Thanks for the add'l info, ttuuxxx. Compiled on this Stretch is excellent.

How about the mpv that's provided? Is this program a joke -- or is it me?
It has no manual, or at least dillo jams when I type < man mpv >.

You type

Code: Select all

mpv /dev/sr1
and it shows the logo of the movie company and exits.

What's the general experience and / or consensus on mpv?
Does it have any front-ends?

TIA for any insights.

My Wheezy VLC is in http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks but I haven't tried it in Stretch. I compiled MPlayer with GUI and that was fairly simple, latest snapshot from svn is always better than latest release.
MPV opens as a "GUI" window from the menu entry if you edit the .desktop file

Thanks for your effort, belham2. I'm eager to have a look at it.

To bring it down under 300 Mb's is simple: do not include any major web
browser in your build!

The browser scene now is much diversified and people have their
preferred browser: Vivaldi, Chromium, Firefox, Light, Seamonkey. Include
Seamonkey and you make the Vivaldi fans unhappy. See what I mean?

The solution to to make the slew of them available separately as sfs's.

MPV GUI a basic overlay on the video playing you can search and stop,pause and play and that's about it. Once we get the compiler working better I'll work out something better.

Thank you kindly, OscarTalks.

I have used your vls sfs Wheezy build successfully in this Dpup Stretch-7.

I tried launching mpv from the desktop file as you suggested and what
shows up is drop-files window.

This is still too experimental for my taste. I think I'll remove mpv from
my StretchPup.

Thanks.

Edit 1: dillo can't read it and cancels my bmpanel2 bar every time it loads.
Which means it's going to be links2 for me, and bye-bye dillo.

Edit 2: installed links2 and even it can't read the mpv man you provided.
So bye-bye mpv.

BTW, I'm more and more convinced that nowadays, the way to include
those big apps in a Puppy is either to present them individually as sfs's or
to bundle them in an adrv.

People's preferences are too diversified nowadays for us to include, say,
a big default video player or a big default browser.

IMO, it is ok to include small progs like Sound Exchange (aka SoX) or
links2 to get people started and to show we know our stuff. But not the
big fellas. My 2¢ worth.

But thanks anyway for the effort, Billtoo.

Ok, Musher, makes sense. I was just trying to include a browser because that Dillo drives me bananas and I hate it something awful, lol.

I can barely hold my eyes open, going to have to try again tomorrow evening....the good thing is it booted up, and all icon changes were corrected (save for the "gdmap graphical disk usage' which for some reason doesn't want to hold the changes I give to it), also the .jwmrc-tray icons (firewall, retrovol, network connection, freemapapplet, and xload (after you set dpup up with Puppy Setup) all appeared nice and orderly in the top main .jwmrc-tray. And the 2nd Apple-like bottom, centered .jwmrc-tray2 appeared, and held the changes of holding the many apps along with the functioning trash icon and savefile icon (which becomes "active" after you set up the savefile) included. I wanted those two icons off the desktop and put into the 2nd tray, so it worked.

So I'll try another ISO run tomorrow evening, and maybe either include ttuuxxx's linked gnome-player or Oscar's mplayer with GUI (that sounds interesting if the GUI comes up with a simple .desktop modification) included.

Thanks again to you all. I'd be getting nowhere fast without all you guys and your hints and tips. I've never even set up a ftp download before, so I gotta figure out how to do that properly on what Smokey01 just gave me the other day (billtoo, I hope you don't mind if I PM ya if I get lost setting up on smokey01.com tomorrow)

Thanks for the thanks.

It's always a pleasure trying to build a Puppy, and in so doing, possibly
offering the general public an alternative to WhineDose's monopoly!

Also you're a pleasant guy to work with, belham2! :D

from Dpup Stretch's PPM.

Hello all.

I just received this private communication from someone who wishes to
remain anonymous:
Hi musher0,

For contributions to the Puppy Newsletter, of course it would *really* be
nice if we could continue to use Notecase, since any alternative means
having to install a new app.

However, for personal notetaking use, you may be interested to know
that I am finding the free version of Notecase Pro to be more than
satisfactory. It lacks all the capabilities of the full, paid version, but as far
as I can tell it still does everything that the old Notecase 1.9.8 does. I
have a large Notecase file filled with (...), and with Notecase Pro "free"
I was able to pick up right where I left off with no problems.

The only downsides I have noticed are
1) at startup, you get the typical nag dialog urging you to buy the full
version, and
2) you apparently can't save to the old ".ncd" format; instead, the free
version of Notecase Pro only saves to an ".ncz" format.

If these are not show-stoppers, I can heartily recommend you give the
free version of Notecase Pro a try.

Regards,
I thought this Puppyist's message contained valuable information for
those who wish to continue using notecase as an outliner.

Hello all.

Thanks for your trouble ttuuxxx, but I still get this error at launch, even if
I specify the C as the LANG variable. This is a big concession on my part,
since, as you may already know, having to specify LANG=C is an
hindrance for anyone whose language is not English.

Code: Select all

LANG=C;./notecase

(process:6307): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
	Using the fallback 'C' locale.
As well, with your compilation, I can create some nodes, but I cannot
write anything in them. Same thing when I re-compiled it myself.

I would vote for not investing any more energy in forcing this old
notecase to do what it doesn't want to do anymore. Maybe it just wants
to retire... ;)

As to using the free version of the new notecasePro, as the anonymous
Puppyist suggested, I tried to get the deb archive of it to work, and IMO it
requires too many add'l libraries to be practical in our Puppy context.

~~~~~~~~~~~
That said, the problem may not be as desperate as it looks regarding the
Puppy Linux newsletter.
Here is an explanation from the notecase Pro site at
http://www.notecasepro.com/help/help_fi ... GB9vQ.html
NCD Format
The .ncd format is written in a subset of the W3C HTML 4 Strict Recommendation, plus some needed custom markup tags written as HTML comments. For example, here is a note property written in .ncd as a HTML comment that assigns a particular icon to the note:
<!--property:icon_internal=folder-->
Because the .ncd format is a subset of HTML, one advantage is that HTML utilities may be used directly with .ncd files. For example, the KLinkStatus link checker may be used on Linux/Unix platforms to check both internal and external hyperlinks. (Note that KLinkStatus is being ported to Windows by the KDE on Windows Project as part of the KDEWebDev package but is not in a production-ready state as of December, 2009.)
You will also have the best chances of recovering data from an .ncd file in the unlikely event of file corruption because the file can be opened and edited in a plain text editor that supports the UTF-8 character set.
In other words, an ncd file can be opened as a txt file and as an html file.
I also remember Smokey01 saying something about being able to load an
ncd file in a browser simply by changing its extension to html.
So one can still write an article for the PuppyLinus Newsletter, save it in
html, send it to Smokey, and voilà, he can import it in his notecase.
From the user side, the newsletter being published in both ncd and html
formats, it remains accessible. IMO, the solution for the newsletter is:
"everyone moves to the universal html format." This frees users to
choose whatever outliner or PIM they like for their personal use.
My 2¢. BFN.
I built another Devuan Ascii iso at commit 4839. It has the same issues as the one I tried here though and stuff others mentioned like missing icons in Geany, firewall gave a few errors when initilazing, etc. but I can post to this forum from Dillo.
belham2 wrote:Ummmm, ok, this is interesting.....
I'm guessing 64-bit adds about 50MB, same with if the kernel you chose has a lot of firmware. My iso by default was 227MB.
belham2 wrote:Hi Tuuxxx et al,
Ok, here's the problem with .jwmrc I've been mentioning several times now:
1) I just downloaded ttuuxxx's geanyicons.pet fix. (same thing will happen if I download/compile/install anything and/or if I also installing anything from PPM)
2) I install it (or 'whatever')
3) As soon as the install completes, .jwmrc reverts back to the 'build-settings' that has all the icons missing from "Menu" (that I mentioned in the other thread----I assume we all see this with a new build):
For the main 'Categories" in Menu:
--Desktop
--System
--Utility
--Fun
--Exit
For items in the overall Categories, these also are missing:
System----->Task Manager
Utility-------->PBackup and Sync
Utility-------->URXVT Terminal Emulator
File------------>File Manager PCManFM
File------------>Gdmap Graphical Disk Usage
Graphic----->PeasyScale JPEG Resizer
Graphic----->Screeny Capture Windows & Fullscreen
Business--->Xcalc Scientific Calculator
Network----->PcurlFTP file sharing
Internet----->HexChat
Internet----->Ssh-gui secure remote login
Multimedia->Pcdripper CD song ripper
Multimedia->Pmetatagger audio file tag editor
Multimedia->Retrovol sound mixer
4) WHY? Despite me saving a new .jwmrc and having no "old" .jwnrc (remember, the 'jwmrc-previous' already has the corrected info) I can see anywhere in .root, how can this behavior be happening? More importantly, how do I stop it. As it stands, every time this happens, I have to go into .root, open the .jwmrc-previous (there is no .jwmrc original), copy everything (all the corrections I made overcoming the above problems), and then re-copy this back into the ".jwmrc. Then, lastly, I've got to restart the windown manager via the tray, and everything will be re-set to how I changed it.
Anyone?? Even my savefile has my corrected .jwmrc in it. How can Rox be pulling the 'build .jwmrc' when it no longer exists in .root? Could it be located somewhere else???? It's definitely not in the ~/.jwm folder. And there's nothing in the /etc/jwm folder except the needed 'system.jwmrc' file. So, I'm confused..... :?
Running fixmenus from the terminal tells me that jwm-xdgmenu is missing. Pretty sure that is why mine shows up empty :D
Thanks for the patched source. It compiles in Stretch but in Wheezy I found that I had to make one more change. This seems to be gcc version related so may be true for some other Puppies.
(Later:- tweak is needed in Slacko 5.7 as well)
I added #include "stdio.h" to the file /src/lib/IniFile.cpp
otherwise you get an error about "snprintf not declared in this scope"
At the moment, only 1 kernel (3.14.79) is available for dpup-stretch when you do a woof-CE dpup-stretch build. But, that said, see Billtoo's great workaround post in this thread if you want to try another kernel.
The ISO is a bit large, no, wait, let's be honest, it is a 'beached whale' at 341MB :shock: But in my defense this heft is because it includes the latest FirefoxESR (45.7.0). Also, do note that this FirefoxESR has a lot of changes to its "about:config" file (it's been "hardened", as they say, quite a bit) as I always remove security risks along with Mozilla's and Google's ability to track you through their (Mozilla's) "telemetry" and Google's mis-named "Google-Safebrowsing" & 'Google Datareporting" tracking (all these settings have been blanked). Also, other settings like browser.cache, browser.search, device, camera, experiment, formfill https, geo, media.peer & media.eme, prefetch, pocket, security, social, sessions, and tls have been changed to vastly increase browser security. You can easily re-set FirefoxESR back to its original state if you don't like these settings. Additionally, only two add-ons are included, the vlc-browser plug-in (since Oscar's VLC.pet was installed as the media player) and also "ublock origin", about the only add-on I trust.
This Dpup-Stretch, as mentioned above, was built from Woof-CE, something we in this thread are all trouble-shooting and testing, along with enjoying using. It is hoped this ISO will get others to download it, taking a look, testing, and generating more feedback (this is all code for, at this time in early releases, "please don't expect too much and/or support"). :wink:
For this Dpup-Stretch build, other inclusions aside from the standard dpup-woof-CE ones included are:
--redshift
--pupmd5sum.sh (note I modded this to also allow for sha256 & sha512 checks)
--asap3
--firewall_ng
--peasyfirewallmonitor
--glipper
--take a shot
--arandr (I was building and modding this dpup on a dual screen setup, you may have to reset the background image via Menu & 'Nathan Wallpaper Setter'.)
--ttuuxxx's geany icons fix, along with my numerous .desktop menu fixes
--ttuuxxx's Notecase fix
--vlc, via Oscar's wheezy vlc.pet
--oxygen-icon-theme (just testing PPM & installing)
--adwaita-icon-theme (again, only testing PPM)
At the moment, you'll also get a 2nd jwm tray.. The main jwm tray is at the top, the 2nd is the bottom tray. The 1st tray (top) is modded normally by JWM Configuration Manager via the Menu, but the 2nd tray, if you want to mod it, has to be modded directly in /root/.jwrmc (and .jwm) if you want to make changes (just do whatever you want to that file & save the changes in both places, then re-start window manager via the Menu exit).
I set this desktop look & feel up so that the windows (which are open) appear on the top traybar, along with the normal retrovol, firewall, freemapapplet, xload, the date and an exit icon at the very right. No conky, yet, but you can install it easily. At the bottom of the desktop is just a centered jwmtray (the 2nd tray), with the programs I thought would be used most frequently. Also note, I have incorporated both the desktop trash function and the desktop save file function into this 2nd tray. I don't like anything on the desktop (thus why I removed the maddening "Show Desktop" icon/shortcut from all trays). If and when you set up your savefile for the first time, upon shutdown & next boot, the savefile button will appear on the desktop like it normally does for all pups that use a savefile/folder. Since I now have this 'save' shortcut embedded in the 2nd bottom tray, if you want to permanently remove the desktop-boot-generated save icon from ever being generated again (you do not lose any save functionality) on the desktop, just go to '/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit' and put a "#" in front of the lines of everything below the "############MISC Desktop STUFF##############" section (only this section, there are 17 lines total you will put a "#" in front of) and stopping at the #############PERSONAL BOOT SCRIPT############## section. From then on, your pupsave will be embedded in the bottom 2nd tray (any re-mastering will negate these changes & bring back the desktop generated icon/shortcut).
The default woof-CE Dpup-Stretch build includes quite a bit, but if you want something like an email client and/or office document manager, you need to use the included script (for LibreOffice) or install something like Abiword/Sylpheed via the PPM. Or, you could help us out here & give compiling a go with OpenOffice (see Billtoo, I think he's already accomplished this on dpup-stretch). One note about PPM: there is still a bug in its GUI appearance where the PPM interface shows whatever you search/look for as "already being installed". Of course this is not the case. So just ignore that, and continue doing what you want when using PPM. Otherwise, it seems PPM works (one or two internal icons are missing from PPM, though you probably won't even notice it but I just wanted all to know that it does not affect PPM's overall appearance and/or function). Lastly, in Menu, you will find one or two stubborn menu items that just don't want to hold the fixes applied to them. Like, X-soldier in Games/Fun, needs its desktop and menu re-set, and 'gdmap' in 'Filesystem'.
A few noted things the woof-CE includes by default in Dpup-Stretch-700:
--PCManFM
--Rox
--Uextract
--Geany and Leafpad
--and most nearly every other thing you'd expect in a pup (like Tahr or Slacko)
Thank you to anyone reading this far, :) and if you try it, a bigger 'thank you' for downloading. Again, apologies for the ISO size, but I felt a few would like to have a good ole' fashioned browser included (instead of just Dillo) and possibly have a hardened browser at that. Please know this is my newbie-virgin-attempt at building/customizing a pup/ISO, so let me apologize ahead of time if you find something terribly out-of-whack. The only reason I was able to even attempt this was because of all the others (Billtoo, Musher, Oscar, Ttuuxxx, et al) in this thread. Also, I reiterate again, support of this ISO pup is not what it was mainly uploaded for. As mentioned previously, it is/was hoped this ISO, & possibly its DEVX, would be downloaded by some of the murga regulars to help further along the development of dpup-stretch. Thus, into the 'murga-wilds' I humbly release this......while at the same time I prepare to run far, far away before the murga-abuse begins to be catapulted 8)
I installed some must haves with PPM (Kodi,Smplayer,Smtube), and it's
working well.
Congratulations, nice work.
It's using the modesetting driver but that can be changed by exiting to
the prompt and running xorgwizard (I did that on a new automatic
woof-ce build that I did this morning).
As to using the free version of the new notecasePro, as the anonymous
Puppyist suggested, I tried to get the deb archive of it to work, and IMO it
requires too many add'l libraries to be practical in our Puppy context.
...IMO, the solution for the newsletter is:
"everyone moves to the universal html format." This frees users to
choose whatever outliner or PIM they like for their personal use.
My 2¢. BFN.
I'm the "anonymous" person who PM'd musher0 about the free version of Notecase Pro. I appreciate his being cautious about naming me, but actually the only reason I PM'd him instead of posting here is that I was worried about wandering too far OT, given the name of this thread.
At any rate I thought I'd clarify that I use the free version of Notecase Pro exclusively on my LXLE system. This is a mid-weight Lubuntu derivative and apparently already includes dependencies that Puppies lack, as musher0 has pointed out. Sorry about that oversight.
Meanwhile, is it unrealistic to think that the kind of Puppyist who will be contributing to the newsletter will always have at hand somewhere a slightly older Puppy where they can run the old Notecase?
