Interim delta 17.03.2T to 17.03.31T downloaded and applied. md5sum of generated iso correct. Thanks for the quick catch on the version number. I downloaded the delta to .2 and was pondering but went off to run the dog and presto...

Update of Grub4Dos frugal install of 17.03.21T went smoothly, glxgears FPS unchanged, sound and WPA2 connection fine. Posting from slimjet version 13.0.7.0 (based on Chromium 55.0.2883.75) rolled into an SFS.

17.03.31T to 17.03.32T update on frugal Grub4Dos install to SSD on the core 2 duo laptop uneventful. All checksums ok. Continuing to use as my daily alongside X-slacko Slim. Still wrangling with the toolbar fonts on slimjet. No matter what I do with the font setup on the LXDE derivs, the XFCE pups all give slightly bolder better defined fonts there. Just a personal nit, all else is great.

Updated 32T to 33T on the core 2 duo and 31T to 33T on the Pentium M laptop (using the 4.4.52 kernel). Probably before your re-upload. Both went perfectly, sound, video, suspend, save perfect. I continue to use slimjet, OscarTalks 13.08.0 SFS now, and have figured out my font niggle. It's not XFCE vs LXDE but a fontconfig thng.

I installed and set up LxPupXenial-17.03.00 and the slimjet toolbar fonts were fine! Rooted around and swapped fonts in LxPupSC, no change (I'd done lots of that previously). Swapped /etc/fonts for the LxPupXenial one and the toolbar fonts improve to what they are in the X-pups and LxPupXenial-17.03.00. Lots of repeated swapping, X-restarts, reboots and squinting. It's real and reproducible. This is with the stock fonts, theme, and /~/.gtkrc-2.0 etc. Finally set up named stock and Xenial /etc/fonts dirs so I could just move the contents in and out of /etc/fonts and open slimjet. No X-restart required, it follows that configuration.

Now I think the LxPupSc-slimjet combo will pass muster on the farm BayTrail box and I can get slimboat off of it!

Cheers,

Up and running LxPupSc-17.04.1T on both core 2 duo laptops after a brief 'shot myself in the foot' spell with a leftover high compression fdrv or bad zdrv from a test iso :? Both pristine boot and updates from 17.03.33T boot and run well, and my slimjet toolbar fonts pass my squinty eye test as well. glxgears FPS at 1780+ is extremely good for these laptops. I'll give the Pentium Ms and BayTrails a go later today. So far, great.

Edit: Installed Grub4Dos frugal on both the Pentium M laptop (using the 4.4.52 kernel) and on the BayTrail desktop. Both boot and run just fine and have the expected glxgears FPS for the respective hardware. Set up the BayTrail box as a samba shares and print server with scan capability for the old USB connected Epson CX_5400 with no hitches.

Thanks for the patience peebee,

PulseAudio??

#669 Post by peebee »

Mozilla is moving all it's products to require pulseaudio.

Latest Firefox-52 has had it as a dependency for some time....

Now Thunderbird is also moving that way (though why sound is a requirement for an email system is a bit beyond me!)

Slackware have also moved to include pulseaudio as a basic system component...

So I'm wondering if I should include apulse (the alsa pulseaudio imitator) in the LxPupSc build? I probably will unless I'm alerted to a downside.

If anybody has any thoughts let me know.

[LATER] Just had a look at Thunderbird-52 downloaded from Mozilla and interestingly(!?) it doesn't need pulseaudio/apulse to run - but does need GTK3.....

[EVEN LATER]the Slackware version is GTK2 friendly however it was necessary to delete some files from the TBird profile to get links in emails to work
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1354007#c9
Deleting all "places.sqlite*" files did solve the problem.....

Yes the Slackware Firefox 52esr is compiled with --enable-alsa and gtk2, or at least 52.0.2esr was:

Why is anyone still using Thunderbird?! It's the first thing I remove from new installations having Firefox. Sypheed looks and feels much the same without the bloat & trappings, but CLAWS is the one serious users of email choose. Notwithstanding, Puppy users may have the option of an Eudora .pet conversion in some incarnations, probably the best emailer ever devised, even though it was US-only terminology.

pmcputemp

#672 Post by Rodney Byne »

Hi peebee,

Following my 17.01.26 & now new 17.04.1,
same unresolved issue;
pmcputemp installed from PPM only shows core temperature
in system tray when initialised in terminal, but disappears again
when terminal is closed.
Shouldn't it work dynamically to "stick" after re-boot?
Regards.

Hi RB

That pet does not seem to install itself into either /root/Startup or /root/.config/autostart ..... which does seem strange!

What you need to do is open /root/Startup in a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/bin/pmcputemp pmcputemp
and then restart the window manager....

PB,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Sorry I've made a mess of this, I have less than
zero coding knowledge as being just a pensioner.

I had to hand-type your command into URXVT
because its copy/paste facility is inoperative
using my scroll-wheel mouse.
None of the mouse buttons or wheel do this.

When I did type it correctly, I think it said it failed
to create a symbolic link the second time around
as I'd already created it.

Anyway the upshot is pmcputemp still doesn't
work, as the little green box should appear
immediately in the sys tray on bootup.

The other thing is I didn't know how to restart
the window manager as command not known,
so simply re-booted.
How is this done?

Could you please investigate & test much more
deeply this problem.

Hi RB

There is no "problem"....

The pet is made by 01micko and is not constructed to meet your expectations...

Don't use urxvt - use LXTerminal....

Restart WM is a button on the Session Control menu....

Attached is a modified .pet which should meet your expectations ;-)

PB,

The .pet runs, but when the green box appears, the laptop
fan speeds up and then the green box turns red.
The laptop top plate gets unnaturally hotter.

So I have decided to stand down on this issue
and have uninstalled the .pet to status quo.
The pc fan now just ticks over normally.

My original expectation was led by BK's earlier
xenial xerus 7.0.1 which temp indicator works normally.

One thing I have noticed when trying out distros, if the OS
has two alternative window managers, such that the
unselected WM & vice-versa still runs in the background,
the fan screams fast enough to threaten tearing out its bearings.

This situation is totally unacceptable as the dual-core processors
are obviously heat-overloaded.
Cheers.

Hi RB

My laptop does not exhibit that behaviour.....

There is no other window manager running in LxPup - use the Task Manager - you will see no sign of jwm running.....

There is a new version of libbluray been added to Slackware which I would like to switch to but have no way of testing.

Can anybody check if bluray discs play in mplayer when the attached ydrv sfs (false .gz) is installed please?

Hi @peebee does your lxpup kernel supports "forcepae" option? If yes how to use this option on grub or syslinux?
