Hi Icake

Pls STOP it is nonsense if you don't publish and extend an index! This topic is not usuable for normal user!!! Pls go to the Puppy Wiki and enter your stuff in it and create the links and the index needing to work with it without toil Rolling Eyes ,,,

This forum is not a collection of knowledge (that is the job from a wiki) but a place to discuss...

PostPosted: Sat 18 Mar 2017, 16:38    Post subject: Adding Chinese to Puppy: Difficult to Follow Instructions

I am an experience Ubuntu 16.04 user, trying Puppy on an old Dell.

Finding the right Puppy version was easy: I downloaded the iso for Puppy Precise 5.7.1 x486, burned to DVD. It runs well on the old Dell desktop.

Now for Chinese. This post is easy to find, which is good.

The problems I have are:
-It looks like files are stored on Google Drive. Puppy comes with Opera and Google drive will not allow Opera to see the files. It says I need to use another browser. Ok, so using Puppy Package Manager I downloaded Firefox, only Google Drive still will not allow me to see the files. It says I need to upgrade Firefox. I therefore am blind
-I think I found the right files in a post authored by icake on Tue 21 Feb 2017, pp28, but where do I download the actual file? I think I need:
* fcitx_4.2.0-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet
* scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet

Neither of these files are found on the PPM, in any repository. I am stuck.

-It looks like I need another computer to download Chinese packages, then transfer them to my Puppy computer, in order to install the packages?

Universal Half-Chinese Pets 萬用半中文包: https://goo.gl/kdfkFG
http://pan.baidu.com/s/1pJjrVGR

-fcitx_4.2.0-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet nor scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet is not found in the Google Drive directory
-fcitx_4.2.0-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet was not found on Baidu
-scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet found on baidu

-Also, Do not use URLs or file names in Chinese. I cannot read it because I have not downloaded Chinese yet! If I could read Chinese I would have already accomplished how to download the proper packages.
-storing files on Baidu: I cannot render Chinese yet, but Baidu is all Chinese. All I get are rectangular boxes!

Lots of work has been done and it looks like these files are available, somewhere, but written instructions are not understandable. Do not use tools or web sites that a new Puppy install cannot see.

So here I sit, in Opera, on a new Puppy Precise 5.7.1, and cannot download Chinese. Please try to make your instructions helpful and usable. Try to write instructions from a new Puppy install viewpoint.

Today I downloaded Puppy Linux Precise 5.7.1 onto a 10 year old Dell P4 celeron 2.66mhz with 750mb ram, and wish to explain, in simple terms, how to install Chinese input. You will need another computer that has Chinese and a USB drive. I installed the SCIM version and not the FCITX version. I installed the half Chinese version (only Chinese input and display), and not the full version (Chinese OS).

This is the file you need:

Quote:
scim Chinese input platform:
scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet (21.6 mb)

icake has stored it on Baidu. You will need a Chinese computer (not your newly installed Puppy) to browse and then download the .pet (extra install module) to the USB drive. Don't bother with the Google docs, as the file is not there.

From now on everything is all on Puppy. Go back to your Puppy computer, stick the USB drive in, find the file and click to install, wait until it is installed. It will tell you that you will need to restart x server.

Menu > Setup > SCIM Input Method Setup > IMEngine >Global Setup make whatever changes to your Chinese input types as you want. I did not want traditional Chinese, for example. Save with Ok. It will tell you to restart SCIM.

How to restart X server and then restart SCIM
Restart X server
Code:
<ctrl><alt><backspace>
startx

In terminal, or in Puppy look for the white monitor on the top of the screen called "console",
Restart SCIM:
Code:
sudo pkill -9 scim
scim -d

The scim Chinese is only enabled where you might need Chinese, such as an editor. Start up Leafpad or Geany and hit <ctrl><space bar>. You should see the SCIM horizontal bar pop up. Type in some pinyin and you should see Chinese characters appear. Hit the space bar to select. Toggle off Chinese with another <ctrl><space bar> when you are finished. I have launched Opera to Youtube, searched for Chinese movies, found them and watched a bit. Puppy did keep up. Impressive, especially on such an old computer. I thank icake for his Chinese file and his time.

Subject description: missing files in Google sharing drive

TorontoBoy,

Thanks for raising the issue:
Quote:
Don't bother with the Google docs, as the file is not there.

I checked my download link to the Google drive for the Universal Half-Chinese Pets 萬用半中文包: https://goo.gl/kdfkFG

Results:
1. When I used the default file sorting order (sorted by file names), then the file: scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet (21.6 mb) is not there

2. When I resorted the files inside the folder using colunm 3 "Last Modification Date", then the file scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet (21.6 mb) is available.

(resort file method: move the cursor to the heading "Last Modification Date" and mouse left click on the little triangle to the right of "Last Modification Date")

Initially I thought there was an error with my Google files, so I uploaded all of my Chinese pets (over 1,200 files) to the Google cloud drive. Unfortunately, the file scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet is still missing under the default sort by filename method. And again, the same file is available if you resort the files by Last Modification Date.

If anyone knows why, please let me know.
