I'm not sure if you can load a sfs when running a full install. I know earlier versions couldn't.

If this is still the case then extract the sfs to a directory and make a pet of that directory. EG: dir2pet DirName

I made the pet but had to make some guesses during it's creation.

VLC still won't show video nor does this work anymore.

Code: Select all

vlc --play-and-exit /usr/share/audio/doorbell-1.wav
Thanks,
Andy

The extracted files (USR) are in Storage.

Do I use dir2pet USR or dir2pet Storage ?

I work in aged care and I have to say your mad ravings out do anything extreme I have heard or seen there. There is remastering tools in Puppyland to create your own spins so stop bleating and polluting threads and build your own setup. There enough Mplayer .pets around you can install so have a search and get off your butt do something constructive.

no version of puppy is useless for dvds and cds.

any version of puppy can be used to play dvds and cds.

some versions will work out of the box, but it also depends on what computer you run it on.

with the puppy forum, probably any version of puppy can be made to play dvds and cds-- but you may need to download and install a pet-- anyone can do that if their internet connection is working.

VLC in Xenialpup seems to be garbled

#53 Post by Pelo »

VLC in Xenialpup seems to be garbled, version has been changed in Xenialpup 7.0.2. To be verified, within a few minutes.
With the same DVD, check of three Puppies
But main programs should have been checked before releasing the Puppy. Some people as me try to repair, but most of new-comers will leave. My goal is to get them back, but we need quality, not 'made in China'. Puplets usually check the bugs and corrective actions are taken. Use puplets, done by puppy lovers !

VLC in Xenialpup 7.0.1 : no trouble playing DVDs, fail to read video avi. I add vdpau.. vdpau-va-driver_0.7.3 from the PPM
. feedback coming..

im not sure thats the best way-- fine if it works, adding vdpau support (looks like the new version of xenial is missing an .so file, or the vlc package needs it added) is probably better than switching to x11.

the reason is that x11 will probably give terrible performance, but vdpau seems to be gl-based.

as a bonus, adding the vdpau library is easier for users, because they dont have to fiddle with settings (just get the newer vlc pet.) grandpa would approve.

As learnhow2code wrote, x11 will work but will give terrible performance especially with a high resolution and frame rate video.

i think its a fine solution for "all you have to do is click this and it works again" but it wont do, a lot of the time for many users. in a pinch, it will-- but it seems like providing the vdpau libs would help more as far as fixing up the latest puppy is concerned.

im curious why vdpau was available in the previous xenial (or is this the vlc packaging?) but not this one.

that seems to be the core of the issue (and we can thank pelo for finding it with his screencap but its the only detail about this weve got, unless theres something peculiar about pelos setup... has anyone else complained about vlc? is this a zebra or horse we are dealing with?

learnhow2code , i fully agree with you. things should work without having to use 'mode dégradé'
People should get applications in the menu working without having to change anything..

jlst

It didn't work for me in some old hardware in a "borderline situation" with vesa driver. mplayer did work but the mplayer window would disappear if the focus changed to other window.

Then I tested mpv, it proved to be the best player for linux, no need to configure video output, no need to worry about issues. It will just play the videos with any video output available.

When I was a Windows user I always used K-lite Codec Pack, which came with everything i needed. Never understood the VLC hype.
