Winblow friendly translation ? |

Do you think that a window refugee will understand your list of apps ?
My suggestion is: 1. kind of app 2. name of the app
E.g.
Browser - Seamonky
Multimediaplayer - Gxine
etc.
Speaking for myself: when I read a word like "gxine", I am prepared to quit for not the slightest whtat it might be, phaps a tweaker's tool etc.
"Ark" ????
But mu suggestion applies to the whole of linux. Nobody seems to care, just moving on the develop an even more advanced app etc.
If one wants to make it accessible for windows refugees you should try to speak their language.
Unbelievable what you know to squeez in 1 cd. I once tried you older teenpup could not run as an iso. Same here ?)
Wonderful piece of work though.

Hello nancy reagan,
I was asked to compile a list of Applications and their Version numbers for someone who knows Linux very well. I'd already emailed them this list before posting it here on the forum.
I just thought the information might be of interest and it never crossed my mind to think of Windows Users as that wasn't the intension.

Do not take it personally : it is what a want to say to any linux tweaker.
Your bag of gold might go unnoticed by the usual Winblower which is a waste of energy.
The general tweaker goes for yet another even more wonderful project and simultaneously wanting Winblowers to appreciate it ...

List of Apps in TEEpup 2009 Legacy Subject description: Note to Windows Refugees and The Linux Curious |
|
These are hard concepts to get your mind around when you're used to plunking down a couple hundred $ for an operating system, another $100 or so for absolutely essential anti-malware, and another couple hundred for programs you actually want to use. LINUX IS FREE. And with Puppy Linux you don't even have to install it to find out what programs it has. Just download the ISO, burn it to a CD and reboot. And with John Biels' TEENpup series, his objective was to produce a CD that had everything the average teenager (and by extrapolation, every average user) might need. So if your Linux experience level is so slight that the name of an included application means nothing to you, the easy way to find out what it does is scroll thru the submenus 'till you find it --the submenu will provide a hint-- and click on it. Clicking won't break it, or your entire Puppy OS. Then, if you're still curious, you can search this forum,
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29754
or google the app for more information or alternative programs.
The most valuable resource Puppy Linux has is our creative Puppy, Puplet and App developers. And their most valuable resources are their minds and time. So while in a perfect world their communications would be with sufficient precision to satisfy everyone, in the real world it is better that they use their resources to do for us that which we can't do for ourselves.

Hi
Any potential or current Puppy user (even dev's) should have a really good look at John's latest TeenPup.
It does most if not all of the things that is often asked for by n00bie Puppy users.
Very n00bie friendly and runs very well as a frugal install on an old 6/7 year old acer laptop (233mb ram. 2.5Ghz celeron proc. 512ish swap partition. ext2/ext3)
I've also run it frugal on my other laptop (96mb ram. 1Ghz celeron proc. 250ish swap partition. ext2)
However it is slower on that spec. and would obviously run better as a full HD install (with a swap partition) on that type of machine.
On startup it recognises my touchpad automagically - it also does the same with the wired ethernet internet connection.
Click on internet - and it runs - online straight away.
(No save file - running live in ram)
The built-in help and tips are brilliant - second to none - just try.
Plug in a USB - up pops Pdrive and a folder opens showing your files.
Ok - it is a larger download - but when you look at what it comes with you will be astounded.
Whilst it may not be absolutely perfect - it is very close and is a big pot of GOLD that is well worthy of a long look.
Very grateful for all your work John - very best regards - Ray.

Showfoto Subject description: teenpup with a kernel 3.0.25 |
|
2016, keep your Teenpup in safe place. Some applications are unique as showfoto. I run it this morning but it's not the fonction i am looking for. (panorama)
I run teenpup with a kernel 3.0.25. Photographic edition is more my cup of tea than remasterizing Puppies, but for teenpup, i had to do it (Wireless connection)

Switching TEENpup's Kernel |
|
Hi pelo,
I am also a great fan of TEENpup. I felt its many great applications, some not otherwise available in Puppies, made it a valuable operating system even if I couldn't use it to access the Web. But the last time I tried to Frugally install it I couldn't get it to run.
Obviously, your switching of its kernel has breathed new life into it. Perhaps doing so would overcome the problem i encountered, Thank you for the idea.
But "No good deed should go unpunished," So, could you kindly tell us how you did it. Was it basically by applying the instructions jrb provided at the beginning of this thread? http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=453164#453164. Something else? Do you recall running into any problems; and if so, how did you resolve them?
Thanks,
mikesLr

Mikeslr, this is exactly the topic (your link) |
|
Mikeslr, this is exactly the topic that teach how to switch the kernels. As a pupil of poor knowledge in Linux, The User Pelo obeyed to each step of the process detailed. And it works. Don't jump anything !
Why 3.0.25, because it is the one that is working for any Lucid, and Dpup too. Wireless then works on my computer. Just to update the browser included in the old puppy, if you really need it, often not necessary.
I did not count how many puppies i changed the kernel this way, more than 100...
I picked up files from Racy 5.3, as explained by the teacher..
Some of our VIPs refuse to learn anything , i gave the information 1000 times in the forum francophone... Wolx is easily renewed by installing 3.0.25, but Medor barks ! Kernel 3.0.66 (Racy 5.5) makes blackscreen on my computer.
My teenpyp is running with Firefox 12.0.. As i don't really need youtube, that is enough for me. As Mikeslr, teenpup is for my pictures editon. Mainly. No need of speed... only patience
What a nice Distro !

by-pass something will be a loose of time |
|
If you run step by step, you should have no problems. The attitude of by-pass something will be a loose of time. Because it will not work
Your feed back (PM) will be appreciated, in the french forum, to get them shamed that my suggestion was easy and efficient (I just translated the English topic, but they seem have believed it was mine)
Francophones topic KDE à commenter en français, s'il vous plait (for my colleagues from France and Outre-mer )

Updating TEENpup's Kernel |
|
Hi Pelo,
Thanks for the feed-back, and again esepecially for the inspiration.
I am currently juggling several projects which must take precedents over my working with TEENpup. I'll PM you when I can devote some attention to it. But I must worn you: it will be some time.
