I thought the first one I tried was an early ttuuxxx but it had the permissions issue so I grabbed your one. Have you never done a 3.14.79 Stretch? I can't see anything 3.14.79 in ttuuxxx's repo, only 4.1.38

Hello Billtoo trying your 3-14-79 build and so far it is working well on my Emachines E625 where as the later kernel builds give irregular boot to black screen problems. Will report back.

Yes a good question - this problem has been driving me nuts.

Ok symptom as mentioned boots to a black screen randomly.

Pups which I have tried which give this behavior:

Tahrpup, Debian Stretch all versions - even Billtoo's with the 3.14.79 kernel.

Pups that don't seem to exhibit this behavior


Slacko 5.7 (8Gee's version) and 5.6 slacko - the latest I seem to be able to run.

Currently running Lucid 5.11 without incident and have also run Fluppy 013, Lucid 5.25 and Slacko 5.31 and Wary 5.1.4.1.

This Dpup Stretch has GPicView as the image viewer which seems OK.
If you prefer Viewnior here is 1.6 which I compiled.

Firefox hasn't updated so I downloaded Firefox ESR 45.9.0 from the web.
The smaller screen is closer to me so it's good for watching video.

All things considered, the Puppy Stretch has a rather reasonable RAM usage.
Please see the illustration here.

If I remove from the list opera, soffice and python, biggies not used by all
people, I get a RAM usage of 93,68 Mb's.

I compiled the latest AbiWord 3.0.2 in Stretch
The build completes and the thing runs, but I noticed that the blinking cursor on the page does not display correctly and the letters are slow to appear when you type them in. Something is not right with it.

I went back to version 2.9.4 which I have been using for some time in Slacko 5.7 and that compiles OK in Stretch using the same method but this one has a cursor that displays normally and the typing goes in smoothly. I think I might put this version into my Stretch remaster for now and investigate the 3.0.2 version later. I think ttuuxxx said that there was something about it that he was not happy with.

Wireless always picked up, minor video adjustment for my own preferences,
but working.

Compared to some recent Puppy builds this is refreshing.

Some minor annoyances, one was the word program on the desktop
defaults to to come up with Google.

Anyway mate keep up the good work, at your leisure.

As I said before, you don't need to be a masochist and to go through the
aggravation of trying to compile Abiword-3.0.2 for only 2 sub-sub-version
numbers.

Use Médor's sfs for Abiword-3.0_gtk2. It is rock solid, is multi-lingual, has
been compilied for GTK2 and has a full complement of (80) plug-ins.

Still experimenting a bit with AbiWord and looks like 3.0.1 may be OK.
Builds successfully for GTK2 in Stretch and flashing cursor and typing look normal.

Since they have moved it to being mainly a GTK3 program, perhaps the GTK2 code has got neglected and a bug has crept in between 3.0.1 and 3.0.2

The Medor thread is in French. Do we know why he never went from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1 ?
Looks like 01micko has a 3.0.1 build (or two) in his Slacko repos

Regarding the plugins, many of them look like they are for pretty obscure functions. In a .sfs package it doesn't matter, but for including in my remaster I have just selected the ones I want during the build (half a dozen or so).

I can't answer for Médor. Ask him? I know he understands English, but I'm
not sure if he can write in English. I'll translate if necessary.

I remember him saying that it's abiword policy to publish odd-numbered
versions for testing, while even-numbered versions are actual releases.

Also I know that the man has been quite busy developing and maintaining
Slaxen, a French-language Slacko.

About abiword plug-ins for obscure formats, I think we should include
them anyway. We don't know when the user will need them to convert
an old document.

I believe we should respect the integrity of the package. If the author of
abiword designed 80 plug-ins (or whatever number) for it, then we should
present the package will all plug-ins. IMO, the strength of abiword lies in
its plug-ins.

As a word-processor, it is so-so, but it can bring back to life many
formats, including the swx and older OpenOffice formats that OO itself
now refuses to recognize. Allowing the user to access his/her older
documents is more than a convenience, IMO. It may save him or her
hours of research on the Internet to find a converter AND the anxiety of
not being able to read or print a needed document.

Another plus for me is that with its PDF plug-in abiword can read and save
the text of a PDF document directly and without fuss.
