TahrPop - VESA video rather than XOrg?

#1 Post by darkstrike »

Hi all!

I've got an ancient 800mhz Pentium III that I am trying to install TahrPup on. I boot from a LiveCD and run the XorgWizard, the test goes ok and properly shows the dialog box, but the second I get to the desktop the machine kicks me back out to command line. I think it has something to do with XOrg as it has an ANCIENT video card in it.

What is the command to run the display in VESA instead? It used to be a choice on boot in older Puppy versions, but I didn't see it here...maybe I am blind! :)

Or does anybody know what may be happening so I can get XOrg working?

Thanks for any help!

xorgwizard [ENTER]

Select the vesa driver. Go through the rest of the wizard (don't recall, haven't had to use that option in ages).

There is no VESA driver....unless you mean the one that says "Nomodeset" - is that the XVESA driver? If that is the case, I've tried that and I get the same issue.

OK then you're probably screwed... don't know exactly, I don't use TahrPup, and IIRC the options usually depend on your hardware.

Just for ****s and giggles -- take a look at Precise 571 Retro, here. That will probably run more nicely on your hardware anyways.

Thanks mate - I've got a copy of Precise on my HDD already, I'll give that a go and see how I get along.

Cheers!
