XenialDog (Ubuntu 16.04 'Xenial Xerus' LTS, 32-bit)

#1 Post by fredx181 »

XenialDog (Ubuntu 16.04 'Xenial Xerus' LTS, 32-bit)
(Ubuntu minimal "live")

XenialDog is a fork of "DebianDog" which is a community project once started by forum member saintless.
See also Here for Debiandog history.
DebianDog full credits: Here

Thread Closed see also here:

=========================================

See for planned fixes and changes on next iso release in second post.

Very similar to DebianDog, but with the difference that it's Ubuntu based, so can be compared best with Mintpup, as Mintpup is based on Ubuntu also.

Full access to Ubuntu repositories by using apt-get (from terminal) or from Synaptic Package Manager (GUI)

Openbox is the main window-manager, the GUI setup is very much like DebianDog64

Differences compared to DebianDog or MintPup:
- Different applications, some are not present and some others added.
- Choices of window-manager are: Openbox and Jwm , see for specifications below.

Login details:
root with password root (default automatic login)
puppy with password puppy

Specifications:
Built from an absolute minimal Ubuntu full install (using mini.iso).
Kernel: 4.4.0-59-generic
Choice of Boot Methods: porteus-boot and casper-boot , see options at the XenialDog Wiki
Default WM - OpenBox (and option for Jwm, see below)
(with different choice of Desktop modes: tint2 icon-panel, cairo-dock or rox-pinboard icons, to choose, run 'Desktop Manager' from Menu)
Tint2 bottom panel or cairo-dock.
(replaced wbar (from previous (32-bit) version) with a minimal cairo-dock
Default File Manager - pcmanfm with option to use rox.
Default Internet Browser - Firefox.
Menu provided by Obmenu-generator (perl script)

Added: Quick-remaster and Upgrade-kernel tools

Option to switch to JWM (Menu > System > Start Jwm)

Full LZ4 squashfs support (compression and loading modules)

Systemd is enabled by default, to use upstart (the older Ubuntu initscripts), do in terminal:

Code: Select all

apt-get update # might be required
apt-get install upstart-sysv
And reboot

The Iso size became quite big mainly because:
- Big size of Ubuntu kernel 4.4.0-59-generic (in /lib/modules)
- Package 'linux-firmware' installed (has most firmware)
- Python and Perl installed

Download: Edit: updated to version 2017-01-22
Iso: XenialDog_32bit-openbox_jwm-2017-01-22-firmware-all.iso Size: 304MB
Md5sum: XenialDog_32bit-openbox_jwm-2017-01-22-firmware-all.md5

DEVX: 61-DEVX-XenialDog32-2017-01-18.squashfs
Locales: 99-locales-XenialDog32-2017-01-18.squashfs

XenialDog custom packages repository: Here

Special thanks to Toni (saintless), William (mcewanw), Terry (sunburnt) and all who helped by giving feedback on the DebianDog and Mintpup threads.

*** Changes, fixes and information planned for new release after 22.01.2017 ***

1.) Bug fix and changed GUI in "Desktop Manager" (desktop mode switcher (Openbox)
In case a pcmanfm window opened, switching to another desktop mode could lead to problems (e.g. overlapping modes),
To fix, install from terminal :

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install xd-desktop-manager
Or install via Synaptic, or install this .deb
https://debiandog.github.io/xenialdog/P ... .0_all.deb
2.) Bug fix for RemasterDog (script to remaster) (copy progress bar didn't show).
To fix, install remaster-scripts version 1.0.2:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install remaster-scripts # will install version 1.0.2
3.) Bugfix for when using encrypted savefile:
If XenialDog is frugally installed and using "porteus-boot":
https://github.com/DebianDog/xenialdog/ ... rteus-boot
Replace initrd1.xz in the "casper" folder with the one from Here and encrypted savefile should work.
4.) Added to quick-remaster option to create ISO, see more here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 454#954454
5.) Fix for xenialdoginstall script, see backi's post here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 687#954687
And reply here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 700#954700
6.) Fix for conky display of external IP, see here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 953#955953
(Attachment: xenialdog-conky-fix.tar.gz)

----------------------------------------------------------

Added new to XenialDog package repository:

- wifibox ,wifi-manager, see more info here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 080#910080
- quick-remaster, do a remaster in less than 10 seconds (LZ4 compressed)
- cairo-dock-minimal (minimal custom package)
- upgrade-kernel upgrade to latest kernel, for frugal install, see more here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 244#930244
- xd-desktop-manager bug-fix package for "Desktop Manager", (see above also)

Added new to XenialDog Extra-Modules (for loading with SFS-load):

EDIT: URL link fixed:
- skype_apulse-xendog.squashfs (Module for Skype using apulse instead of pulseaudio)
https://drive.google.com/uc?export=down ... HJGNGlOOHc

Did a manual frugal install with the following:

Code: Select all

title xz casperDog (sda3) noauto from=/ changes=EXIT:/casper/
root (hd0,2)
kernel (hd0,2)/casper/vmlinuz noauto from=/ changes=EXIT:/casper/
initrd (hd0,2)/casper/initrd1.xz
Everything seems fine so far. Will add to this post if I find or do anything interesting.

Another great job.

Dan

edit:

1. *.desktop file is missing for rox-filer, but it works from terminal.

2. Can't figure out how to put items on desktop. Won't drag and drop like rox. Putting links in /root/Desktop like in Debian Dog doesn't work. No "send to" right click choice like Debian Dog. Am I just missing something simple here?

edit again: Found the desktop manager and switched to rox pinboard, so I know how to put items on desktop now.

NIce. Hopefully Toni will help out on this one too since 32bit, and he can maybe suggest how to cut the size down a bit since we all know he is good at that.EDIT: Just noticed it comes with Python installed (as well as Perl) so that does account to some extent for initial size and it is becoming difficult to avoid Python being installed sooner or later anyway I've found (becoming a common dependency).

I'll certainly give it a run though I'm sticking with DD64 for the most part just now because I'm trying to get used to 64bit system in the sense of the issues that arise when we need to run 32bit software on it sometimes.

Cheers, William

I am of course  downloading now. here a view on my real lubuntu 16.04 64 bit minimal from yesterday and the day before yesterday  (a lot of full installation "warm" my laptop so that the fan runs all the time! lubuntu 16.04 doesn't, exactly like DebianDogJessie64 or LazYUnicorn32; they are for this reason the systems I am really using!)

my full install includes (pls erase the dotdeb's at the end! They have to be dowloaded separately and installed using dpkg :!: . Over that I did add some hunspells in /usr/share/hunspell and link them into ~/.mozilla/seamonkey/nnnnnnnn/extensions !):

Would not smokey01

Yes, download from link in first post, kept failing. However, following many restarts, the .iso file was downloaded successfully. MD5Sum was checked and correct.

Hi oui, Terry H

Added a mirror in first post:
Mirror (from google-drive):
Iso: XenialDog-openbox_jwm-2016-04-30.iso Size: 287MB
Md5sum: XenialDog-openbox_jwm-2016-04-30.md5
Don't know why the download fails for you, for me it works OK using Firefox

@Terry H
I'm curious if you have the same sudo issues with this one as you reported earlier with DebianDog.

@dancytron

Thanks for testing, Dan!
1. *.desktop file is missing for rox-filer, but it works from terminal.
Well, it is in the Menu (System > Rox Filemanager) but not in /usr/share/applications, can't remember why, I put it in /usr/local/share/applications.

@backi
Could not find Wlan connection with Frisbee
You mean you could not connect?
Anyway, Wlan is not found because Network interface names have changed (with newer kernel)
For example wired connection name "eth0" has changed to "ens1"
And wlan0 has changed to something like wlp???

There's a fix to get back to the old interface names:
Add to your kernel boot line (after reboot the change will apply):

Code: Select all

 net.ifnames=0

I beg you please ...where exactly to place this line at the kernel boot line ?

Thanks in advance .

Hi everyone!

Hi backi,
net.ifnames=0

I beg you please ...where exactly to place this line at the kernel boot line ?
I beg YOU please :) to provide some more information, e.g. how you boot xenialdog, from cd , frugal install from USB maybe, then... which bootloader (syslinux, grub4dos, etc...)

Anyway for me using grub4dos it's like this (in directory 'xendog' on hdd sda3) using porteus-boot:

Code: Select all

title XenDog - porteus-boot - save on EXIT changes=EXIT:/xendog/casper
root (hd0,2)
 kernel /xendog/casper/vmlinuz from=/xendog noauto changes=EXIT:/xendog/casper net.ifnames=0
 initrd /xendog/casper/initrd1.xz
Compared to Mintpup using 72 Meg of ram.....

Xenial uses 392 megs of ram on my machine...
Where you got the information from?
Conky, htop, top, free, what?

Yes it's probably more RAM consuming than Mintpup, but that much more?
For me at initial boot conky and htop show around 120MB (this should be minus buffer/cache)
But 'free' shows much less, I'm not sure what's right.

Yes, sure it is, is this the Htop output for you when just booted?
And what does 'free' say for you when just booted?
For me it is:

Code: Select all

root@xenial:~# free
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 3092312 73904 2665328 37288 353080 2944404
Swap: 418812 0 418812
root@xenial:~#
73904 KB is used (74MB), which is very much less as you reported from Htop.

Hello fred .
Booted with savefile .
Htop shows 362 megs ram .

Applied your advice "There's a fix to get back to the old interface names: kernel /xendog/casper/vmlinuz from=/xendog noauto changes=EXIT:/xendog/casper net.ifnames=0 "
Frisbee says now Wlan0 .
Nevertheless can not find networks .

Ok, and what does free (in terminal) show?
Frisbee says now Wlan0 .

Yes, I expected that already, did you try the 'Refresh' or 'Restart Networks' button, or else what's the output of:

Code: Select all

iwlist scan
It can be a "frisbee thing", you could try installing wicd-gtk:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install wicd-gtk
Then in terminal;

Code: Select all

wicd-gtk
And see if that gives you choice of wireless networks.

If that also doesn't work it can be anything, I don't know then.
