How to set up wifi in Lucid 528?

Hello,
I'm very, very new to Puppy Linux. I've only ever used it for data recovery after I over-tweaked Ubuntu, but now I want to explore it a bit more. I tried to set up networking and simply can't get it to work. These are my adapters:
Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

How do I know which module to select for these? I'm using Lucid Puppy 528.

Assuming that there is a suitable driver for your adaptor....

Look on desktop for icon 'Connect' or something similar.
Launch it and choose a program that will find the suitable driver
and load it permanently.

Follow the instructions you are given.
There should be a message explaining which driver is now loaded.


Once this is done the connection to the wifi network should be easy
by running the app pnethood or anything similar.

Lucid should have a good selection of drivers inside.

If you do not see your wlan0 device listed in the beginning, you probably need a driver for your hardware.

Ah. Looking at one of those pages, I see that encryption should be turned off to connect and that only certain encryption types work. I'm on an enterprise network, so I can imagine that security is even more difficult to navigate. Perhaps LuPu will forever be my data recovery agent. It's really, really good at that.

No? When I go into the Network WIzard, no modules are found. I have to do it manually. I've tried the autoprobe function and gone through 10+ cycles and it hasn't found one that discovered a new interface. There has to be a better way than just clicking autoprobe a billion times. How can I determine which module to load manually?

You might need to compile the appropriate driver for your card. An easier solution might be try another distro like tahrpup.

I think you need to try a newer version of Lucid Puppy, if you want to use Lucid.
The driver you need will not work in the Linux kernel that is in Lucid 528.

The driver you need is ath9k_htc

I have not tried them all, but the Lucid Puppy V5.2.8.7 versions, that use newer kernels, should work

Tahrpup 6.0.2 has this driver. I am using it.

Your AR9485 device is handled by the ath9k kernel module. (ath9k_htc is for USB devices). If you run the command "lspci -nn" the vendor: product ID codes should be 168C:0037.

However, the version of ath9k in Lucid 528 is too old and does not recognize the device. You need to upgrade to a Puppy with a 3.x kernel.

To check, run "modinfo ath9k" and see if it matches your ID codes.
