Frisbee doesn't see my wireless network -Lucid 5.2.8 -SOLVED

#1 Post by wimpy »

I have an old AMD Athlon (Barton core) which has both a wired Netgear card and a USB 802.11n wireless adaptor. It multiboots windows XP, Lubuntu 16.04 and a few puppies, which include Lucid 5.2.8. All my home PCs connect to the outside world via a router which supports both wireless and wired connections. Windows XP and Lubuntu had no problem in finding the wireless network and I could access the web with the cable disconnected. Lucid 5.2.8 was a different story. I followed the instructions and installed Frisbee. This cannot see the wireless network at all - the wireless setup is completely greyed out. I was hoping to get rid of the cable. Is there a better wireless network manager or is there some fix for Frisbee? I should be grateful for any help or suggestions.

I followed the instructions and installed Frisbee. "

It was already there in that Lucid variant.

Did you mean that you just enabled it?

You might change your wireless channel in the router.

Did the other network tool see your wireless adaptor at all??

Answered my own question....obviously not.

Post your exact laptop model....always helpful,
and supply your wireless adaptor specs as well.

You should know that by now.

rerwin and rcrsn51 might even help you out here.

In fact here is a post by rcrsn51 to start you off.

@cthisbear and rcrsn51
It's not a laptop. It's one of my old PCs. It uses an Asrock motherboard and has a 500GB SATA HD and 2MB RAM. The TX/RX is a mini USB dongle, marketed as a B-Link, somewhat similar to the transmitter of the MS wireless mouse.
PPM shows the following additions, which I did following
the advice from the Wiki.:
wpa_supplicant-0.5.9-i486.4X
dhpcd-5.2.9-Puppy5
Frisbee-beta-2-lucid5.2
Did I not need to add those if Frisbee was already there? Can I uninstall them?
Since the device works fine in Lubuntu I presume it's functioning OK.
I ran the diagnostics from that thread and got nothing
iwconfig gave
lo no wireless extension
eth0 no wireless
ifconfig wlan0 up
ifconfig:SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device
iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
ifconfig wlan0
Error fetching interface information. Device not found..

I turned off the firewall but that made no difference .

It's going to take more information than that.

Run the command "lsusb" and identify the vendor:product ID codes for the adapter.

Thanks for the replies.
@cthisbear. Yes! that is exactly the one I'm using on this PC. Sorry for being such hard work :).
@rcrsn51 . That command does not produce any identification - just Bus, Device and ID numbers, the last in Hex - xxxx:xxxx.

As an update the Win XP is now having problems which I haven't sorted yet - it connects OK saying the signal is excellent but after a few seconds it cuts off with "No or limited connectivity". It seems to have difficulty acquiring a network address. Lubuntu,on the same PC, however, is still going strong with no problems. I would add that the home network which consists of PCs running Win 10 and Win 7 along with tablets, iphones and other mobiles from time to time, seems to be OK . I'm writing this on a Win7 which uses a similar 802.11n USB wireless dongle. I shall try rebooting the router and see if that helps.

the last in Hex - xxxx:xxxx.
Unfortunately, I cannot identify a device with those codes.

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:7601
This adapter uses the Mediatek MT7601U chipset.

The original vendor-supplied Linux drivers for this device were garbage. There is now an excellent open-source driver but you need a 4.x kernel Puppy to use it.

I suspect that you are out of luck with Lucid.

My thanks to everyone. I've just downloaded the Lxpup Xenial 16.08 iso, so I'll give that a try. Should I mark this as solved?

Just a thought.

For Lupu maybe the ndiswrapper could work if you can find a 32-bit winxp driver for that dongle.

Some info and walk-thru screen caps for using ndiswrapper.

There is more information about the mt7601u driver here if the device is not auto-detected.

@perdido I tried the ndiswrapper method and it does detect the "card" as wlan0.. Ndiswrapper insisted on the unloading of the wired driver for eth0. It acquired an address from the router (it says) but I don't know how to join our network which requires a wpa2 password.

I have never needed ndiswrapper to connect so I'm guessing starting from here.
After acquiring an address maybe use Frisbee to connect and supply a password?

@cthisbear I tried that but it made no difference. From my reading and the symptoms it's likely to be a winsock corruption. There are fixes and I may try them but Windows XP is dead in the water. The PC is approx 60cm from the router, the signal strength is excellent and Lubuntu 16.08 on the PC connects and runs wirelessly. There are some laptops, iphones and mobiles around the house running Win 7 and 10 and other OSes - all connect wirelessly fine on this channel.
@perdido I need to do more reading on ndiswrapper but as rcsnr51 has said it might be better to try a 4.x Kernel puppy. So far, on this old PC. only Lubuntu16.08 has matched the ease of connection of the Windows (7 and 10), Apple and Android OSes

@rcrsn51 Thank you for the link to those mt7601u pets. I did a frugal install of Lxxenial16.08 and used the appropriate pet. Network Manager recognised the "card" and I am now on a wireless connection to the Internet using the router. I am most grateful for your help - it was spot on!
My thanks to everyone who helped. I'll mark this as "Solved"

Excellent. For the benefit of other readers, which PET did you install?
