Got same problem on Precise 571
In my case, sounds gone after I exit first launch (after installed pet version)
It did sound at first launch, pretty sure I haven't tweak any settings.
and no sounds on sfs version too.

Guess missing libs cause this problem? was gonna ignore since could launch without them...

http://www.smokey01.com/OscarTalks/vlc-2.1.6-wheezy.sfs

Told Missing libs:
libssh2.so.1 is for /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/access/libaccess_sftp_plugin.so
libavc1394.so.0 librom1394.so.0 is for /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/access/libdv1394_plugin.so
libdirac_decoder.so.0 is for /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/codec/libdirac_plugin.so
libx264.so.123 is for /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/codec/libx264_plugin.so
libdirac_decoder.so.0 is for /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/demux/libdirac_plugin.so

Solved
When did I change audio device which is used...? maybe I haven't.
in Menu list -> audio -> audio device, "Discard all samples blah blah" was checked.
check other one, sounds came back.
how the hell this was changed on relaunch...

What version of Puppy are you using?
You installed VLC how?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I looked at my 5.7.1 Menu-> .... could not find any "Audio" or "audio device" so where are you referring to?

Don't delete the thread because somebody coming along later may have exactly the same problem or the posts may lead them to their solution.

sorry to confuse you, Ignore the Menu I wrote, I meant the upper left area (Media Playback Audio ...)
just Audio ->Audio Device.

Xenialpup, audio is working, no image (VLC 2.2.2) Video kill radio star, Puppy will kill videostars !

Solution is easy, change of Puppy ! FFmpeg missing since serie 6.
1600 puppies are still alive, some born outside the forum (illegitime !)
Try Puppies Slacko 5.3.3 or Precise 5.7.1 , keep them ! (Or Slacko 5.7)
Older 4.3.1 should work.
Gxine, old gxine from Puppy 4 should work on your brand new Puppies 64

OK mimimin is referring to the menu inside VLC where the audio device is chosen and if it is set to the wrong device of course you will get no sound .
