cron uses UTC time |
|
I think I'm close to tracking down the source of my cron job problems.
crond app is using UTC time rather than system time.
Computer installation:
Windows XP machine ---> I've tried setting clock type to both Local time and GMT time and the problem is the same.
I've tried booting april64 with a CD and installing in a 16 GB USB stick.
I've found that I can make cron jobs work with the hour setting if
I use the UTC time by typing in the terminal ' date -u'
Then once I know the UTC date I can set the cron job using UTC time.
The popup message will occur at the proper time (as measured by UTC)

| That is exactly why I suggested:
Use this for crontab -e, it should message every minute:
Code: | * * * * * gxmessage Hello don570 |

The minute setting is always correct because UTC time and system time
always uses the same minute. For instance
Code: | 9 * * * * gxmessage Hello don570 |
will always pop up a message at 9 minutes after every hour.
When there is no hour set then there is no problem.
I've never seen this problem with any other distro.
Am I the only one seeing this problem??

Is the time set correctly in the BIOS ?

Quirky April 7.0.2 final Subject description: Quirky April 7.0.3 |
|
I noticed Quirky April 7.0.3 was available at ibiblio so I've installed
to a 32gb SDHC card.
I was in Mint 17 64bit and downloaded the install script and followed
instructions.
The script stopped because it couldn't find urxvt or xterm so I added
xterm to Mint and tried again, this time when it was going to download
the file it erred out saying the checksum was different.
I downloaded the files and the checksums were good, so ran the script
again.
I ended up with a "UEFI:Generic Storage Device 9454" entry when I
rebooted hitting the esc key to bring up the boot menu.

Did a frugal install on a Acer ZG5 netbook with 1GB RAM.
The Quirky Installer window is a little too tall for the 1024x600 screen and the bottom two elements are not visible. But I knew what they were from running on another desktop, so I tabbed through it blindly OK.
I notice the Live CD allocates about 2/3 of system RAM for the zram, but the frugal installed version does about 3/4 RAM. It ran OK, but not much room for doing stuff. Only about 130MB free and 600MB RAM used. Already had April installed on the netbook on a small 2GB partition where it takes up only 850MB and it runs much better there with more free RAM and HD space, but just wanted to try frugal to see what happened.
The q.sfs file was about 490MB. The save gave an error a couple times "directory missing or not found" but I could not pin it down. Seemed to save settings OK except for the first time .history was lost. And seems that network interface does not come up automatically after reboot if SNS is used but does come if configured Network Wizard.
I tried to rename the quirky directory after it was installed (since I couldn't see it off the install screen) and change grub accordingly, but it did not like that and did a kernel panic and crashed hard, so I put it back to default april-7.0.2. I guess it needs psubdir support or something.

Yes, 7.0.3 is out, see announcement:
http://bkhome.org/news/?viewDetailed=00187
Install instructions:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky6/amd64/april-7.0.3/install-readme.htm
Right, so there are issues with the Installer!

Installed 7.0.3 Full on ext4 Partition. All is well.
Boot up is fastest of all Puppies I've tried (6 seconds?). Using only 90MB of RAM on startup.
Only tiny hiccup was that I had to save "april-7.0.3.usfs.xz" (141MB) manually from don570's link to hard drive (mnt/sda2) outside of RAM because my RAM was too full (11MB free) to use automatic method from install (which tries to save file inside RAM).

Barry's April downloads for 32bit and 64bit found here |
|
Thanks @BarryK
Three methods of operation on BIOS PCs
- DVD to RAM
- Frugal to RAM via HDD/SSD/USB or if your PC will boot directly, SD/microSD
- FULL install on HDD/SSD/USB partitions or full-drive units on either BIOS/UEFI PCs
Barry's April 64bit files found here (IBIBLIO) and faster HERE (NLUUG)
Barry's April 32bit files found here and faster HERE
Hope this helps users

Tried the GUI installer with 7.0.3 and let it download option. Got an error when it tried to save file to /tmp location. It didn't ask to save somewhere else where there was more space. So I just grabbed the file manually and install went fine. Installed to USB flash and HD partition.
Tried the ISO. Frugal install option went away for netbook. Install link just runs GUI installer for drive or partition. Assume it was hard denial by the under 1.2 GB RAM tick box, whereas on 7.0.2 it let it slide?
The HD install footprint really is getting smaller, nice! It was under 500MB on 6.1.4 and then blew up to around a Gig for 6.0.5 and 6.2. April was 800MB but now down to 600MB with 7.0.3.

Installed 7.0.3 on all USB sticks. No issues. Everything perfect.
Running Quirky 6.1.4 on two partitions on main hard drive. Wondering if they can ever be upgraded and/or when it will be a good time to try a fresh install with Quirky 7. I tried it on the hard drive once already and it didn't work very well there; too many things missing after installation and it didn't run right. Perhaps recent upgrades fix these issues? Perhaps it is best to wait for more upgrades before trying again?
Meantime, I boot from USB sticks and run the operating system from there, writing my files to the hard drive, then backing them up to the USB stick! So cool! Lovin' it! Gotta be creative! Make it work!
