Hi all,

Good to see development on Dpup Stretch, I remember I liked what Pemasu did earlier, great work on Debian based Puppy.

Please ??? don't fight, work together !!! (that could mean sometimes to put your ego behind bars :) )

Woof CE Debian Stretch and Devuan Ascii Based Development

#142 Post by Billtoo »

I did a new manual frugal install to the hard drive of my Compaq pc.
Radky (I'm testing FbBox-4.1) pm'd me with a fix for the network tray
and all the proper icons appear now.

I have to turn the filewall off or I can't connect to the internet,
Shields UP at grc.com says I'm good so the firewall in my modem is all
that's needed here.

This is the original iso that I uploaded to the Smokey01 server.
I can't upload radky's fix until he okays it but will if he does.

Hi Fred,

good to see you around!

Regarding your comment:
I do hope that at some point we'll come together with a co-operative
plan about this Dpup Stretch-7
-- with each our role and tasks towards the goal of making this Puppy
available to the public
-- with a proper list of problem areas to solve

instead of each of us pulling in separate directions and having to apply
individually on our copy the improvements the other guys have provided.

Well like I mentioned earlier soon I'll have something, lol So will most, I think we'll have a few versions at once, sometimes diversity isn't all that bad :)
What do you use to make the iso image, The scripts I managed in 2.14X doesn't work on new puppies, I don't want to waste a lot of time on it, Just something simple where I can take the edited SFS's etc toss them in a folder and make a bootable iso image.

Hi, ttuuxxx.

In other words, you are saying no to any structured co-operation and
want / force us to go solo with each our own take on the project.

I disagree with your approach. I think we can only run in circles without
some form of organized co-operation on this project. I also think that a lot
of time will be lost redoing and incorporating each other's experiments.
We could cover more ground and offer a product of higer quality if we
were in sync rather than in parallel.

The logical result of this, to me anyway, is of course that this Dpup
Stretch-7 will be representative of one dev only -- with all the glory, if
there is any -- !but it won't represent Puppy Linux as a brand.

But thank you for your honesty.

@belham2

As promised, even if late, please find attached scrots of your build.

As you can see, jwm has a problem with my large screen. Not your fault,
the default template had the same problem with jwm.

Compare these scrots with the ones I provided with wmx as a WM:
wmx doesn't have this problem.

Best regards.

@all:

Given ttuuxxx's refusal above, who's with me to achieve the goal of
developing this Dpup Stretch-7 co-operatively?

Even a tandem will be ok, but given the expected scope of the task it
would be better if there were 3 or 4 of us.

One of these people should be the project leader (coordinator). A good
communicator with organization skills, not necessarily a "dev" per se. If
such a person comes by, I'll pass the hand, I'm not in it for the glory.
And to be frank, I prefer being a "field man" ("homme de terrain").

Let's remember Puppy has popularity positions to regain at DW and in the
Linux world generally. One way to get there is of course the search for
the highest quality.

A reply by PM would be appreciated -- for the time being, for privacy and
confidentiality. If and when we have a team, the project should have its
own thread.

If you have no interest in or no skills for this project, do you think you
could nevertheless spread the word?

Thanks in advance.

In co-operation,
musher0

Hey ttuxxx.

A difference in approach does NOT make enemies. I have my philosophy
and you have yours. That's fine. I hope you won't take it personally and
that we can still talk to each other once this co-op project gets off the
ground!

Rule #1 of co-operation: don't force anyone to join. You opted yourself
out and that's your privilege.

On the subject of quality, I'm not saying your work leaves to be desired.

I'm just saying: I wish to develop this distro in co-operation. I hope to
find team mates and see what happens.

I have been with Puppy eight years, and I've seen too many oversights
because it was strictly individual work. There's LOTS and lots of talent
here, except you cannot be the doer and the critic in the same person,
that's human nature.

We do have a form of unconscious co-operation on this board, but it's
always out of sync. Someone does something, and then a day, a week,
or a month later, somebody else finds an oversight, an error in code, an
ugly design, or a needed improvement.

I believe we can improve that by working another way: as a team,
preferably small, in sync and aware of what each other is doing -- to not
overlap with or worse double what that other person is doing. Aside from
quality, that should also gain us a lot of time (this sentence is a
"Frenchism" but I'm sure you're getting my meaning).

Future may prove me wrong -- or right. But we'll never know if this
solution is any good is no one is calling for structured co-operation.

I happen to be this "caller". :)

Hey its not like I'm going anywhere :)
I'm just saying I'm not wasting my time with woof ce, i'll use it for the base but after that I need to start building an iso and I'm wasting a lot of time where I could be producing something and tweaking it. This week I'll be very busy working basically two full-time jobs, I hope my foot doesn't play up, its never healed right since my accident the cold weather does a number to it, Should of stayed in Australia :), but my Aussie wife wanted to move to Canada and she loves the weather, go figure a Canadian's dream is to live in the tropics and a Aussie's dream is to live in the snow. Typical cat and dog marriage, lol

Since you built evince / epdf, I think we should remove ghostview.desktop
and corresponding files. It's too old and the exec is missing anyway.

Perhaps replace it with a complement in the form of jpdfbookmarks:

I just checked this board this morning, and now I feel like an idiot. if it walks like a duck, talks like I duck, sounds like a duck, then I was a duck last evening

Musher I owe you a big apology.....I was trying to be funny last night, to lighten the mood here (and my frustrations), and thus that is why I wrote what I did. I even used the goofy word "bromance", like they do in politics or movies when they say two friends are fond of each other. I keep forgetting that language and cultural differences exist and this may not translate well....argh, I need to smack my forehead with a brick whenever I think to do this.

Still, thanks for trying, it was just a simple first stab, with a ton of errors are being fixed thanks to ttuuxxx, oscar, you, billtoo, sailor, phil, peebee, micko, fred, mistfire, and many others. Basically I, without shame, rob & steal all of your guys ideas & uploads from this thread and many other threads & projects on murga. Then I try to drop them into this dpup-stretch test ISO build that I did.

Some stuff works, others I can't get to. And whenever there is a .pet, I try to convert it into a .deb file, then include it into the woof-CE build files that I have on the hard drive I use for dpup-stretch woof-CE building.

But I have to say, woof-CE is maddening for me, because I don't understand how to do this properly yet. It is usually luck when I get one of the .deb files seen & built into a new ISO build. I am tempted to just stop using woof-CE altogether (since it already did a basic build) and just keep re-mastering and/or editing the main SFS that the woof-CE process did for the 1st dpup-stretch build & ISO it produced.

I gotta be honest, with woof-CE, more than half the time, I am just stumbling blindly thru their process because woof-CE confuses the heck out of me in why it will see some .debs, but not others, despite the .debs being entered into the pkg-build-list (of .debs) identically in format.

So, yeah, boy, after getitng the 1st base woof-CE dpup-stretch build, sometimes re-mastering and/or just editing the main SFS is a lot more appealing (and understandable) than knowing I am going to struggle giving another go aorund with the woof-CE process. I just wish there was documentation somewhere to tell me how to correctly, after I convert .pets into .deb files, enter these in the correct line format into the pkg-build-list used for dpup-stretch. That's 80-90% of my battle with woof-CE, and a huge time waster because I am too stupid to understand how to do it without some simple documentation for it. :(

P.S. Musher, I was going to PM you back, but I wanted to write this apology here so you know I was sincere when I say: I am truly sorry at my attempt at humor. And i consider you (and all here) a good guy, it just drives me nuts when you guys get to talking about something, and I find myself completely lost, lol, scrambling to go read other threads trying to figure out what you guys are referring to.

LoL I think we might of been compiling the same kernel at the same time, I compiled it also last night, Haven't tried it yet because I was working on issues on the base, I'm figuring I'll get things working well before swapping kernels. :)

@billtoo & ttuuxxx,

Will either of you be releasing that kernel separately where I could (some way) drop it in this dpup-stretch of mine to upgrade from the 3.14.79?

I won't be releasing the one I compiled until I install it and do some testing, better safe than sorry :)
But if bill wants too when he's ready that would be cool. Boy they take a long time to compile.

Wild guess. Pup-volume-monitor has been installed. Ubuntu or Debian glib and pup-volume-monitor does not like each other.
There probably is debian stretch glib package installed with or without self-compiled version from original source glib package. If there is original installed, then the file locations differ from debian version and the debian glib libraries are called first ( or the self-compiled glib is not installed at all ).

First thing: check if the pup-volume-monitor is installed, if yes, then check if the build has debian glib installed. If yes, check if original self-compiled glib is installed, if yes, check why the self compiled version does not write over the debian version. Usually the overwriting has been done with zz prefix in the woof. Package name could be zzglib-version-numbers.pet
