Problems with mplayer in Tahrpup 6

#1 Post by rkonrad »

For my video files, vlc works fine but I would prefer to use mplayer. This is the message I get when I try mplayer:

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

This is a new installation. Otherwise TahrPup is great!

hi rkonrad,

open the PPM and type vdpau into the find box, and install libvdpau-va-gl1 and dependencies.

then in a terminal

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/lib/vdpau/libvdpau_va_gl.so.1 /usr/lib/vdpau/libvdpau_i915.so
hopefully vdpau will then work

it may also make streaming youtube etc better

mplayer

Thanks. I actually installed mplayer2 (don't know the difference). When I went back to puppy package manager I found just "mplayer" and now it works fine. Should I still download that dependency? I don't want to fix something that isn't broken yet if it helps my streaming videos - sure.

it won't hurt to install it .... and may fix your youtube woes

remember to run the command after you've installed

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/lib/vdpau/libvdpau_va_gl.so.1 /usr/lib/vdpau/libvdpau_i915.so

Ogle can give you a chance, if Mplayer available, but gnome-mplayer wrongly installed (here Puppy Jessie, beautiful Puppy Linux, for South America)

MPlayer is best for Linux as far as sound is concerned, the equalizer is quite powerful. Did you try Xmplay with Wine for playing your music?

there are some alternatives to mplayer

#9 Post by Pelo »

yes i will do it. there are some alternatives to mplayer. But so many apps are based on it that Puppy without mplayer is without fun. Puppy builders do as they were there for there own pleasure only and have no respect of people. Better than asking passengers to repair Airline equipment, change airline, boycott Tahrpup, Puppy Precise will still give you lot of choices, and nice pets for your amusement.
They don't care about us, just training themself to linuxing, like people do crosswords. They don't even play a CD and a DVD before releasing their puplets in the forum.

I haven't used CDs or a CD player since 2007, but am a huge fan of music. Got a 40GB partition just for mp3s of all kinds, and tons of midi files, sid files, etc. If the CD player didn't work on a puppy, I would have no way to know (I never liked how you could hear the CD spinning while using them anyway)... I do have a lot of programs that use mplayer as a backend also though.

Just burn all your CDs to mp3 and get it over with, they can probably all fit on a 32GB flash drive.

children are used to watch a DVD in their bed

For birthday, A CD is stiil a good idea. I don't buy CDs, excepted for gifts.
DVDs : children are used to watch a DVD in their bed, with their laptop.
Billions children does not yet study Linux scripts on their laptops before sleeping
Puppy Linux is ignoring the world for a dozen of linux students :!: the worse is that they did not answer anymore to people

Hi Sailor.

Ha! And fill up 32 Gigs of your drive that you could use for something else!!!
You remember that CD's and DVD's are themselves storage media, don't you? ;)
Or are you that young?

Sailor Enceladus , don't be offensed, we need music lovers here.
I rarely use CDs too, But we must fight to keep up to date our applications.
I am furious when working system FFmpeg disappear to be prefered by new but buggy ones..
Children still uses CDs, or DVDs a lot, they don't use Puppy ! (daddy is always checking something in the family distro). Puppy and pet are generally for children, but not here :!:

Whilst on the subject of Mplayer. Does anyone have a simple solution to the problem of resuming the playlist from the same position when restarting?

Gnome-Mplayer, our multimedia player for Puppy Linux, is the best ! i agree.
I start My Puppy Jessie in RAM, to check again Pmusic..
nicoo7, i will try Xmplay, but running windows apps with Wine is not my cup of tea, i will try XMplay with my Windows 7, waiting for some jobs to do.

True. Tonight, for the first time ever, I tried playing both audio CDs and DVDs in Puppy (Slacko 6.3.0.6 32-bit) on a laptop that had a DVD player, and was happy to see that both the audio CDs and DVDs worked great. When I inserted the CDs, a "sr0" cd icon appeared on desktop, and clicking on it opened the album or movie automatically. I had no clue if either would work at all, but ended up watching all of Pineapple Express from DVD in GNOME mplayer and am quite satisfied with the experience. 10/10
