I'm aware of the script to automatically download and install/setup LibreOffice on your system (I have it in the menu on my Precise setup), but is there something similar for OpenOffice?

portable openoffice?
I don't know.
But another idea.
I am on tahr and wary and I use LibreOffice as 'portable'. I just extract the deb from the LibreOffice download site in my /mnt/home and run it.
I copy the .destop files to /usr/share/applications/ and change the exec-line.
Maybe it works for OpenOffice too?

I think I remember someone not having much luck with that method, at one point. But I'd still rather have the script handle it than mess with .deb files, again. I've spent too much time messing with them in the past, so if I can avoid doing that, all the better.

There is a small or portable Open Office floating around somewhere on this message board. You may want to search it out. If I recall, it was a bit older but still was quite solid.
Libre is kind of big and bulky but still a huge improvement over the old ABI Word that was the default (crash) word (crash crash) processor (crash crash crash)....

Any specific reason for an older version, though? (Just curious.) I'm currently using one of the v5 releases of LibreOffice, so I shouldn't have any problems running a recent version of OpenOffice.Semme wrote:Try the 3.2 version here. I recall rufwoof giving it a thumbs up!

Well, my thought is that older is generally lighter. Comparing apples and oranges, maybe but Firefox is a perfect example. It has at least doubled in size over the past 5 years or so.
I had the impression that you were looking for a stable word processor without the bulk of Libre. Besides, newer is usually just jammed with features most people seldom use, anyway....

I think I've seen at least one editor that had support for ODT/ODF files, but was only a plain-text/ASCII editor like Geany...Mostly just personal preference, really. Though, Libre's attempts to look, feel and do some things differently do sometimes lead to munging some of the features (like making it rather difficult to insert a horizontal rule, for example).Can I ask why your preference to Open Office?
If it comes down to it, I'll just continue using LibreOffice.

After uploading scripts and explaining, I realized that older Puppies like 5.2.5 have different bash or other programs that will not use the same command options that my script uses.
A much easier solution was for me to package the Apache Open Office.
So, below are 2 links. The first is the Open Office 4.1.3 (latest) 32bit packaged as a pet and tested in Puppy 5.2.5. Should work in most old Puppies.
The 2nd link is for the Open Office Menu Items. They are touch and go and may not still appear. However, after installing this you can simply type openoffice4 from terminal and Open Office comes right up. You can also go to usr/share/applications and drag the appropriate desktop icon onto your desktop. These came over a bit messy. Maybe when I have time I'll pretty it up. For now, at least Open Office 4.1.3 should be running.

Would it be easier (or better) to package it as an SFS, like 01micko's script/app (which my Precise is probably using) does?
Come to think of it, I should probably ask him if the script/app could be modified to go after OpenOffice, too.
