wps working well on XenialDog32 thus far

#341 Post by mcewanw »

wps/kingsoft-office working great so far installed to XenialDog32.

i386.deb from here:
http://wps-community.org/download.html

To complete the installation, I'm pretty sure I had to:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install xdg-utils
Also needed to install a few extra fonts from here:

https://github.com/so-zengtao/nginx-wps ... _fonts.zip

Using the instructions from here:

https://github.com/IamDH4/ttf-wps-fonts ... /README.md

Cheers,

Hi you all !

I have a Question..... maybe a naive One.

Would it be theoretical possible to make a Xenial-Dog from another Distro .....for Example...... Bodhi Linux ?
Bodhi Linux is a Ubuntu Xenial with Moksha (Enlightenment -E17 ) Desktop .
Beautiful and slick Desktop Enviroment.
(My favorite One )

Bodhi Linux as a Dog Version .....Bodhi Linux goes the Dog ?
This is something i am dreaming about .

As i said ..... i am only dreaming :)

But nevertheless ...it is possible to install E17 via Synaptic or get a e17.squashfs with ApToSfs and put this e17.squashsf into the casper Folder (or live Folder in case of Debian Dog ) .

From being in Jwm_Desktop :
In the hidden Folder .xsession-jwm you have to replace exec jwm with ----exec enlightenment_start----.

Reboot and you should boot into E17 Desktop .

The same works similar for Debian Dog .
It works well for me .

Cheers !

Hi Backi,

If a goofball like me can compile Jeff's (Bodhi) great desktop environment, you can too! Because if it can be compiled, which is true of everything haha, it can be puppified! You can do it!! (just not, I believe, via Synaptic/etc but maybe an sfs (not sure)....Moksha's got to be compiled for that kernel and also take in account puppy's few quirks----for the debian-based pups, they should be able to handle it quite easily)

Hi belham !

Another naive Question .......Compiling ???what`s that ???........something to eat ? :)

But nevertheless......i have installed E17 on both Xenial and Deb Dog (using ApToSfs making the e17.squashfs put it as described above in the casper or live Folder ).

I think there is almost no Difference beetween Moksha and E17 ....except for me ....in Moksha when using different Clock Modules on Desktop ....in Moksha sometimes Clock does not show arms .So i prefer E17.
It last a while to become accustomed to E17 but if you are one can see what a cool, powerful and elegant Desktop E17 is .

Tried different Desktops ......but always come back to E17 Enlightenment because of practical and esthetical Reasons .E17 can be so elegant and very customizable .

Fredx did compile Moksha and also E20 .
E20 is a bit buggie which did the Bodhi Linux Team to cause going back to stable E17 .....here are the links for Moksha and E20 Modules (Down on the side Category Desktop) :

Hi backi,

You tempted me :)

Here's BodhiDog-32bit-TEST.iso Size: 490MB
Not completely sure if it's any good, e.g. ethernet works? wireless works?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/7tk ... t-TEST.iso
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/tr3 ... t-TEST.md5

Just for testing, experimental, never done a "dog" this way, but interesting for me to do such a thing ( before I always worked from scratch (minimal install) and build upon it, now hacked :) from a full install of bodhi linux)
Just a few changes made:
- changed kernel from 4.8 to 4.4 (4.8 doesn't work well with my hardware)
- removed: linux-headers, grub-pc and some more to save some space
- added some (not much) 'dog' applications, e.g. quick-remaster, apt2sfs, sfsload , more can be installed from Xenialdog repository which is activated.
Locale files are still inside, man and doc files are 'zerosized' (files made 0 bytes, to decrease space) (remastering did that)

Maybe, if you like, make your ultra-cool :) enlightenment setup and share new remastered iso with us.

Btw, maybe the better way for a bodhi desktop in XenialDog is to add the bodhi repo to /etc/apt/sources.list and install/work from there, add this line:

Code: Select all

deb [trusted=1] http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi xenial b4main
Have Fun!

Hi fred !

.
Btw, maybe the better way for a bodhi desktop in XenialDog is to add the bodhi repo to /etc/apt/sources.list and install/work from there, add this line:
Code:
deb [trusted=1] http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi xenial b4main
Fine i will do a test ......a bit later .
Some type of telepathy/synchronicity.
This is exactly what i did yesterday .....added-

deb http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi xenial b4main ---
-to the /etc/apt/sources.list
upated and installed via synaptic " bodhi-desktop" (and a module named "places-moksha" for showing Drive Icons as in Jwm or Openbox).
.
You have to replace in (hidden ) File .xsession-jwm and .xsession-openbox ....both exec coomands with appropriate enlightenment_start command .
Save reboot you will probably boot into Moksha Desktop .

It is almost the same as Bodhi Linux ....just slimmer -----plus all those extra Goodies from Xenial Dog without having to install them all .

There are some minor trimming-adjusting nessessary because of Jwm and Openbox....but it is trivial.

I am running a bit out of Time ....will comment further soon.....there are some arguments why to prefer E17 over Moksha .....in my experience.

So it seems better to use Xenial Dog as a base .......install e17 directly via Synaptic or bodhi-desktop via Synaptic ( by adding:
deb http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi xenial b4main to the /etc/apt/sources.list )

Hi fred !

You did the Proof .......it can be done !

Did frugal install your " hacked " " Bodhi Linux " " doggiefied " to an Usb Stick .

Post from it now .

Menu.lst :

# menu.lst produced by grub4dosconfig-v1.7
color white/blue black/cyan white/black cyan/black
timeout 10
default 0
title BODHIXENIAL - porteus-boot - save on EXIT changes=/BODHIXENIAL/changes folder
find --set-root /BODHIXENIAL/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /BODHIXENIAL/casper/vmlinuz from=/BODHIXENIAL noauto changes=EXIT:/BODHIXENIAL/casper/ ramsize=100%
initrd /BODHIXENIAL/casper/initrd1.xz

title BODHIXENIAL- porteus-boot Always Fresh
find --set-root /BODHIXENIAL/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /BODHIXENIAL/casper/vmlinuz from=/BODHIXENIAL nomagic base_only norootcopy
initrd /BODHIXENIAL/casper/initrd1.xz

Wireless worked O.K.
Did set my Timezone with " dpkg-reconfigure tzdata " in Terminal .

Had a bit fiddling to set up my Keyboard Settings ........
After installing German Language Pack ..... I managed to do it . ...
(Went to Menu>Settings>Modules (to click/activate Keyboard......then left click on shelf (left click where the clock is ) Shelf menu>Contents>activate Keyboard (add Gadged ) choosed German.
Not much testing til now .......but seems working O.K so far .

But as mentioned before ,it is much easier to install E17 desktop or Moksha (bodhi-desktop ) to a Xenial or Debian Dog then the other way.
I would suggest to install E17 to Debian or Xenial Dog ( anyway in the Repos )instead of bodhi-desktop .There are some minor advantages E17 over Moksha .

Have not so much time.....will keep your Bodhi Dog to play again with it later .

Thanks for all you have done for the Community ,,,,,,,appreciate your hard and solid work .......blessings man :) :) :)

Thanks backi :)

I've installed bodhi desktop on XenialDog and tried to make it similar e.g. same theme, places-plugin etc, got it working well and found that it runs smoother that way than Bodhi-Linux itself.
A while back we had discussion about E17 and I think there was problem with crashing sometimes, was it because of the E17-filemanager maybe? can't remember.
Btw,what are exactly the minor advantages of E17 over Moksha?

Hi Fred and those that made this Xenial Dog,

I have installed Horus/OpenCV (3d scanning software) using Aptitude and it works perfectly. This is what I call a Ubuntu puppy. I am completely amazed the app installer and aptitude works.

Keep up the great work and congratz on this awesome puppy. I hope this is the sign of things to come, total cross pollination where everything just works.

Hi fred !
Installed your Debian Dog with Trinity Desktop to Usb Stick ......works fine ....as far as i can see....still testing .....

Regarding E17----Moksha--- and so on .....i have to revoke some of my statements
from above .

Just discovered the new E21 Enlightenmentment Desktop.... seems to work far better than E17 or Moksha.......just installed from E21 daily builds ppa to Xenial Dog ...... testing continues ....

Here is how to :
https://www.enlightenment.org/distros/ubuntu-start

Keep on rocking :)

Hi fred!

This is what i did to install E20 (or E21?) :

E21 daily builds PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:enlightenment-git/ppa

To install Enlightenment and Terminology:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install e20 terminology

Installed it to Xenial .

Dont know if the other repository is different .

Maybe try link again :

Hi backi, thanks!

The link didn't open with firefox version 24 but it did with v45 or from Midori.
So time to upgrade firefox (v24 is too old now, but, it's a pity, space taken by v45 is almost twice as much).
seems to work far better than E17 or Moksha
And why or what ? (you're the enlightenment expert, so I'll ask you :) )

Hi fred !
O.K so i try to...
First let me explain what seems good (in my Opinion ) in E17.....
1.Tons of Themes ......
2.Combining of different Elements from different Themes possible (Settings>Themes>Themes Selector>advanced ) .
No longer possible with Moksha or E21 .Quite nice ...but not essentially necessary .

One thing in E17 (Menu>Enlightenment>Restart ) for quick restarting/refreshing Desktop....lacking in Moksha you must use Alt CTRL Backspace instead .....annoying for my Taste .

No Placing of Desktop Application to Folder Desktop (pinning to Desktop the Rox Style ) in Moksha .
Not necessary essential.. Can be done with Ibars or Shelfs docked with Ibars instead .
Conclusion :
I would prefer E17 over Moksha just because of this refresh Desktop Thing .

E21:
Themes from E17 no longer working .
No combining of different Elements from different Themes possible (Settings>Themes>Themes Selector>advanced ) .
Gone but not essentially necessary .Not much Themes to get in the Moment .
E21 seems a bit better structured/polished .....but can not the exactly express what ......needs further testing to find out .
E21 is under Development not longer somehow " compatible " with E17 .
These are just minor differences .....
If someone asked me for advice...better E17 than Moksha ......
E17 or E21 ?....do as you like .... both phantastico if you are willing to explore their Potential .
E17 seems no longer under Development (not quite sure ) .
E21 still continued .

Ok, thanks !

Mmm... difficult choosing, the choice of many themes for E17 (and mixing ability) is appealing to me, but on the other hand ....

Do you feel like working together in the future on a E?? Dog ? mostly under your supervision then :) , I don't mind if it's based on Ubuntu-Xenial or Debian, just to be user friendly, configured nice looking etc...

Again, just future-music, I need to be careful not to put too much on my shoulders, so have to take things easy.

I was thinking about the same ...
Again, just future-music, I need to be careful not to put too much on my shoulders, so have to take things easy.
That`s correct..... one have to be careful not to overstretch .
Feel like a child playing in a Toyshop ......can`t decide which Toy to grab first .....

If .....,but only if.......I think there should be a separate thread ....Debian or Xenial Dogs under the main Topic just for Enlightenment (E17,Moksha,E19-20-21). Let`s keep it first as a loose Idea .Like a Mental Seed .
It`s the " Art to Start " .Don`t exactly know where to start. But there is no need to hurry .
To make it short ......I am interested .
