For comparison purposes... FF27.0.1 is showing 220-230Mb (Virtual = 550Mb) with 4-6 tabs open on this site.

One small nit, Puppy's Firewall is taking 6-7 Mb even though its always OFF..

you could probably remove the script for it in /root/Startup... I never use it either.

OK, I may have a solution to FF bloat...

I'm testing Opera right now. Now I need to see if I can make it look normal enough to continue... ;-)

But thus far, I'm running it on my dual boot XP laptop -- it looks like a pretty light load...

OK, Opera is somewhat better on some pages, still not great.

Facebooks conspires with FF to consume all available computer resourses...

This suggestion seemed to help (quoting from the article):

"Click on Adblock Plus icon>Filter Preferences>Custom Filters>Click on Element Hiding Rules>on the right, click on Add Filter>copy this filter: facebook.com###leftCol> Close
This is what I did and works for me."

https://www.facebook.com/help/community ... 7316896327

Edit:

I continued on with the element blocker, and blocked everything on the right side as well -- Firefox/Facebook is now usable on 1GB RAM...

Make sure the get the chat box, and all the updates that appear on the right (it appears that even if zoomed off screen, they are still active...) To get the whole "updates" column highlighted, I repeatedly clicked the "w" (wider) button until it encompassed the whole thing...

Edit2:

Replicating this on my faster laptop, getting rid of the junk on the right side seems to help a lot (I didn't block the left...yet)

Well facebook is designed to be IE/Windows friendly just like skype since its now owned by microsoft.
Flash block or disabling flash is a good move too for many pages..the rail fares site goes from unusable to no problem for me...they have 6 flash items all running at once...just an example.

Actually this might make more sense as a 'how-to'...ie tips to make your browser run better...the subject comes up a lot and it might not get so lost there. Indeed i forget the stuff i have done to make the internet usable on our pentium 3s until I try without.
