Send PM on forum failed

#1 Post by mistfire »

I was wondering why I cannot send PM on forum?
It only goes to outbox instead of sentbox.

I think it stays in outbox until the other party reads it.
After that it moves in Sent box.

I think you can edit it while it's in Outbox. But not in sent box.
Never paid much attention to it though....

Correct. When you send a PM, the outgoing message is placed in your Outbox until the recipient opens/reads the PM, at which point the message is moved to your Sentbox. (And, as drunkjedi noted, you can edit the PM until the other person reads it/the PM is moved to your Sentbox.)

I'm not sure whether or not this is standard phpbb behavior, but I've seen PMs handled this way on a few phpbb boards, so it's probably at least configurable.

When it is no longer in your outbox. You know the other person has seen and read it.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

There seems to be a bug in the forum software that occasionally prevents this behavior.

I've sent you a PM and the chances are that
- You receive it, but it still remains in my Outbox
- You don't receive it and it remains in my Outbox and can't be deleted
- You receive it and a copy is sent to my Sentbox (that's the way it should be, but I doubt that this will happen)

In any case please report back whether you received my PM or not. Thanks.

There is a PM in my inbox which has been there since July 2015.
I can't open it or delete it. If I try all I get is this error message

And the sender will see this when he tries to delete the message in his Outbox:

Hmm, well, this forum software is geriatric and long out of date. John Murga would be the one to update it, and it might be quite a job to move the contents of this old forum to the new one.

Hmm. Well, I didn't get the notification that a new PM was there... I think. But it was in the Inbox, and clicking on it gives me the "Could not update private message read status for user" error.

Are you able to deliberately and consistently cause this behavior/error?

Obviously. You want another one?

No, not really, I'm cheating. Like OscarTalks I have a sticky and undestructable PM in my Outbox. Though I can't delete it, I can edit it and - here comes the trick - as yesterday's experiment shows I can resend it to a new recipient, causing some confusion at the other end. It's a recyclable bug.

You can edit it? Is there anything in the PM that you think might be causing the problem?

Yes I can edit it like any other unsent message. Content is pure ASCII, nothing special.
