SMplayer is a GUI for Mplayer, and works fine with classical Puppies.
But with Tahrpup, that is different ... Tahrpup and sons, i mean.

But pelo does not succeed to change chapters,

#30 Post by Pelo »

Pelo is an idiot, perhaps. Nobody asked how to activate chapters.
préférences give shortcuts to be used. But pelo does not succeed to change chapters, even to read the DVD.
Install SMplayer is easy, please explain us why shortcuts don't work as they should. Unless explain that to me, with a PM eventually, perhaps i am the only one to fail, it's a shame.
Burn DVDs is explained everywhere, dozen of topics. But how to read a DVD is omitted. Perhaps we should keep it secret..
I Installed VLC and it works. Billtoo told us VLC is the best,
Trash SMplayer ? perhaps i am only a silly user.

Umplayer reads chapters if norgo could make a pet of that for you?

Edit: In Umplayer and Smplayer you have to choose you DVD drive in Preferences, then it will read the DVD and support chapters.

SMplayer DVD playing and chapters

#32 Post by norgo »

If you want to play Movie DVD's make sure that:

libdvdread
libdvdnav
libdvdcss ( dependent on DVD, needed in case of encrypted DVD's )

are installed at your system.
Of course SMplayer is also able to read chapters.

Furthermore shortcut's are already defined by default.

Next chapter = @
Previous chapter = !

Both are working flawless.

Btw. Mplayer in combination with SMplayer front end is one of the best multimedia player I know.

I will feed back soon

#35 Post by Pelo »

I will feed back as soon as a Puppy with Smplayer in my computer. I am with fluxpup and i would finish to upload some of my videos on you tube.
What is an evidence is that i completely don't care of the name of the media player and its age if it simply runs DVDs (usual DVDs, with movies for children, or for me)
Some of screenshots show movies running, but they are files, not from the DVD.
SMplayer, Umplayer and VLC usually do the job.

SMplayer 16.8.0

#37 Post by Hesse James »

Hi Norgo
It looks like you are the expert concerning SMplayer. Some years before I also had a look into SMplayer but I lost all interests on SMplayer because it was not able to show DVB-S2 channels.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=93115
Did that change within the last two years ?
I assumed these days it is the frontend SMplayer not mplayer which is responsible for that. Mplayer as standalone program could show DVB-S2 channels.

By the way, I tried VLC as an alternative because VLC is able to show DVB-S2 channels but I didn't manage to change the TV-channels. I tried TVheadend with VLC but this didn't work properly (TVheadend didn't store my settings). So I deleted VLC. Actually I use my good old WindowsXP to watch TV.

Looking forward to an answer of you.
Christian

DVB-S2

#38 Post by norgo »

Hello Christian,

would like to help you but I've only small knowledge about DVB- C/T/S devices and how they are working.
Also I don't own such a device for tests, sorry.
SMplayer is looking after each start in ~/.mplayer/channels.conf for new entries.
If you've a valid channels.conf file SMplayer will show these entries under menu open->TV.
There you can select a desired TV channel.
I don't know whether SMplayer can handle with dvb-s2 entries.
It's worth to try this out.
SMplayer changelog doesn't show any changes of dvb stuff in recent times.
If your desired feature is missing
maybe it's a good idea to tell the developer your wishes ? https://sourceforge.net/p/smplayer/feature-requests/
It's a pity that I couldn't help you along.

Best regards
Norgo
