On laptops you can usually tell because it makes this atrocious scratching sound every 0.5-1.0 seconds when writing ram to hdd like it's grinding your hdd through a shredder, slicing it apart. It's so jarring that I usually forced the virtual pagefile off in winblows and just let the program that needs to use the ram blow up instead, even when I only had 512MB. Adding a swap file to puppy made me remember this "sound of nitemares" all over again last night when Pale Moon decided to erupt into some kind of infinite loop gulping down my entire 4GB swap in one quick swoop writing to it endlessly for some unhealthy reason...

Hi, Sailor.

Ram wise, you may have better luck with Vivaldi 1.1.
https://vivaldi.com/download/?lang=en_US Get the rpm, not the deb. The deb
archive is there as an ornament. It wouldn't unpack properly, but the rpm did. BFN.

Hi musher0,

Funny, I had the opposite problem, the rpm only added a few folders to /opt and no files at all, but the deb installed all the files (and menu entry) correctly. I then had to type "vivaldi-stable --user-data-dir" from the terminal to get it to run as root. The default theme looks pretty ugly and reminds me of Windows 8/10. :lol: It also doesn't seem to let me resize the window smaller so I can't take a 799-width screenshot. Will play around with more later to see how it does speed and memory wise. Thanks.

Hi Sailor.

rpm vs deb: Oh well... :)

About resizing screen caps: I do it in mtpaint, then it doesn't matter how much room
the original app takes on screen. (But we each have our tricks, don't we?)

BFN.

I thought the new puppies had that container-01x.svg ram indicator? I tried one derivitive with those containers and it didn't function properly.....

I'm still on the "stacked bagels" ram indicator and immediately transfer it to any new offerings.

The bagels start to turn from green to amber, finally red and then one bagel left flashing and you know you're doomed :)

You can hover the mouse over the "bagels" and it says how much free ram is remaining.

Always seemed good to me, only possibility being that it could be more finely graduated with maybe a ten bagels stack.

@Sailor, please understand the context of this post.

In over 3 decades of use of SWAP/PAGE systems, I have never experienced what you suggest occurs when you use such.

Over my years there have been some disk failures NOT ATTRIBUTED to either of those. Disk do break and fail, but in doing so, it is NOT attributed to any actions of SWAP/PAGE. To go a step further, I always set SWAP/PAGE in a partition all their own away from ANY system/user data. This way, I can track or isolate I/O activity.

So, in this post, I am seeking what is "really" occurring. You may share anything helpful for understanding.

Question for everyone
Has anyone else experienced where these subsystems, inherent in almost every OS, have been a source of disk failure as explained? If so please share what you know about these 2 subsystems being a source of disk failures. ... Anyone.

Curious

@Smithy shows us that by hovering over "bagel" you see your PUP's RAM impact. My PUP shows below. My measurements show the impact of my running @ETP's DLNAPUP use of RAM expansion techniques for system's benefit.

I've never seen green bagels before, is that telling you that your computer is going stale?

Hi kiramm,

You really should open a separate thread for your queries on GIMP

One thread per topic please, it helps everyone in finding the right thread for questions and solutions

Hi kiramm.

Nothing works like you want on your Puppy, eh? :lol:

I CANNOT solve all your miseries, but here's my script for htop. I have been using
it for years, so I know it works. And htop has a RAM indicator, so it's on topic.

~~~~~~~~
Check in /lib or /usr/lib if you have a library called "libncursesw.so.5". It's needed
by htop itself, not for this script; if you don't have it on your Puppy, and only
if you don't have it on your Puppy, htop will not work without it.
~~~~~~~~

As "shadow_of-viper" says, you should start a new thread for each of your
questions and / or problems. Otherwise, your chances of getting a solution are
next to none. For example, nobody will read this thread if they are interested
in GIMP, because the main subject of this thread is "RAM indicator".

I am not a graphic artist, not even a "Sunday painter", so I know nothing about
GIMP. For GIMP, perhaps send a private message (PM) to member "starhawk":
he published a Puppy called "Vincent Van Pup", a specialist Puppy for artists. He
is a very friendly man. He should be able to guide you to an answer if he does
not know the answer himself.

I hope this helps. Good luck. BFN.
