New Subsection in the Hardware Subforum

#1 Post by Smithy »

Never really got some quantifiable info on Puppy on Macs, but would it be an idea
to create a subsection in Hardware Forum for the macs?
Reason being, that those old macs have had shabby treatment, only firefox 3xx available on the mini etc etc (Firefox 3 is quite nice though :). I bet Puppy would be a good replacement for the older macs (especially intel based) and keep them from being thrown away. At least the info will all be in one place.
Whaddya ya reckon?

why not, Fatdog64 runs better on MacTels (my 2010 minimac) than Apples' OSX does  used OSX tools to shrink its overuse of the harddrive and now have a big empty NTFS that both OSX and FatDog can use to share files.

How big is the MAC community which wants to convert?

Actually, Intel MACs can run almost any x86/x86-64 distro or OS.

The truly "older" MACs were PowerPC vs Intel CPUs.

There is little info in Puppyland.

One of the forum problems is its inability to be upgraded as resources are not available to do the upgrade/migration.

Thats a good point, from a linux view its just another PC that likes to route hardware everything as a USB devices, like the RaspPi does. But for some reason the owners think Apple Hardware somehow is special

We could just start a thread under Hardware and ask for a sticky.

Hi Billtoo

Interested that you have the "Activate Broadcom" desktop icon showing.

Have you activated the wl driver? Are you using it OK?

I've never had any feedback, good or bad, whether this mechanism requested by rcrns51 works for people with Broadcom wifi.

Thanks
peebee

Great starter info Ted Dog and GC Martin.
Here's a half decent database for starters.
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/m ... cmini.html

May be if darkcity was interested, (I think it's his sort of bag) a wiki thing could be made, along the lines of:
MAC Type:
Model Number:
Specs:
Puppy Available: Yes/NO (Caveats)
Boot Methods Available: CD/DVD, USB, Hard Drive.
Puppy Versions and Derivatives Currently Available. (Link to thread).

Hi peebee,

I didn't need to use the Activate Broadcom icon on the macmini but I
moved the flash drive to an HP desktop that has Broadcom Corporation BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n
and when I ran the network wizard all that showed up was eth0.

I clicked on the Activate Broadcom icon and rebooted, ran the network
wizard again and wlan0 was there, continued with the setup and wireless
works now.

EDIT: I compiled the ati driver for the graphics card, going to run this on the HP now:
