

Anyone already done some comparisons of Xubuntu and Puppy on older machines?

SEARCH > top of page - keyword < xubuntu
Else - this will not solve your problems but doubtless WILL >

Result in more pointless distribution comparisons -
Plse - Research viability for own use before installing :

Puppy specifics -
Browse for prior posts/solutions before requesting help:

To answer last part: YES any Ubuntu version will be more hardware demanding.

Try doing a search under the topic: 'Toshiba Satellite and video'.
You will find plenty of information that might assist you.

Good luck!

Toshiba laptops seem to have their fair share of problems on first boot. I own one and had the same problem. Look here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... highlight=

These guys helped me get everything going. This is a great site for support.
