PostPosted: Thu 26 May 2016, 06:45    Post subject:  Unable to get Virtualbox Guest Additions working in Puppy.

I am running Precise Puppy 5.4.1 as host(frugal install onto HDD, D: drive ) and Windows XP SP3 ( C: drive) as guest. Virtualbox v. 4.12 . Virtualbox Extensions pack(downloaded from Virtualbox website) for the same was installed via File>Preferences>Extensions . However after booting into XP, Guest Additions does not show up in the explorer as a virtual drive. If I try to install it from the menu it shows an error and offers to download from the internet. Can someone please help me out?

Not sure this is any help. I run puppy precise 5.7.1 full install.

After starting virtualbox 4.30, in my Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager window I can highlite my windows virtual machine and look at settings-->storage and it shows the storage tree where the vboxguestadditions.iso is listed.

When running my WinXP virtual machine, VBOXADDITIONS_4. is available in "My Computer" of the running WinXP virtual machine as drive D:

In my puppy install, the virtualboxguestadditions.iso is physically located in the /opt/VirtualBox/additions/ directory of my puppy. It is 61.2MB in size.

Maybe your .iso file of the additions is corrupt?
Have you seen this forum thread?

Not much help, I know, but at least its a reply.

If you need the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso

Are you rinning VirtualBox version 4.1.12?

If needed, the .iso is available from ubuntu (this is for VBox in precise versions >= 4.1.44, so may or may not work in your version. I found it listed in the puppy package manager. Also, should be listed in your puppy package manager.

This page has info--> http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso

This page has the list of files in the .deb package-->http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/all/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/filelist

This is the download-->http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/v/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso_4.1.44-1ubuntu1.12.04.1_all.deb

The puppy package manager should install the deb package when you click on the package using Rox filer. Notice in the list of files link that it shows where the files get extracted to. You may have to move the .iso to your /VirtualBox/additions/ directory, don't know for certain where your VBox install is located on your machine...

Thats about all the help I can provide for now without knowing more from you. Good luck!

This is the virtualboxguestadditions .iso specifically for VBox version 4.1.12

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/100438827/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso_4.1.12-1_all.deb

The 4.1.44 version I listed in the previous post is supposed to work in VBox version 4.1.12, however, this 4.1.12 version .iso is the correct proper .iso released for VBox 4.1.12.

The 4.1.12 .iso is older. May or may not be a better .iso for VBox 4.1.12 (4.1.44 may have bug fixes, etc.)

So the Virtualbox Extensions pack is of no use? One has to compulsorily get Virtualbox Guest Additions iso for Puppy? This will further bloat my install. Oh well. Cant have the cake and eat it too! Thanks so much for taking to the time to help me out. I shall get back in a little while.
Edit: Got it working after downloading Guest Additions iso. Thanks all.

You get the extension pack for the guest OS not the host. Although you must me running the correct hardware drivers for the host anyway.
VirtualBox communicates with a set of stubs that appear the same to it whatever machine it is run on. It is then up to the machine's own OS to convert those into real I/O
