Running Windows program, Vcarve

#1 Post by Pine hill »

I would like to use Vcarve Pro in Puppy, I've looked on the Wine site, it doesn't list it, but it's not a popular program, it's a CAD/CAM used to create CNC projects.
Are there other programs that will run Windows only programs in Puppy?

Thanks for any help

Only way to know if it can run in Wine is to install Wine.

For Wine.

Make sure you have the latest version of Wine.
Good place to get Wine for Puppy.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88711

Also, look on the first post of the Wine topic for a added program that puts Wine entries in the menu.

When you get Wine installed and the Wine menu entries.
Run Wine config to setup Wine.
It will probably offer you a few more programs needed for Wine to run properly.
Should download and install them as part of the initial config.

Also, in Wine config->Drivers Select autodetect to get all the driver locations loaded in Wine.

A lot of settup options in Wine config, so check them all.

What version of Windows you want Wine to mimic can affect how a program runs. Wine Config->Applications.

About specific programs running in Wine.
Go to the Wine web site and see what it says about a specific program and issues.
http://www.winehq.org

Using Wine is almost like learning a new operating system.
Takes a while to learn how to use Wine and to get things working properly.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I recommend that you follow ndujoe1 advice to take a look at crossover for two reasons. The first because it suggests that Vcarve Pro will run under crossover, which is a commercial fork of Wine. That, itself, is encouraging that it may run under wine. The second is that you'll find on the referenced webpage a link to crossover's manual installation guide.

Scanning that guide, I was reminded of how playonlinux functions. You might want to try kost@s' PlayOnLinux-4.2.10.pet, available here, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 132#881132, but read the entire thread (2 pages) on which it is located regarding pre-requisites. I had forgotten that one requirement was to download the version of wine you wanted. As bigpup suggested, you should generally use the latest available version --'though occasionally a newer version my include some change unintentionally adversely effecting some application which ran better under an older version. And because Wine 2 is a substantial modification, I'd try out 1.8 or 1.9 first. Kost@s provides a link to his 1.8; while version2013 provided pets up to 1.9.24, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 240#934240 before publishing versions of wine 2. This is not to suggest that you should try Wine 2s, only that time alone will tell whether they will be as reliable as Wine thru 1.9. [First get it running, then see if something else will be advantageous]. Perhaps the best course, if possible, would be to use the version of wine most like the version of crossover under with vcarve ran.

Worst case scenario: Puppies can run several brands of "virtualware". There are individual threads on this section of the Additional Software Subforum: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=61.
