a question about upgrading from 2.12 to 2.13

#1 Post by Bert »

Hi all,

This is the first time I want to upgrade to a new Puppy version, to avoid the extra work needed after a fresh install.

Situation : Puppy 2.12 on ide-CF, no HD, no cd.
I downloaded 2.13 to a usb-stick.

In the release notes, Barry writes:
For USB or frugal-hd installations, just copy the latest files (vmlinuz, initrd.gz, pup_213.sfs and zdrv_213.sfs) to the USB or hd boot media.
Is this what I should do::

1. Open 2.13 with Xarchiver ( thanks Dougal!) and extract the four new files to /initrd/mnt/dev_ro1.

2. Delete the old versions?

Thank you! Looking forward to 2.13!!

Hi mmmkay,

Sorry for this late reply. Hope that in the meanwhile, you were able to solve your problem!

This is how I solved it, an hour after posting my question:

1. I removed the compact flash containing the puppy 2.12 I wanted to upgrade to 2.13 from the ide adapter and replaced it with another CF card that had an older copy of 2.12. So that became hda.

2. Using MUT, I mounted the usb stick, containing the new 2.13-iso, and the CF I wanted to upgrade and that was now in an external usb card reader.

3. Using ArchiveR, I opened the ISO file on the usb stick and extracted the four files to the CF I wanted to upgrade.

4. Rebooting, with the now upgraded CF back as hda, everything went automatic, although the upgrading took a long time on my poor Via C3.

As you are booting from usb, not ide flash, it would be slightly different, but the same logic would work. At least that's what I think.

The fact that my question got no replies, shows that

a. I am not equiped with the brains to ask technical questions, being a minor poet in daily life!
b. I am an eternal newbie
c. only a minority of Puppy users are using real solid state computers, most of them relying on spinning devices, HD, CD, or DVD.

Upgrading to 2.13 is worth the effort!!! Puppy is faster, like it used to be in the 1.xx series, both booting and running, ROX has become almost enjoyable, fonts are incredibly crisp!

* After the upgrade, my Firefox was no longer the default browser. It is still there, somewhere in the file shrub, and I am unable to reactivate it.

* PSI, Mu's excellent software installer disappeared too.

* Same for the dotpups I downloaded.

Puppy 2.13 is a big step forward! Some of the known issues remain:

- No shutdown of the computer after power off.
- No Numlock on-boot on my be-latin keyboard.
- Package management is still problematic, but it looks like that will be solved soon.!

Hope this can help,

kind regards,
Bert Vercauteren
