- PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.

If you have lost partition or strange problem with your hard disk partitions, run TestDisk to recover your data. TestDisk detects numerous filesystem including NTFS, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, ext2, ext3, ext4, btrfs, BeFS, CramFS, HFS, JFS, Linux Raid, Linux Swap, LVM, LVM2, NSS, ReiserFS, UFS, XFS.

TestDisk & PhotoRec are portable applications, extract the files and the applications are ready to be used. No need to run an installer.

They will need to be run in a terminal.

The downloaded package will be testdisk-7.0-WIP.linux26.tar.bz2 that has both programs in it.
Open with Xarchive, select all, and select extract.
This will put all the contents in a named directory (testdisk-7.0-WIP).
Open the directory in Rox file manager.

To run test disk
right click on testdisk_static and select run in terminal.

To run Photorec
Right click on photorec_static and select run in terminal.

This directory (testdisk-7.0-WIP) has program info files and a link to the online documentation.

Following your instructions...

1. From HERE...
Downloaded to [the mounted only/single partition on] a 1GB Flash Drive with space to spare, as follows:
/mnt/sdb1/Puppy/pet/Testdisk&Photorec-7.0/testdisk-7.0.linux26.tar.bz2

2. Right-clicked the file in Xfe, chose "Open with..." Xarchive...
All the file contents were displayed...

3. Clicked "Select all..." [all files were highlighted], then clicked "Extract" ...

4. I was asked if I wanted to place the extracted files in a sub-folder named "testdisk-7.0", and I agreed.
The folders&files were extracted to:
/mnt/sdb1/Puppy/pet/Testdisk&Photorec-7.0/testdisk-7.0

5. Tried using ROX to right-click on the file = "photorec_static", but there was no right-click-context-menu-item = "run in terminal"...
Nor any other "run" option that I could see.

6. What am I doing wrong?

Is it possible to undelete photos on an android phones internal memory?

When I ran MTP and mounted the phone Photorec did not see the phone filesystem.

That is likely because TESTDISK runs directly against the device and will not support accessing storage via a driver.

Does that mean it might work if I don't mount it with MTP?

It means that if you can give testdisk direct access to the (I presume) memory card in the phone, it might work.
Don't forget you are talking about nand (or whatever) memory and that is different to the type of storage that TESTDISK was designed to handle. That sort of memory tends to work in blocks not individual bytes.

If you can remove the memory card and access it in a USB card reader it might? work.
I haven't tried it so I don't know, and I am not going to risk ruining on of my cards trying for the sake of it.

It seems pretty complicated and the phone needs rooting which is the same for the android.

It's not my phone so I don't want to risk bricking it.
