Security Questions in Puppy Linux Usage

#1 Post by gcmartin »

Puppy LInux has been a great service to the many of us who use it on a daily basis.

Throughout the forum we have had discussions on security concerns and product fixes over the past decade.

Barry Kauler has (for those who haven't noticed) been involved with his personal education of Android. As such he, too, like the many over the years, sought to address his use with an "eye" on best practices in securing his use of the operating system on his phone.

Understanding that everyone of us does not want to be "robbed" of valuable information, I have often wondered about several issues relating to security.
  • Personally, how and what are the things any individual needs to pay attention to as we march into our personal futures?
  • What tools and what Puppy information exist to show "breaches"?
  • Have you knowingly had a "breach" where information was compromised on any device? (Explain how you were compromised)
If you post responses to this thread, PLEASE, add to the post's SUBJECT row which/both, of the above, that you are commenting on. OR PLEASE add to the post's SUBJECT row an indication if there are additional concerns of issues in PUPPY Linux that needs security review as there have been breaches in the past when a security feature was not present.

This thread's intent is to expose our notions on what things we should be aware of in either practice or knowledge in how Puppy provides its security for our benefit.

IMHO the most important thing to keep in mind is the browser. 50%+ of all things that go bad start with browser permissions/allowances. Puppy can be quite secure until the browser negotiates an ssl3 connection. The next 40% is the MAIL. Downloading MAIL really must stop if this discussion carries weight. "Go there and decide" is a safer way to negotiate the minefield that is MAIL. Convenience be damned. Let google/yahoo/other store it and take the risk... why should YOU? As to the other 10%... we're all vunerable.
