My Win98se machine (733mhz, 256mb) uses a Dick Smith XH1154 (intel 536ep chipset) dialup internal modem which I have found difficult to get online with using Linux. Could I attach a serial external modem on this machine and use that solely for the Puppy live cd? In other words, when I take out the Puppy cd can I boot Win98se normally using my internal modem, and when the Puppy cd is in it uses the external modem.

Currently I have a disk for Puppy 1.09ce

if youre asking what i think youre asking, yes, it should be possible to do what you want to.

however, you may find it can be more difficult... and sometimes, just having the softmodem installed/plugged into the pc board can complicate setting up the external modem. it can, that doesnt mean it will. in fact i have a softmodem in win and a hardware modem in puppy. basically the thing youre trying to do. both modems SEEM to work as expected.

You will have a problem trying to use an external modem in LiveCD mode -
Probaby there is no Req'd driver support in the initrd image.

Consult your manual or Google for Linux support first.

Amish - thank you for your informative reply including the warning of possible modem detection difficulties. Good to hear that my proposed setup works for you. Thank you again.

Gn2 - I have had my Puppy live cd online with a serial external modem, but it was on a machine with Ubuntu as the installed OS and no internal modem installed. Thank you for your input.
