BCM4312 not working for me: it does not surf even though frisbee successfully connects. Network-wizard fails dhcp. Simple Network Setup connects but I cannot surf the internet. Resolv.conf seems ok.

Frugal installed latest 32-bit with PAE (kernel 4.4) and also 64-bit (did both kernel 3.16 and kernel 4.9). Thanks Micko for the hard work, I really can't find anything wrong except Palemoon. I seriously don't know what happened to Palemoon, as I used to use it all the time, but it is just having all sorts of problems. The damn thing will wink-off (shut-off) on certain news sites, or in the middle of a Youtube video, it just shuts-down. I've gotten so fed up with it I've removed all traces of it completely (from all Pups), swallowed hard and installed a blink-engine browser (Opera) in both 32-bit and 64-bit slackos (and everything else), and have had no problems since. Palemoon (the latest "New Moon' version--both in Pups and/or downloaded straight from the Palemoon's website) has something wring with it to be failing so much. Or, I guess, maybe it just doesn't like my systems...but if that's true, why did it run like a champ for the past 5-6 years on these systems?? So, other than Pale-New-Moon, everything else in rc3 is hunky-dory

Also wanted to say I still LUV the big, honking in-your-face icons we can set for the Slacko desktop. For a person whose eyes are starting to play tricks on him in later life, it is much appreciated.

Furthermore, I like the little things---like the new icon for downloaded ISOs. It looks great, Micko! It's the small touches like this that make the puppy universe so wonderful.

Thanks again!

Note: if you report a wireless problem I need logs!
Slacko 6.9.9.9 32bit K4.4.70

This is using an internal wifi adapter on the motherboard.

With no save there is no problem.
Seems to work OK.

Frugal booted with save.
Speed low and cuts off and on.

Here is log info when using the save, however this is the same when not using save.
So probably tells you nothing.

I will reboot using the save and recheck this modinfo.
No change, same info.

I can try a different kernel, but if it works OK with no save, would changing kernel do anything about the save?

WIFI issue.

Using a new save on a new installation of Slacko 6.9.9.9 32bit K4.4.70

Anything in the save that would have something to do with the browser?

I think I will see what happens using a different browser other than Pale (new) Moon.

I guess Chrome will be different enough to not use same files.
Now, find a version of Chrome that will work in this Slacko 6.9.9.9

6.9.9.9 32-bit non-PAE on beat-up Dell Latitude D600.

In reading logs recall that this machine does not have a working hard disk interface.

This is running from a USB flash drive with a save file and using Palemoon/Newmoon. I did experience problems while getting this data, but the tablet beside the laptop did not experience WiFi dropouts.

There is a great deal of redundant or irrelevant information in these logs. I've gzipped them so you can sort the wheat from the chaff.

I have tried to measure my wifi connection, but it is so unstable that I can't get the same result twice. This is not because of Puppy.

bigpup .. don't bother using an old chrome... full of security holes. For 32 bit use Vivaldi or Opera. take a look in the Setup menu, Setup >> Download Chrome, Vivaldi or Opera.. In 32 bit only Vivaldi and Opera are offered but they are based on Chromium (blink rendering engine - same as Chrome). There is a choice to make a pet or SFS and install it. I prefer SFS which makes it more portable. I'm quite liking Vivaldi but try whatever you want.
bigpup wrote:I can try a different kernel, but if it works OK with no save, would changing kernel do anything about the save?
Absolutely. Saving session depends on Puppy's main thing - AUFS - which is absolutely kernel dependent.

Thanks for the logs. I'll sort through them when my brain is less chaff!

When I want to try a webkit/blink browser I usually try SlimJet. It is the only one that doesn't make me angry.

I haven't tried it for a while but when I do it's the slacko-14.0 one by OscarTalks

edit: Oh just my luck... looks like his "14.0.14.0" builds (the version out right now) don't work in Slacko 6.9.9.9

Still having trouble reproducing those network problems. Strong feeling that something involving multiple processes and networking is taking place, and not just with WiFi.

I'm seeing different kinds of messages from SNS which I thought I understood in other contexts. (Some problem also shows up with Frisbee or Dougal's networking wizard, but most of the time I use SNS due to familiarity.) When it says simply "Please wait..." I usually think of that as a general networking operation which might involve eth0, not WiFi. When it says "Please wait, attempting to connect to 'yournet' " I believe it is really dealing with WiFi. I'm at a loss to understand why I continue to see the first category of message after the first successful connection using a profile. Sometimes I find that deleting the profile, and going back to the more general setup of the interface then works. This is true even though the frequency and password for WiFi has not changed, and I can use WiFi on another device nearby. I'm also regularly seeing messages flash up and disappear before I can read them.

There could be a problem with the hardware in that laptop, but I don't believe it is as bad with other OSes. Need to run more experiments.

Added: though it is something of a miracle after the recent house cleaning, I have found a USB flash drive configured years ago specifically for that ancient laptop, and running Puppy 4.3.1. This boots up and connects without a problem. All it needed was the latest WiFi password.

Still later: eventually ran into a problem with Pupppy 4.3.1 and tried to set up networking again. Found I don't remember how to use Pwireless2. Scan never showed network. Back to slacko 6.9.9.9, now it doesn't see network. Wild idea: try to set up eth0, knowing this will fail. When I go back to seting up wlan0, it now sees wireless networks again.

This technique resembles a gambler's lucky socks.

Wifif issue.

Tried several different browsers.
That seems to have no affect!

Tried Slacko 6.9.9.9 32bit K3.16.43

Initial boot up no save.
Wifi connection did get setup, however it cuts off and on.
So, it is a problem from the start.

Xenialpup 7.0.8.1 32bit is using kernel 4.9.13
No wifi problems in it.

 I will test Slacko 6.9.9.9 with k4.9.13 and see what happens.

I will report!

Wifi issue is present in some Linux distro's as well. It's resolved by disabling IPV6. Hope it's not the case here.

Correction:
spoke too soon.
See following post.

Frugal install using save file.

Wifi issue success!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Slacko 6.9.9.9 32bit using firefox browser.

Changed the kernel to 4,9,13

Wifi seems to be working with no problems :!: :!: :D :D :D

I used:

huge-4.9.13-xenial_ noPAE.tar.bz2

From here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/huge_kernels/

Note:
This kernel does require me to use boot option nouveau.modeset=0 to boot to desktop.
I can live with this.
Seems to be required by my graphics hardware in the newer Linux kernels.
Well, until I change to a Nvidia driver.

Slacko 6.9.9.9 32bit FF k3.16 version.
Slimjet browser now starts and runs.
I removed the libudev.so.1 from the /lib slimjet sub-directory as it seems to be causing a conflict and is not needed. This library is present in the system. See here:-

Oscar's finding of dueling shared object libraries causing nondeterministic behavior with slimjet sounds right, but in the system with palemoon/newmoon I can't find a copy /lib with libudev.so.1, while the primary libudev.so.1 is a symbolic link to libudev.so.1.6.3.

NOTICE

NOT FIXED

Slacko 6.9.9.9 32bit

Wifi issue.

I spoke too soon.

Changing to the 4.9.13 kernel did not fix the problem.

It seemed to work after 2 reboots, but on the 3rd reboot, Wifi is back to very slow and cuts off and on.

What I have tried:
Different browsers.
Different kernels.
With and without save.
Seems to be affected most by using a save.
With wpa connection, without wpa, no difference.
Rebooted using Xenialpup 7.0.8.1 and wifi works no problems. So, indicates to me it is not bad hardware.
Posted requested log info, but it does not seem to show anything useful. Same info when it works and when it does not.

Have not tested with Slacko 64 bit, because I wanted to keep using 32bit drivers I know work in other Puppies.

Any ideas??

Now posting from tahrpup 32 non PAE 6.0.5 on the same D600 laptop. Kernel is 3.14.58. Its WiFi is not great, but, so far, it seems consistent and usable.

(Aside: my order of flash drives came in, allowing me to run more experiments with different systems set up for this one machine.)

I am suspicious of a problem with udev like Oscar reported. This might explain why having a file on a save device is relevant.

wifi problems

#180 Post by Jooee »

With a fresh install of Slacko 64 bit, 4.4.70, rc3, using sns to connect,
I don't seem to have any problems. (only 1 hour test)

But I had problems with wifi disconnecting and reconnecting a while back,
but after using peasywifi to connect, I had no problems.
