Permissions issues(Solved)

#1 Post by userxbw »

this doesn't work

Code: Select all

Firefox and these other applications which access the Internet run as user spot for security reasons, some see this as being overly cautious. If you want Firefox to run as user root and be able to write anywhere, edit /usr/share/applications/Firefox.desktop (right click and choose Open as Text). Change the line Exec=firefox-spot to Exec=firefox (or seamonkey, google-chrome, etc) and save.
as per instructions

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Seamonkey Browser
GenericName=Web Browser
Comment=Your web, the way you like it
#Exec=seamonkey-spot %U
Exec=seamonkey
Icon=seamonkey48.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml+xml;application/vnd.mozilla.xul+xml;text/mml;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;
StartupNotify=false
X-MultipleArgs=false
X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.16
Categories=WebBrowser;
Encoding=UTF-8

then I opened up the browser went to a page to try it. tried to download a file outside the default Downloads folder. sdb1 actually. still get the error message do not have permissions to do so.

I changed all of the browser.desktop files to match this including the default.desktop

and while on the subject what is the

Code: Select all

 %U
used for?

This post could easily have been continued here, where Step was nice enough to address your concerns.

OH, sorry I missed that, but guess what. maybe because this forum isn't even sending emails even though I checked Notify me...

First he gave links to a 'local' webpage that I can't get to. I bet it is the same instructions I posted which as you see do/are not work/working.

mod:

On second thought let me check my spam box 4 Puppy emails

yes, this is the third time I've marked these replies 'not spam' including this one that you sent me. gmail is the offender.

not accustom to having to look in spam, especially after marking the address from: as 'not spam'.

so where is this fatdog64 702 thread someone in here told me about recently, btw?

I don't know what thread you mean, but there is a fairly recent thread somewhere in the forum about how to get Gmail to stop calling forum notifications spam.

Already read them prior to posting. etc...

This is not a 'normal' dog we're working with here, as I have discovered this while trying to train it. :shock:

I am the 'someone' who told you twice about that thread. I also told you to click the link in my signature. It's at the bottom of this post, can you see it?
