No recognition of Realtek RTL8191S WLAN adapter

#301 Post by ETP »

Hi Dennis,

The output from dmesg on the working Tahr Pup shows that the rtl8712u.bin firmware is
required. That is included BarryK's pet which I linked to above.
At this stage you have nothing to lose, so I suggest that you install that pet, reboot and
see whether you are then able to configure your wireless dongle.
Regards ETP

ETP Thanks for the help,I used the pet and rebooted and the R8712u showed up. When I installed it questioned whether it would work with WAP I ticked to install and all was well. I realised that the first time I tried the pet I had not saved the session when I rebooted.
This is the first time in the 10 years or more that I have been using puppy that I have done a Frugal install as in the past I had always done full installs and so the Save bit was overlooked.
My excuse is my birthdate in 1941 when there were not a lot of modules and network wizards etc.
Incidentally I inadvertently did the netmodule update in Tahr 6.0.2 and it did the same to my Connect icon as it did to Slavvo67 and it now does not work.
Thanks again for the help. Regards Dennis.

Further to the above. I have decided that Quirky is not my cup of tea. I got the connection but anything I tried turned to C***p and I for the life of me cannot get the advantage of Frugal install, Start up is ok but if I save the session it seems to take forever to shut down.I guess that in my case you cant teach an old dog new tricks. Also now my network wizard is not cooperating since I did the updatenetmodule on Tahrpup by mistake.
Woe is me but thanks anyway. Regards Dennis.

Quirky Xerus for _32 computers, please

#304 Post by gschl »

All my three PCs are 32-bit - I would appreciate an updated Puppy for these - or have you stopped updating for 32-bit PCs
thanks

Congrats & thanks for this milestone. Notwithstanding, unconvinced that world+dog should phase out use of .iso and CD/DVD. Worldwide it's the most popular, most flexible and available media option that just isn't going anywhere soon. Vast HW collections exist and reusable CD/DVD-RW are cheaper, more reliable. No harm in porting to USB sticks/SD but these only apply to newer, esp. cheap portable equipment with BIOS/UEFI/SB compatibility but too early to assess the rewrite ability/lifetime of flash media.

.iso? - keep 'em coming.

Later: long list of addresses after Call Trace - dump stack, panic do_exit, SyS_exit, entry_SYSCALL_64_fastpath,
then - Kernel Offset:disabled
end Kernel panic - not syncing, etc, etc.

No idea what it means.

iso to usb,
dd if=xerus64-8.1.5.iso of=/dev/sdd

alternate method
unxz --stdout xerus64-8.1.5-8gb.img.xz | dd of=/dev/sdd bs=4M

always same results as Kernel panic... what's the mistake?

md5sums OK.

Quirky Xerus 8.1.5 for x86_64, released Dec. 25, 2016

#312 Post by Billtoo »

I used the alternative install method from my Fatdog64-710 install and
installed to a 64GB flash drive.

I downloaded these files from nluug:
xerus64-8.1.5.usfs.xz
4install-quirky-to-partition.gz
alternative-readme.htm

The first try erred out but I installed the missing files with gslapt
and reran the install script.

I have disconnected my USB and my SATA drives booted up - same problem.

My guess is, that the 'intel core 2 Duo' is not supported.

Quirky Werewolf 64-bit 7.4 is built with 'intel core 2 Duo' support.

I have AMD64 and also kernel panic, so I don't think intel or amd is the problem.

Time for Billtoo to do what most of us regular folks do! Come on Bill, d/l the .iso and try to run it on a single core 64bit machine....

Also got a kernel panic from both ISO and install to drive. Something important is missing. One clue is that it reported "unable to find any hardware clock" on one machine. This is likely a problem with the x86 SMB. There's a great deal more information, but I think the reports above should be enough to diagnose the problem.

At the moment I'm perplexed about BillToo's success, particularly when he says he used gslapt to install missing files.

At the moment I'm unable to run install to partition on my test flash drive because my machine can't find a partition on that drive.

I'll post again after another experiment.

That method has already been proven to not work so why would I try that?

Try the method that did work for me :)

@ BarryK

You will not like it but it seems to be kernel related.

I have downloaded the xerus64-8.00.iso version and this one works.

Just posting of it.

Regards,
Feodor

Some time Later:

There is nothing wrong with the 4.8.8 kernel. After a 'Full Install' of the xerus64-8.0.iso to my sda2 partition and the bumping up to xerus64-8.15 version via the service-pack everything looks good!

The implementation of the 'LlibreOffice' pack was a brilliant idea.

OK, I've got past the problem of recognizing the flash drive, and here's what I found on the 8 GB drive resulting from the install_to_drive script. (I'm using a clean boot of Fatdog 710 to investigate the problem, to avoid complications from my modifications.)

There are two partitions, here sdg1 and sdg2. It looks to me like the problem is with the append in the syslinux.cfg intended to mount the second partition as system root.

At this point it looks like the files are there, but not being mounted and recognized. I'm guessing one big problem is with missing kernel modules.

There is a problem in checking md5sums or sha1sums, since only the defective ISO file has a checksum.

If Billtoo can tell me what missing files he replaced, I'll try to fix that. This release actually looks pretty close to working, even from the problematic installations.

Added: whoops! I found that partition with all the file system was left over from a previous Quirky installation I did on the drive. It includes files which should have been replaced in this version. This would have been easier to spot if the systems had not been so similar.

There's a problem with the install script.

Hi again Sage,

I moved my SDHC card install to my Athlon single core laptop, it was
installed using the method I described for the hp desktop.
Seems to be working okay.
