Mumble issue with Tahrpup 6.0.2 & 6.0.3

#1 Post by Exilian »

[I originally posted the issue here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 208#862208 but rec'd no replies and was unsure where else to put it.]

Hello, all,

I'm using an old Dell Latitude D620 with ~1g of RAM and a dual booted SCSI hard drive with 55g (40 for windows xp and 15 for puppy).

The dual boot is WinXP and Puppy Tahr 6.0.3 [it still says 6.0.2 but that's due to a layering problem according to 666philb in this forum. I do my research before bothering folks :) ]

Mumble works just fine when booted with Windows but when I use it under Puppy, the window appears when Mumble starts but is empty and unusable. Empty as in it is entirely blank except for the border which says it's mumble. It must be "killed" with the process manager at that point. Will not close.

I used ppm to install it and now it will neither work nor uninstall as I tried both.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I use mumble often (twice a week) for meetings.

Side note: Thanks so much for this great distro, regardless. I've loved it thus far and it's been a joy to use. I hope to become an expert with it ASAP.

Stay well!

Is it listed in the PPM uninstall list?
If yes, what happens when you select it and try to uninstall?

Some things to try:

Run Mumble from the console and see if it give any errors.

Code: Select all

mumble
This thing needs a lot of dependent files and packages.
When downloading from PPM.
First, make sure PPM data base is updated.
PPM->configure->update database.

In PPM do a search for Mumble.
Make sure you are choosing the complete program.
You will probable see parts of it, also listed.

After you install Mumble and dependencies, reboot.
This makes sure anything needed to be loaded, by the boot process, gets loaded.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thanks so much for the reply, Bigpup.

I'll get started on your suggestions immediately.

Run Mumble from the console and see if it give any errors.
Code: mumble
Done (Since it's such a quick thing to do in the short time I have, at the moment).

Same result in every way, as I wrote above.

Here is the "printout":

Code: Select all

PulseAudio: Connection failure: Connection refused
G15LCDEngineUnix: Unable to connect to G15Daemon.
CELT bitstream 8000000b from /usr/lib/mumble/libcelt0.so.0.7.0
Locale is "en_US" (System: "en_US")
TextToSpeech: Failed to contact speech dispatcher.
Database SQLite: "3.8.2"

I updated everything as you instructed.

Yes, it is listed in the uninstall options.

Uninstall failed.

I've installed everything associated with Mumble in the PPM (except the server software) and still have the problem.

I believe I've followed every direction of yours to the letter and patiently await any response.

Again, my sincere thanks for your help, thus far.

All the best to you.

That uninstall message is just telling you that the other listed programs or files need to be uninstalled before you can uninstall Mumble.
So, look at the list in the error message.
Pick one to uninstall.
You should find it in the PPM uninstall list.
Uninstall it.

You will have to do each one listed in the error message.

When you get all uninstalled Mumble should uninstall.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I have never used Mumble, so I was hoping someone that has, would come along.

I am giving you ideas, to try, for things that have helped me on other programs I have used.
Getting stuff from Ubuntu repositories is iffy.
Sometimes they are just too different for Puppy.
Other times they just work.
Mumble seems to be an iffy one.

About getting Mumble working.

Run this:
menu->Setup->Check dependencies of installed packages.

Run this for Mumble.

Anything show up missing?
I've installed everything associated with Mumble in the PPM (except the server software)
If you are talking about mumble-server_1.2.4 install it.

This info may help:
This is something to give you ideas to try.

This is for running in Ubuntu.
You are running as root in Puppy.

All that apt-get stuff is done by Puppies PPM, so do not try any of it.

Sincere apologies for the late reply but I had a last minute business trip to very rural Oklahoma (no Internet access at my location).

I'll start implementing your further suggestions as soon as I unpack.

Again, many thanks for all of your help.
