Install Puppy 2.13 With No GUI? Maybe.

#1 Post by TheSquire »

I am trying to generate a version of Puppy 2.13 without any GUI applications and, ideally, without X at all. The goal is to minimize the OS image size on the hard disk and since I have no need for any GUI...

I do need the updated kernel modules in Puppy 2.13, though (especially usbserial and ftdi_sio), so it seems I cannot use Puppy 2.01 OneBone.

Using Puppy 2.13 and puppy unleashed, I've managed to create a boot CD which works! My ISO file is about 40 MB, which seems a good improvement (though I hope to achieve even more savings in a few more tries.)

But now, how do I install my new Puppy to a hard disk?

The puppyinstaller script in /usr/sbin seems to rely on X.

Is there a text-only console-based installer?

Or maybe someone can point to a step-by-step procedure for this?

Edit: Lots of folks read this topic, but no replies yet. So I guess I'll give it a go myself...

On another forum, I found some instructions - and a script - that pertain to a different distro, but still might be useful with Puppy.

I suspect this script will have to be modified to apply to Puppy, but it's a place to start. If I make any progress, I will report it here.

Peace.
