Technically anyrhing is possible, but I think most people wouldn't put a high priority on this.
some window managers can do it though - you may want to track them down.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Hello, cannonball.

1st impression : let's not confuse WhineDose* Explorer with ROX! (hehe)
Or oranges and carrots, even if they are of a similar color... :)

So... in Linux... :)

1) Some file managers can have tabs, like PCMan and Nautilus and
Thunar (but don't quote me on this, maybe find some screen captures of
those file managers, I hate their clumsiness...)

Image

2) As disciple mentioned above, some window managers do what's called
"grouping", like pekwm and jwm. But double check, because "grouping"
doesn't mean the same thing for all window managers. In other words, a
jwm "grouping" doesn't do the same thing as a pekwm "grouping".

In pekwm**, "grouping" means that you can associate 2 or 3 windows
in a pekwm config. file called "autoproperties". For the sake of argument:
let's say I configure the pekwm "autoproperties" to associate folders
"my-documents" and "my-applications" in one (1) ROX-Filer window.

Then, when I load "my-documents" in ROX, the "my-applications" title
appear automatically right beside it in the title bar. And I can view the
one OR the other simply by clicking on its title, they use the same
window, no new window is loaded.

In jwm, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but "grouping" means
grouping of properties for a single window, rather than the grouping
together of actual windows.

I hope this answers at least part of the question. (This is a pretty wide
and complex subject...) BFN.
