Logoff takes different times in different USB sticks

#1 Post by Alex Hamilton »

I am running Puppy on 2 usb sticks created from the same ISO file on Windows. I used Rufus to create bootable usb sticks. One of the usb sticks is 4GB and the other 8GB, but they are identical in every other way.

The larger USB stick (8GB) takes nearly 3 minutes to save to Slackosave and log off, whilst the other (4GB) manages to do it in just over a minute.

I am assuming that the longer log off time with the larger USB is caused by saving "empty space". Is my assumption correct and is there a way to speed up log off time?

Many thanks,
Alex

I have my Puppies set up so they NEVER auto-save session changes.
I can choose to manually save changes during a session.
The time that takes depends on how extensive are the changes.
Normally less than 30-seconds.
If I DO want to make&save some change[s], I'd do that at the beginning of a session, before doing any other things, so that those other things are NOT saved.

When I go to shutdown or reboot, my Puppies are set up to ask [during that process] "save or not?", with the default configured as NOT.
When I hit <Enter> to choose "Not", it only takes about 3 seconds to shutdown or begin rebooting.

Thank you for that Sylvander, but that would mean that anything I added in a session, like emails, would be lost on log off. However, I will test your method and thank you again for suggesting it.

Best regards,
Alex

I use Thunderbird [TB] for emails, and I moved the TB profile out of the pupsave file to a location [/mnt/home/Mail] on the "Home" partition [sda5].
[You could save your stuff anywhere you liked, so long as that location was acessible, and outside of the pupsave]
Hence, all changes to TB [e.g. emails, configurations, etc] are saved regardless, and the links within the pupsave file to the moved TB profile are in all pupsave backup copies.
Hence, if I delete the pupsave and restore a backup, all the up-to-date emails etc are still displayed.
All of my Puppies have the same changes made, and access the same profile, so I can access my emails from any/each/all of my Puppies.
I make independent backups of the contents of the "Home" partition, BUT...
I really aught to make more frequent backups of the TB profile.
So far nothing has ever gone wrong, so I've never lost any emails etc.

Same brand?
Same format?
What format?
USB 2 or 3?
Using the same computer USB port?
Is the port a USB 2 or 3?

Doing the exact same tasks while booted with them?

What version of Slacko?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I am not skilled enough to do that. I found TB profile with <CTRL-H> whilst in /home and I moved it outside puppysave, but then TB would not load. I need to change the path to the new location so that TB can find it and I don't know how to do that.

Can you help?

Thanks

I am not sure about the brand, Bigpup, because they are both "proprietary" and I don't know where the retailer got them. They are run on the same computer but not from the same usb port. All my ports are USB2 and both USB sticks are vfat.

I am running Slacko 5.7.0.

Even just loging on and off without performing any tasks the larger USB (8GB) takes much longer to save and log off.

Enter the following command unto a Terminal

Code: Select all

lsusb
then press the ENTER key.
and copy the output into your next post.
That might help or might not help.

Yes.
Follow the instructions in this post., and also read the posts after this, leading to my post reporting success.
The key item is step-2, to edit your TB profiles.ini file, so as to specify the new/moved location of the xxxxxx.default folder.
Once specified in profiles.ini, this folder is the only one that TB will use.
Any other similar folders will be ignored.

Wow! That worked. I needed to keep emails on the USB stick, because the main purpose of running Puppy is to have a completely transportable OS that I could plug in and use on any computer.

So I made a directory /mnt/home/TMail and copied the profile there and changed profies.ini as you showed. Thunderbird works like before.

Thank you again for this.

Thank you. I got the list, but no means of copying it anywhere that I could see. How do I attach the list to a reply here?

Thanks,

Just for a note..imap would mean th e profile would remain a few hundred k so simply having the same profile without sharing keeps space usage to a minimum since the server becomes your common source... assuming the non downloaded IMAP config is used...indeed its designed with this in mind.

Mike, Thank you for that, but I am not sure that I can do anything about it, because my ISP is Pop3. Is there a way that I can change to IMAP collection of emails without causing havoc on my system?

In the console terminal that comes with Puppy.

Copy- left click hold and highlight

Paste- middle button click

Also works to copy from terminal and paste to other programs.

Also if you use copy method that comes with other programs you can paste in terminal by middle mouse click.

If you do not have a middle mouse button.

Clicking the left and right buttons, at the same time, will have same effect as middle mouse button.

shift+insert will also work to paste.

Thank you bigpup and here is the list. The "slow" usb stick is on the top line.

Ah ok yes that does limit possibilities.
Just posted as part of my 'keep yer save small' campaign :D )

If you ever feel like a change gmx.com are pretty good webmail that offer pop and imap and free storage. You can usually forward or grab mail from an existing account which makes changing address easier. It also frees you from being tied to a particular ISP.

Well glad mystery solved anyway.

In Windows.
Run chkdsk on the 8GB drive.
Could be something wrong with the Vfat file system on it.

If you had anything put on it by Windows. There is a chance the file system is fragmented.
Run Windows defrag on it to see.

The sub Stick is checked automatically every time I use it and then go into Windows. I tried to defrag. but the response was that it did not need it. Anyway, Puppy crashed and I could not recover the screen display, so I formatted the usb and re-installed Puppy. It works better now, but it is still noticeably slower that Puppy on another usb. I can live with that. Life is too short to waste it looking for what is not there.

Many thanks for your help,

Alex
