I've only ever gotten Unetbootin to work on Windows.

Tried to boot Linux Lite the other day. Unetbootin would not see the flash drive -- or any flash drive, for that matter. This is the typical behavior for me to see, across several different systems and a few different Pups.

Once I forced Unetbootin (from Terminal, at that! It's in their FAQ...) to use the intended flash drive -- even then, the install would not boot. Unetbootin uses syslinux and leaves out some files that Ubuntu based distros need in order to be booted with that.

I gave up and used ISOBooter, worked instantly without issue, problem, or complaint.

Take rcrsn51's advice.

Unetbootin has worked for me to install Puppy versions to a USB flash drive.
I am booting with one now.

In fact, I just used it to make a Gparted Live USB.
I ran Unetbootin in a running Puppy.

It does only want to install to a USB flash that is formatted fat32.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I remember that SFR had success in slacko 5.3.3 which had usb mounting by uuid support. Puppy has not usb by uuid mounting support which is needed to get the unetbootin menu disposable.

I figured that out.

Didn't help any.

The flash drive solution is very slow. I prefer a partition in an usb hd. Is persistence possible by isobooter? Have you tried?

I have packaged from slacko 5.3.3 usb_id. It works in slacko 6.3.0. I attach it. Install and reboot. Than try to attach the usb drive, mount it and simply launch:

Code: Select all

unetbootin
It autodetects the attached usb drive. Report your testing.

Puppy Tweaks for installing a Puppy iso:

Unetbootin does a basic iso image burn install to a USB flash drive.
Basically it is the same as a live CD image burn install.
It does not know about the tweaks, that the Puppy Universal Installer does, to identify the install as a USB flash drive install.
These tweaks tell the boot process that Puppy is on a USB flash drive and to limit the writes to the save file or folder.

However you can manually tweak the syslinux.cfg file on the USB flash drive.

Change:

Code: Select all

 append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=cd
To:

Code: Select all

append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash
I notice that it also puts an isolinux.cfg on the usb drive. What is the difference between these two configuration files?

isolinux.cfg is the same of the iso file which unetbootin copy to the the usb stick. I think only syslinux.cfg is used by unetbootin.

isolinux.cfg is used to boot a live Puppy CD/DVD.
It is in the Puppy iso file for burning a live Puppy CD/DVD.

Unetbootin copies everything from the iso file even stuff not needed for a USB install.
Unnetbootin installs the syslinux boot loader, which is needed to boot from USB flash drive.

It contains mtools and p7zip all in one. It seems to work in a live of slacko 5.7, precise 5.7.1, tahr 6.02 (and obviously wary). It has not a menu entry: open a console and type:

Code: Select all

unetbootin installtype=USB targetdrive=/dev/sdxy
where sdxy is the usb stick where you want to install to an iso.
The listed web site says it's "down for maintenance".

Ed: Just followed some links and copy.com is gone for good.

Does anyone have a copy of this unetbootin-608-w5.pet file?

Thanks

New unetbootin-625-x86.pet available built with mtools 4.0.18 and p7zip 15.14.1. It works for me. Report your testing:

For 64 bit puppies consider unetbootin-linux64-613.pet:

Building version 625 of unetbootin throws in console a warning about libicui which I was not able to solve.

Unetbootin -- getting beyond /root

#34 Post by mikeslr »

Hi all,

I don't need unetbootin to get Puppies or debiandogs onto a USB-stick. But, until now to do a easy and quick --well not so quick-- burn of another Distro I've been booting into Windows and running LinuxLIveUSB Creator,

Now I no longer have to. :D

I just built an SFS for Tahrpup64. Worked fine burning pclinuxos to a USB-stick with one wrinkle. The part of Unetbootin's GUI for selecting an already downloaded ISO couldn't get passed /root. The option "computer" was greyed-out.

Easy work-around. Just symlink /mnt to /root. Thought I'd mention it if any one else hasn't.

Two other things to keep in mind. Unetbootin requires that the USB-stick already be formatted as Fat32. And, although it will remind you if you forget --in contradiction to my previous experience working with USB-stick burning software-- the USB-Stick must also be mounted.

I have not the warning about icui18n launching later versions of unetbootin extracted from the deb packages at:

I didn't get that warning from an SFS I build in Xenialpup64 just using its PPM --download all dependencies-- and PaDs (in the later using the unrpm-all.pet on the PaDS thread). But, as previously noted, a symlink from /root was necessary to access the folder holding the ISO.

The warning about icui is thrown out using the binaries files from the main unetbootin site. The ubuntu unetbootin PPA rep has more recent versions of unetbootin.

I tried to install upupBB this way while working with my tiny_puduan. I got no errors but I don't see a syslinux.cfg. DOes the syslinux.cfg need to be included in the iso for this to work? Are there any syslinux packages that I need to make sure are installed prior to using Unetbootin.

BTW, I got more errors when I tried this in dpup buster.

Could it be this?
USB Drive install mode

For the Live USB creation mode, UNetbootin generates an appropriate syslinux config file in /syslinux.cfg, and makes your USB drive bootable using syslinux. On Linux, if extlinux is installed and the target USB drive is ext2 or ext3, extlinux is used instead; the config file is installed in /extlinux.conf. The partition to which it has been installed is also marked as active.
