Security updates to apps?

#1 Post by harrisnyc »

Hi all,

Do apps that are installed via Puppy Package Manager ever receive security updates/patches? If so, how? I just want to understand this better.

Thanks in advance.

Guess not! Oh well... Looks like I'll go with Debian.

edit: It sounds like you might like DebianDog. Here's a comment rufwoof made about it

That's one of the main reasons I like DD - Debian seem to keep right on top of fixes and also stick to stable versions of programs.

Toni and Fred do a great job of puppy'fying Debian (I frugal boot (Porteus style)). Best of both worlds :)

Hello harrisnyc.

Sorry I missed your post last week. Please accept my apologies.

Puppy does not update itself. For that, you'd need a "rolling-release" type of distro,
like Arch or OpenMandriva.

Generally speaking, official Puppies simply follow the updates offered by their
"feeding" distro. The philosophy being that it's enough that a new Puppy is
published +/- every 6 months, and that this new Puppy version normally
incorporates updates.

If you want the most recent, bleeding-edge, stuff for your Puppy, you have to
compile it yourself or stay tuned to this forum for people who do. (E.g. forum
members OscarTalks, don570, myself and many others.)

A last note: Puppy-specific utilities, such as PMusic, PFind, Pmenu, etc., (by
forum members zigbert and radky, among others) are constantly being updated by
their developers.

I hope this helps.

BFN.
