How to split mp3 files using mp3splt

Download either mp3splt-gtk-0.5.7a-i386.pet or mp3splt_2.2.6a_gui.pet

Both worked for me but the latter appears better made.
First install mp3splt-gtk .
Start mp3splt-gtk. Make sure that SnackAmp is chosen in Preferences > Player .
Quit mp3splt-gtk

Now install snackAmp player from
http://snackamp.sourceforge.net/release ... 386.tar.gz

Install the folder called 'linux' in /root .
For convenience in launching snackAmp
put a line in /root/.jwmrc-tray

Code: Select all

<TrayButton popup="SnackAmp" icon="mini-record.xpm">exec:/root/linux/snackAmp</TrayButton>

Restart jwm and you will see a new addition to tray.

Launch snackAmp and make a change in preferences.

Tools > Preferences > Miscellaneous
to select the option 'Enable Socket Interface'

Quit and restart snackAmp again and open a mp3 file and make sure the
volume is high enough to hear the song. There is a built-in mixer under
Tools > Show mixer
Keep snapAmp playing!!!


Launch mp3splt-gtk and click on 'Connect' button.
The name of currently playing song should appear in file field,
and the player icons of mp3splt-gtk should work.
Click on plus button to create split points.
Click on 'splitpoints' tab button. More adjustments are possible,
then click on green check mark at the top of window to do the split.
The mp3 file will be found in the destination folder which can be set by user.


Note : If this doesn't work, close apps and do the procedure a second time.

Audacious is far better than snackamp. It works the same way
i.e. you click the 'Connect' button.

What is the difference with regular file-splitting using CLI-based < split >
located at /usr/bin/split ? (besides the obvious CLI / GUI difference)

Any advantages to using this particular mp3splt app on an mp3 file?

The GUI (after the connection to Audacious is made) allows the
cut to made very accurately. It's complicated to set the markers though,
so I am currently using a Windows program.

..But it's not complicated to make the connection between Audacious and mp3splt

I know there's a simple command that can be used but you need to know the times accurately and that's not easy with mp3 format.

Wait til the song is finished, close the recording file and split with Audacity?

Opening a 2 hour long file of a college radio program is tedious with audacity
so I prefer a special mp3 editor.
