It's the same problem as 1.0.3. Here's the output of 'ls /dev/hd*':

It's some system you have there :)

Let me try rewording your question for common guys (like me): the assumed hard drives in Puppy are no more than four (a, b, c, d), which happen to be the ones available in most motherboards (two IDE slots x two drives, master and slave).

Many users (of client services) would be comfortable with that, I suppose...

I'm certain you're right. The reason why it's a problem is because, apparently, the Linux IDE drive mapping maps motherboard IDE last, instead of first, which means Puppy doesn't boot to X (or see motherboard hard drives) without lots of extra TLC if the machine has both motherboard and PCI IDE. And I would dearly love to be able to use Puppy to diagnose everything I work on!!!

I've got a vague memory that there's a configure option for the kernel to handle more than hd a-d.
So, maybe you'll have to experiement with a kernel recompile!

Now that is interesting. One question: When I boot directly off the Puppy CD, and it doesn't find /usr and therefore does not load X, am I using the same kernel as I am using when it does find /usr?

I ask this because when I give it a /usr it can find (on a VFAT partition as /dev/hdc2), it finds all my IDE devices, but when I don't do this, it doesn't. So if I were using two different kernels, that would be a straightforward cause...but if not, not.

Hi JonathanBrickman0000,

Now that you've got 1.0.4 you'll have MUT, start -> Utilities -> MUT
Start up MUT, and see if it can see your hde drive.
MUT is supposed to create new dev nodes for you when Puppy hasn't set them up already for you.
If it does set them up, and you've got a hard disk install of Puppy, the nodes will hang around when you next boot.
Do you need hde for boot purposes?

Yep. IDE, with one drive, with two partitions on the drive.
Now that you've got 1.0.4 you'll have MUT, start -> Utilities -> MUT
Start up MUT, and see if it can see your hde drive.
There is no way for me to do Start->Utilities->MUT, because that requires X, which requires /usr to be working; and without /hde and /hdf and /hdg, the system won't see my CD-ROMs, and I won't have a /usr without manually setting up /usr on hard drive partition /hdc2.

Yes, that is the whole point. I need /hde, /hdf, and /hdg. I doubt these need to be enabled by default, but if the boot sequence doesn't find /usr, it should try to set them up. I can't boot from anything attached to the PCI/IDE, which means /hda is not bootable.
